Opera chief: Microsoft's IE 8 ‘undermines’ web standards

Mike
Thumb Down

Opera is the problem

> The fundamental problem is Microsoft's decision to allow users to continue to view billions of old pages optimized for non-compliant IE 6 and 7 that would otherwise be scrambled in IE 8.

If 'allowing' users to continue to view the content they want is a problem for Opera, screw the Opera.

They have come a long road along this 'standards' fashism, but this is way overboard.

This is not a threading issue

To Tim Brown, RotaCyclic and others - reading the Howard's post, this is not a threading issue.

It is reentrancy bug - the external code called inside the loop (probably one of the TransferFromSource() calls) can update the array, invalidating the local variable.

It is reentrancy on the same thread, not multithreading - so no semaphores (or OS/2 knowledge :)) would help here.

RE RE WTF!

To Ian: a dumb phone that makes phone calls and sends text is great. And there are already plenty of cheap dumb phones that make calls and send text, requiring less resources and running faster/longer.

But Android is not a dumb phone - it is smartphone and thus costs more, it is larger, less reliable, has more complex UI, and drains batteries faster than any of these dumb phones. If all you need a phone that 'makes calls and sends text' - Android is one of the worst phones for you.

Of course Android can do much more - like do GMail, maps, 3rd party apps, etc. So it is not so bad at all. But it provides too much of functionality for people like Ian and too little for people like Dick. Well, it is probably still useful for some folks. But I agree with Dick - until it gets PC syncing, Exchange support, a headphone jack, and stereo Bluetooth, it is junk to *me*.

To Farai

Android will not make your crappy HTC S710 blazingly fast.

S710 comes with 210MHz CPU and 64MB of RAM.

G1 comes with 528MHz GPU and 192 MB of RAM.

G1 has about three times more powerful hardware, no wonder it is reasonably fast. But on S710 Android would be painfully slow - most likely worse than WM, which was initially designed for such low end hardware. Most new WM phone still have lesser hardware than G1 and run fast.

Apple slashes iPhone prices

Interesting economic ideas

Where do you get your original ideas on economics?

In the market economy if an adult willingly spends $600, he thinks that the iPhone is worth it. He was not tortured or forced to spend these money. The buyer thinks he will get the maximum benefit by spending these $600 on iPhone, he goes to Apple store, the transaction completed, done.

The fact that two months later the same stuff sells for less does not invalidate it or make him "robbed" - repeat, he thought that iPhone was worth his $600 at that time, nothing changed.

It appears to me American are more concerned about "getting real value" that getting good stuff they want for the money they think it worth. Kind of similar to "keeping up with Jones". If you think iPhone is worth your $600, go get it, and don't regret if it is sold for less later. If not - wait for Apple to drop price (it had to happen, if not sooner than later) or keep using the crappy Razr.
