This shouldn't be able to work.

You shouldn't be able to edit or replace sudoers unless you're root and edit the file with the correct user.

It works because the newgrp command is effectively root, that is the only way it can work.

The dynamic loader shouldn't be honouring such environment variables for SUID or SGID programs. It's a trivial test to make. If the programmer is not aware of things like that they should not be editing something as universally used as the dynamic loader.

Years ago I was running a training class for some of the guys from CERN and it seemed their favourite answer to a question was "I don't know, but I can think of a way we could investigate that" questions are far more fun than answers, it's the learning which is the enjoyable part. Once you know the answer you need to move on and find some more fun questions.

Don't blame either the Germans of the Greeks, blame the loonies than lumped them in the same box. They just have different views on how money works. It isn't the case that one is necessarily good and the other bad, they are just different. Like whether you speak German or Greek.

Germany for fairly obvious reasons has a morbid fear of inflation. I won't call it paranoia given their history their fear is fully justified.

Many of the southern European cultures don't see inflation as such a bad thing.

In many ways inflation is a good thing for the younger generation and a bad thing for the older one. When I got my foot on the housing ladder back in the 80s you expected to spend every last penny you could lay your hands on to be able to climb onto the ladder. But you were confident that a couple of years down the line inflation would mean that the mortgage you were paying had become tolerable and a couple of years later OK. Anyone with saving however was in trouble because the value of those saving was being wiped out. OK that was alleviated to some extent by the ability to earn some interest.

Now we've put all the widely diverging cultures into one economic box. Those who'd always assumed they could just print more cash suddenly find they can't. Inflation isn't going to wipe out their debts and they've gone through a period where suddenly debt had looked easy, they could get as much as they wanted at what looked like absurdly low interest rates, but now instead of the loan amount having been whittled down to size they suddenly find that it needs to be repaid in full.

If you don't like the horrendous noise PCs make then might I suggest a Hush. Please sit down before looking at the price though. Beautifully built silent PCs (OK, with my ear pressed to mine I could here the head of the hard disk moving, I guess they make them with SSDs now do avoid that issue).

The problem with this approach is :

a) The long lead time, this doesn't gel with a want it now society

b and most importantly) the side (or waste) product of the manufacturing process.

This waste product normally consumes all available production, damages the production equipment and consumes all other resources you thought you had.

The compiler? Dennis Richie demonstrated decades ago how to propagate viruses through the compiler by making the compiler recognise when it is recompiling itself and then inserting the virus. You can then remove this hack from the compiler source code and it will continue to propagate through every subsequent version of the compiler built by itself or it's descendants.

How do you trust the CPU? or any of the other HW.

Remember it isn't paranoia if the world is out to get you.

So if you ran a business and a Chinese court ordered something about your company to be de-listed globally would you be happy to accept that? Or perhaps some hard line XYZ country that believes what you say is morally reprehensible according to their deeply held doctrine, do you believe they should be able to have you de-listed?

I bet you don't.

If the French court doesn't want their citizens to see this data they should force French ISPs to block access to google.com, then see how long they remain having that legal facility.

I'm not so sure about the Welsh hillsides, I don't know them quite as well, But if you take sheep farming off the Lakeland hills you will totally destroy the environment we all love so much. It ain't natural. They look like because of the sheep. Oh the hills would still be there, but the flora would change for ever. It was for this reason that the Cumbrian hill sheep were saved from the foot and mouth cull.

Well given the Euro courts attitude to Google and the right to be forgotten they'll probably rule that PB by telling people where to find the information are breaking the law, but that the site actually hosting the illegal content are not infringing anything.

But on the other hand, since they think Google is the Internet, they'll probably just fine Google instead.

Like there is no option in the GUI to just have a plain background. These people have clearly never remotely managed a system. The color options all have a subtle and stupidly large noise bitmap. Plain colour background might be dull dull dull'sville but they go at a sensible speed.
