Bad things come in threes: Apache reveals another Log4J bug

An ancient memory

This layer upon layer problem reminds me of when I was a kid, and dad was redecorating a room in our Victorian semi. There were multiple layers of wallpaper, some of which had also been varnished or painted, so dad decided to strip the lot off. This took the entire family days to achieve, and when completed revealed a strange crack in the plaster. Yours truly started poking around, and a large lump came away. Rather than getting a mouthful of abuse, noticed dad had gone very pale and silent - all the layers of crap had hidden rampant dry rot!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. As a child I was taught all of these measurements, but the only actual numbers I remembered were 8 furlongs to the mile and 1760 yards to the mile.

P.S. I believe there was also one for fractions of an inch but can't remember it. I've a vague feeling it was 4 (somethings)

Re: A comment from the REAL Will

Yes a rather woolly description I agree. The person operating the bell had to reliably be informed if it had failed to actually sound. Bear in mind this was for a bunch of 16 year olds in the mid 1960s. Eventually someone (not me) was bright enough to ask if the bell not being set a signal counted as the bell not working!

Re: Failsafe?

One that a friend of mine has, will return to its starting point if it loses signal - first horizontally, then vertically. It also monitors it's distance and battery, and if it's too close to the envelope, again it will return to base.

If it were a cheap drone I'd say he was lying, but these model planes are not cheap and are given lots of love and attention by their owners, so in this case, I'm inclined to believe him. Also, dodgy goings on in lorry parks is not exactly unknown.

.. but sorry for those just entering the job market.

I've had good jobs and bad jobs (mostly good) but in every case all my contacts with manglement were direct with real people. In one particular case very many years ago I was in a situation where I simply didn't fit in. I was able to go and talk to the boss, and after a short discussion, I resigned rather than try and bluff it out. In those days you could get meaningful references, and the one I got from him was brilliant.

All of this has gone, or is rapidly disappearing from the most mundane to the highly skilled placements. Artificial (lack of) Intelligence is accelerating the process dangerously.
