UK reforms on private copying and parody come into force

Dazed and Confused

Re: UK Music has claimed that the reforms will cost musicians £58 million a year in lost revenues

Some people have never heard of the idea that having a better product might lead to better sales.

In the 15 years before I started ripping CDs to play them through MP3 type players I might have averaged 1 or 2 CD purchase a year. Most years since then I've probably been closer to 100 since I suddenly had a format which meant it was sufficiently convenient to use the product. I don't mind paying for my music (and spoken word CDs), I don't see why musicians shouldn't be paid for the work they do. But I'll only buy something that I'm going to use. Make it usable and I'm in the market, stop it being usable or make me feel like I'm being ripped off and my money will stay in my pocket.

Re: Most people realise

My point was that why would someone design a mobile that is designed not to be able to be carried in the way that you know most people are going to carry it. It's a question of whether the design is fit for purpose. I've no idea how the size compares with an SGS4 but that works fine in the front pocket of any trousers I've tried, but I'd not not try sticking it in a back pocket and sitting down. Lesson learned from Nokia bricks... sit on them and you end up with bruised buttocks.

Re: Most people realise

> Most people realise if you have a super thin and light phone and you sit on it - it's going to bend. I would not jump up and down on the bonnet of my car.

You might not jump up and down on the bonnet of your car, but you'd be pretty pissed off if it bent due to wind resistance when driven at 70MPH on the motorway. You'd feel that driving at 70 was normal use for a car and that to be fit for purpose a car should be designed to handle the stresses of normal motorway driving.

Most product designers would realise that if they design a mobile device that people are going to carry it around with them. So question, where do people carry things around ?

Now HP's VUE is where MS got 3d effect windows from, HP & MS had agreed on making various things common in appearances and many of the keyboard shortcuts. These then became available in Windows 3. So its taken them a long time to implement the rest... like 25 or more years.

Hey I run a Scalix server at home, which used to be OpenMail, so the whole internal addressing scheme is X.400. But I don't have to fight the rest of the damn thing and can largely ignore all the X.400 addressing stuff which was always bloody stupid and unfit for purpose.

Dazed and Confused

Re: What essentially saved TCP/IP?

Was that it worked and it was good enough for what people wanted it for, whereas OSI gave infinite interoperability problems.

Then came the PC, you could run TCP/IP in a system with 640K of base memory and still just about leave room for an app. This wasn't the case for OSI.

Also I'm bloody glad I've not needed to wage war against X.400 in the last 16+ years.

Lots of vehicles had those, not just Chrysler. Incidentally all cars with knock off wheels have spinners going in the opposite direction to wheel so the trundling effect tightens then rather than coursing the wheel to drop in the first 50feet.

Re: They need to release 250GB or 500GB discs for 8K and 4K...

I rather felt that HDTV became accepted as a standard because it became available at about the time when flat screen TVs became affordable. The move to flatscreens was a significant benefit to a lot of people, it save tones of space in the living room and made bigger teles practical. Digital and HD just happened to be happening at the same time and got a free ride on it's coat tails.

BTW, Sony's version of HDTV was 1920x1200 not the spec we ended up with which is lousy 1080p. Sure looked good in 1990 when they lent me their demo system for a show stand. Doesn't that make it pre-date the original PS?

Americans have guns, but are legally forbidden from having nipples. Americans have guns in case they ever discover anyone who posesses a pair of nipples (therefore must be a witch)

If we import American moral standards we'll all need to surrender our nipples in return for being allowed to carry guns, but all right thinking people know that it is better to show people shooting other people than to show any evidence that people are mamals and that therefore Dawin might have had a point.

I remember back in the 70's reading a review in something like Autocar or Motor where they pitched the new Honda CBX inline 6 cylinder bike against the an Aston Martin Vantage, the bike was miles ahead at the first corner, just ahead at the end of lap 1 and then disappeared after that and no one ever accused the Vantage of being particularly good at corners. A Bugatti Veyron might beat one of these to the first corner, but after that it wouldn't see which way this thing went.

