Pragmatic Decisions

There is code I wrote that has been working apparently correctly for years, but looking at it now I'm frankly horrified by it. Were modifications now needed and I was to work on this again, to do the job 'properly' would require a major re-write. However, if I apply patches with extreme caution, and very very thoroughly test everything, it is likely to carry on working - apparently correctly - for many more years.

I haven't (yet) had to make such a decision.

I never have and never will. Unfortunately I have family that do, so I'm certain there is a lot of data about me that's been stored.

A solution

Switch off 'puter, do lots of fiddling around then exclaim "Oh, they've got the Foo plug in the Bar socket". Swap two innocuous USB plugs, then "It'll take a while for the negativity to drain away, but within a day or two you should notice the improvement".

I use it extensively for local backups, and surely if you're using it over the Internet (I never would) it's the transport protocol that's the risk.

Mu cousin's school used to do an annual G&S production (to an incredibly high standard), and I was allowed to attend a performance each year free - Mum had to pay. I got sucked in rather, and learned most of the plot lines and songs. However, as my school was somewhat less {cough} refined {cough} the instinct for self preservation kicked in and I never shared this with my school mates.

Accessibility

That's the thing that makes me think.

Take Google out of the frame, and if anyone wanted to find out about the guy they'd have to go digging - and make the value judgement as to whether it was worth the effort.

With Google there, you just type in the name and apparently the conviction is the first thing that comes up. No effort needed, and no judgement either.

A difficult decision for that judge - glad it's not me.

Very unpleasant people

The original abuse is despicable.

Getting the images is sick.

Now that's the straightforward bit.

People hunting for the images to try and help the victims is sort of laudable, but I wouldn't want to be tainted with seeing them.

People doing that purely for financial gain. That's a big NO in my book. They are directly profiting from the victims.
