Brexit-fearing Vodafone: Of course we’ll make money from 4G

Dazed and Confused

Increase in traffic != increase in revenue

The difficulty the operators face isn't in getting customers to use more bandwidth, it is with persuading us to cough up any more dosh for it.

My kids will use any number of Gigs of data they're allowed. Youtube has a lot to answer for :-)

Fortunately 3 offer an all you can eat data option at a reasonable price. So guess who's getting the business. Before that the boys were both on T-mobile which had a parent friendly capped usage. I'd much rather not let the kids have unlimited data, but I'm scared of bill shock.

So I have no intention of paying more. The network that can supply with what I need for the best price is going to get the business. Will they use more? YES, will I pay for it? NO

Ericsson to Apple: Cough up for licences or stop selling iPhones, iPads and Watches

Dazed and Confused

Re: Pricing transparency

> I think a patented technology is only included in a (3GPP) standard if the patent owner agrees to FRAND licensing. Given the potential amount of money that you can raise due to the sheer volumes involved then I believe most companies will want to license FRAND; it's a cash cow.

Just blindly say "FRAND" is what I think will go away, they'll want legally binding definitions as part of the standard. Since the standard is probably written by the current players I guess it will be in their interest to set these values high enough to keep out the new comers who aren't contributing to the patent pool.

Dazed and Confused

Pricing transparency

I think the whole idea of FRAND was born when all the phone companies were holding part of the jigsaw, when it came to the patent pool.

Then along came Apple who didn't hold any useful telecoms or radio patents and gate crashed the party. To make matters worse Apple started to get tough about non technical patents, such as round corners (before the usual culprit says that's a design patent, I know but don't see why the hell you think that makes the slightest difference to the argument), bouncing menu or whether the third pixel on the 2nd row is allowed to be blue on Tuesdays.

I can't see any of the companies agreeing to FRAND their patents in future.

Re: or is Apple denying that the patents apply?

No Apple is asserting that Ericsson are holding it wrong. You're only suppose to hold patents in the direction that benefits Apple. Surely everyone knows that.

Google versus the EU: Sigh. You can't exploit a contestable monopoly

Dazed and Confused

Re: So....

True, but when the average punter goes and buys a PC then it comes with IE installed and nothing else and IE is pre-programmed to use Bing. So you could argue that Bing has a monopoly position. But somehow the average punter manages to change things so that they choose to use Google.

MS have spent gigabucks in advertise Bing, but the average punter is still refusing to use it.

Google don't have a monopoly, Google have a product that people are choosing to use.

The idea of, well at least 1 idea of, having an OS is that bugs in something as externally attackable as a web server can't bring down the whole system.

But what she is saying is in direct contradiction of of the policy implemented by her predecessors. When I complain that Amazon France or Germany wouldn't see me things that were in stock in France or German but not in stock in the UK, whereas car companies have been fined millions for refusing cross border sales I was told that the commission didn't feel there was anything wrong with Amazon helping to create an artificial shortage in the UK for marketing reason. Go figure.

Fortunately other companies in German where more than happy to help me out and sell me what they had in stock.

So, please put your own house in order before giving the public a hard time for this.

Hence the proposal to put it inside otherwise wasted space such in the unused bytes of the typical 64byte ping packet.

BTW rejecting requests that contain correctly formatted information is a violation of RFCs. If nothing else it violates the rule that you should be precise with what you send and generous with what you receive. Which is why the Internet more or less works most of the time rather than some of the more formally proposed networks like X.400 where so many implementations effectively sent garbage and rejected everyone else's garbage.

Re: No mention of the fact driving with a hand-free mobe isn't really safer

> One of the problems frequently mentioned is that the passengers in the car with you are aware when something occurs that demands the driver's attention and stop talking.

Sorry but this bollocks is dragged out all the time by people who claim that talking to people in the car is safe and talking to people on a hands free is tantamount to premeditated murder. It shows a total lack of knowledge of passengers in the real world.

These people have clearly never had children or at least have never driven with kids in a car.

Lots of passengers, even ones who hold a drivers license take no notice of the road ahead and don't stop talking when the driver needs to concentrate.

Passengers often say things like "Ooo look at that" or point things out on the map/newspaper/mag..., directing the drivers eyes away from the road. People on the other end of a phone like rarely ask you to look at things, well apart from "have you read the email I just sent you..."

Lots of people find it hard to realise that while it is polite to look at someone you are talking to under normal circumstances it isn't a great idea when driving.

Sorry, but that line is total bollocks from people who quite rightly want the use of phones in cars banned but realise that banning drivers from talking to passengers isn't going to work.

While you're at it you may as well ban the radio, lots of people find it impossible to listen to the radio without shouting at the presenter and indulging in hand gestures at the same time.

Re: single market? my AR*E

There is a single market for people who can afford lobbyist, it doesn't apply to us.

A few years back Nintendo had decided that the number 1 marketing tool in the UK was to create a scarcity. Every Christmas it's the same, some toy manufacture hypes up their wares and then tells the press that there won't be enough to go around. Suddenly all the kids want one. So UK has no Wii consoles (well apart from the warehouses full but we mustn't talk about those). So hop on the the Amazon site for France, not problems with getting a Wii but as soon as you put in a UK shipping address - NO Can't deliver to that address. Try Germany same story. Try giving an address in France to the German website, no problems, UK address NINE!

So I put in a complaint to the EU commission and was told that they felt that Nintendo were allowed to do this if they wanted, even though I'd pointed out that car makers had been fined €Ms for doing the same type of thing.