How the hell

Did any of these things get patented?

Least cost routing? Sorry that's been around since Bell first invented the damn phone. Certainly the companies I worked for back in the 80s all used least cost routing in their automatic exchanges, so these all significantly pre-date those patents.

Hands free? oh you mean speaker phones. How long have they been around for? decades?

Even on mobiles, car phones had this option back when handhelds were little more than a car phone and car battery.

Will someone please do something about patent offices issuing patents when there is so much prior art around.

Perhaps we should introduce a new rule that any company that applies for a patent when there is published prior art automatically has every single one of their patents invalidated.

Preferably the patent office that issues one when there is prior art should have every patent they issued within a year also invalidated. This way businesses would bring pressure to bare on the patent offices to do their job properly rather than simply allowing anyone to patent anything and passing it on to the courts to clear up the resulting mess

want, Want, WANT

Where do you get these types of displays?

I use a 27" 2560x1440 at the moment, 22" would be a bit small, I'd need to have it closer so would need reading glasses. 40" is probably too large, I'd need to have the screen a lot further away. The 32" inch display on the kids PC (ok HD TV) seems fine.

Dazed and Confused

4K screen prices are already dropping

I got an email this weekend with an offer on a 40" Samsung 4K screen for under a grand, puts it in the same ball park as a 30" 2560x1600 screen. Perhaps still a little high but now at a point where I might be tempted. 40" is perhaps a little large to have on the desk.

Re: Dell's offerings are better, I think

Sorry but looking at Dell's website all their 17" laptops are equally useless, They do either 1600x900 (FFS) or 1920x1080 screens. Please tell me I'm wrong, please show show me a model I can buy which will do the job I need to do. My HP 8740w hangs far too regularly for my liking (2 or 3 times this month). I don't want to cough up for a new one, but have little choice.

I need a 17" screen (I'm over 50 so eyes not what they used to be), 1920x1200 (or better) screen. I'd like to be able to use it outside occasionally. The HP dream colour screen is bright, I was using it in a sunny Portuguese garden yesterday afternoon OK. It needs to do drive encryption and it needs to use SSDs OK (my 8740w has been messing up since I switched on drive encryption when running an SSD, SSD with no encryption was stable. My 8370w messed up big time with encryption and an SSD but is rock solid with encryption and spinning rust).

I'd like to be able to plug in upgrades, RAM and disk as time goes by.

Is this too much to ask?

Re: WTF...

No, I work on remote systems which require me to run windows inside windows inside windows and I can't control the size of windows there are on the inside, so I have to make sure my screen can cope. Thirty years or so ago a 1024x768 screen became the normal for a Unix workstation, by 25 years ago the world had moved on to 1280x1024 being the norm. So many programs expect to have that kind of real estate to play with and some programmers go to the trouble of turning off a users right to resize things. So I'm left with realistically needing close to 1200 lines on the screen to cope with these things running inside windows on remote systems by the time you've added all the decorative s*&t wrapped around windows.

The boxes spend 90% of their time sitting on a desktop and connected to a 2560x1440 screen (2560x1600 displays are still "sillier" money) but I do need to be able to haul it around with me, I'm away from home right now and still need a decent screen but can't bring the external monitor with me.

Dazed and Confused

ARGH!

Still a crap screen

It's a mobile(ish) workstation. I'm not going to watch BluRays on it, I'm going to use it to work on.

1920x1080 is not good enough, I've tried and I can't live with it. What I do for a living needs at least 1920x1200 so I'll have to stick with my EliteBook 8740w, which I had to buy 2nd hand because the 8760w had a crap Mickey Mouse screen too.

I'd much rather have the 17" model than the 15"er but I'd like some dots on my screen please.

Make a decent screen res model and I'll buy one immediately, but this one you can keep.
