Apple graphics partner gets Intel cash

Tim

iRadio

Just kinda wondering if Apple make a DAB radio yet, what with those being a significant source of revenue for Imagination Technology. Another Imag'Tech development I read of a while back is a satnav combined with 3d imaging, so basically you can see a picture of where you are & where you should turn next. I think it was meant to be due out in Japan first.

Oh, before anybody gets too excited about this & over-investing in this genuinely interesting firm, it might be worth checking their profit figures.

Lenovo preps dual-display Frankenlaptop

Tim

2 things...

Mr Spang, I entirely agree that a "mid-air" digitiser would be dreadful to use, however the article says the digitiser is "built into the right side of the palm rest." Presumaly, this means that as well as 2 screens the laptop has a separatedigitiser. I've only ever used a digitiser & screen combined, not sure if this idea will help or hinder. Personally, it would have been better if the smaller screen slid out from the keyboard & had the digitiser incorporated in it.

Dominic... get with it man, inches are the new centimetres.

Merry Xmas

Three simultaneously cut undersea cables under repair

Tim

@ AC 08:57

We wouldn't gain less spam, almost all of it comes from the US anyway (or did until someone pulled the plug on the ISP last month).

Oh, if anyone's into undersea stuff, I recommend a book called Blind Man's Buff, tis a good read.

Has anyone seen a mention of whether Skype is going to be blocked there too? I am aware its encryption & general difficulty to snoop makes it unpopular with Govts. Especially that type of Govt.

Does anyone know what batteries it is running? 200Kw for up to 10 minutes seems rather a lot, and by my excellent mathematics (cough) requires 192 average-sized car batteries. Heavy stuff...

Very true indeed, I follow them closely on TMS & in the press but don't have Sky, & wouldn't even have been able to name Vodafone as their sponsor.

Oh, not more $20 matches either. Such a shame.

Virgin Media opens bandwidth choke for 50Mb launch

Tim

It's better than nothing

At least Virgin are trying to develop the broadband product, admittedly to those lucky ones (unlike me) who have cable, whereas what are BT doing... their product development seems to have entirely stopped in 2002 when ADSL Max came along.

If I ask nicely, could you do a similar comparison of portable DAB radios- i.e. the little ones that run headphones? Would save me the effort of figuring out which ones are rechargeable etc.

Bumper MS patch batch spells client-side misery

Tim

@Yarr

Thanks- no I'd never heard of that site before. Looks promising as it uses it's own client to carry out the updates, will give it a try. Thanks again

Tim

Risk analysis... @ Love the

Yes, how critical are these really & how big is teh risk? I have a home PC (not the one I'm posting from) which the MS Updater would cause to hang. This was an issue specific to my mobo (& several others) and MS issued a patch for it 18 months ago, however the patch did not work for me. The effect of this is that the PC has not had a single MS update applied for approaching 3 years. No problems whatsoever so far either. My only alternative is to replace the mobo (or move away from MS); what's the cost-benefit case of this likely to be anyway?

OK, so it does run up to date AV and a firewall, & regular Adawaring, and most web browsing is using Opera, and no POP email is run on, plus I'm generally careful. No online banking either.

I somehow doubt I'm the worst offender out there either...

There's gold in green: profiting from climate change

Tim

@ Obama

The British public don't protest. And if they do the British media doesn't publish that it happened. Sorry, but no solution to this one. Until there's a revolution.

Oh, you can't even adopt a "if you can't beat them then join them" approach, as individuals are not allowed to trade in carbon credits.

I'm rather surprised by this, afaik passive RFID chips can only be read reliably from a few cm, ou have to use active (i.e. battery powered) at the ranges the article mentions. Anyone got any info on the technology they are using?

BT threatens to pull plug on better broadband

Tim

A disgrace

BT are an utter disgrace. A so-called technology company which can only provide the same ADSL service as it has offered for around 7 or 8 years (longer in some parts of the country) while the rest of the world, and those in the UK on cable, are getting far better value and speeds.

Tim#3

US spec-ops get robot whispercopter kill fleet this month

Tim

Price?

Any idea how much these are? Strip out the military stuff & it's be just the job, like having your own private pilot; hop on board, key the destination into the GPS & lay back for a snooze. Got to be better than travelling Ryanair anyway.

Tim#3

Visa trials PIN payment card to fight online fraud

Tim

@ Steve

I can't help wondering if, with this new card design, they will move the fraud liability onto the cardholder instead. They could even argue that it is fairer, as the new system is "fraud-proof" so any problem "must" be caused by the cardholder not taking sufficient care.

To mitigate the negative PR aspects of this, they could even start to offer a fraud protection insurance, albeit for a small fee...

US Navy SEAL uniforms: Now with built-in tourniquets

Tim

@ radian

So, what is' for lunch today. Lobster and Foie Gras to make up for yesterday?

Tim

@Radian

A bottle of water? I greatly enjoyed the glass of Anglian tap, which accompanied my ham & tomato sandwiches, homemade steak pie, and 2 pieces of lemon sponge, very nicely indeed. You may find that tap water is better suited to the taste of the biscuity part of the twix too. I'll consider that further as I have my mid-afternoon Kentish Russett; is it me or are they unusually big this year? .

land of the free-aks part II

Tim

HP offers gov half-price printers

Tim

Recycling etc

Bearing in mind our govt's self-proclaimed green credentials, can it be confirmed that these printers will both have their cartridges recycled and will run on recycled cartridges?

A few months ago, HP would not have anything to do with recycled cartridges at all, even though at least 1 firm (Danwood) does it.

BT seals free Digital Vault

Tim

Sounds like blackmail to me

Surely they should offer to return your files to you for free instead.

Anyway, why bother with this? Instead, just set up a gmail/yahoo mail account and send yourself (or to be precise just draft and save) an attachment of anything you which to keep a copy of. You can even share things (e.g. pics) with trusted friends or family by telling them the password to it. So long as the file is under 10mb it works fine.

For backing up anything bigger just get a cheap memory stick.

Old ships' logs show temporary global warming in 1730s

Tim

Further records reveal...

A search of the Treasury's archives indicate that 18th century global warming was recgnised and stopped in it's tracks by an enhanced fiscal policy . It was widely recognised that the problem could be dealt with not by researching new technologies or by encouraging people to behave in an environmental manner, but by simply taxing the population heavily on those essential items it cannot do without.

Tim

@ kissing

He does have a good point, when I've been in the US it's been really noticeable how low crime is in most areas, and it is confined to just places nobody would visit. For instance, I was really surprised to see in San Francisco that people would leave convertible cars parked on the side of the road overnight with the roof down, this wasn't in a particularly wealthy or poor area. Also, on a biking trip over there I was really amazed how whenever we stopped at a diner etc the US riders would leave their helmets on the bikes - something you never see done in the UK, and nobody else even owned a big chain or shackle lock (I have 3...). Camping gear was always left untouched (unlike Latitude last weekend-80 thefts on 1st day alone!), we never saw any indication of crime. That said, you can of course go into the wrong part of town there & things aren't so safe, it just seems they manage to isolate those parts better & leave the rest of the country crime-free, whereas in the UK the crime is spread out thinly everywhere.

Google's Street View spycar clocked in London

Tim

Legality?

There's 2 pertinent angles to this, firstly privacy: they are welcome to retain a copy of my image, should they take it, provided they pay the annual fee as outlined in my terms & conditions. They should also contact me for permission beforehand, so I can be sure to be wearing my Sunday best.

Secondly, I can't help wondering how this vehicle fits in with the recent police, er, crackdowns on people taking photos in public places. Indeed, what if it is driven by a swarthy, bearded, backpack wearing gentleman, or his Brazilian lookalike?

What about 22/5 ?

I hope he can take time to look into the 22/5 incident, when Al Queda brought terror to the heart of Exeter. Could that have been a joint MI6-CIA plot authorised at the highest level? I demand an inquiry. Pregferably one that takes several years and costs many millions but doesn't really decide anything.
