See a young Brit's mobe? 55% chance it has nekkid selfies on it, claims poll

Mike Wharton

I think this is a social problem, people are so insecure about their own appearance in comparison to others they constantly try to obtain the 'perfect pose'.

Keeping such an image on their phone probably serves as some sort of confidence boost.

I have noticed when in the pub or even just a few drinks seems a justifiably suitable occasion that the girls just want to constantly photograph themselves pouting.

Super annoying.

Shouldn't your graph say 'billions' instead of 'millions'?

Apple 7in iPad not out until Q3 2012

Perfect for retina segmentation

I can see the smaller screen keeping the now rather lacklustre 1024x768 res and the 10in model getting a beautiful 2048x1536 retina panel.

Apple needs new ways to differentiate, and a super hi-res panel is one clear shot way to do it.

Dev's iPhone cable melts after iOS 5 upgrade

iOS5

I actually noticed this on my 3GS the other day when charging - it was a lot hotter than normal. However I think this has improved slightly with iOS5 beta 2 which I'm now currently running.

Wait a minute...

"not one has had the wit the figure out that users might also want a more shallowly angled screen"

No, it's just nobody else thinks that such a - frankly obvious - design necessity deserves a patent.

We've had screens that tilt for some years now...

Patent madness.

Ten grand - the cost of iPhone-induced sobriety

Thats about right

It costs about 10k to build a professional iPhone app, you would be slaggin the NHS off if they had a crew of students in tinkering with XCode.

Also, they are not the first government organisation to spend this kind of money on iPhone apps, its actually quite low as far as previous governmental apps go.

I was at Glenfiddich the owther week

The tour guide told us they'd already sold a few bottles and she let us sniff inside the casks they came from.

I've also tasted some really old Macallan but I was only 17 at the time so would probably have preferred it mixed with Lilt.

VM And Their Caps

I have 20MB VM, it is OK, but I dont always get much more than 10. I just consider the extra money I pay over 10mb as paying for the bigger cap amount. I just think its daft that the caps kick in so early, whats the point in 20MB if you get capped after using it for just 20 minutes???

Doesnt make sense.

Er, No.

Sorry John Oates,

I don't judge our governing bodies by their ability to use Twitter. I'm sure Obama's facebook is literally oozing with style and charisma but fortunately our leader is more interested in actually trying to run the country. Discussions of the success of this attempt aside - asking him to resign purely because he doesn't moonwalk onto stage Steve Jobs style while simultaneously blogging on his wordpress is simply daft.

Start-up Bee pledges 'affordable' British e-car

Mike Wharton

HiPa drive???

"The BRM Bee Four ERV will use four in-wheel electric motors developed at Oxford University to generate 520kW (700bhp) and will have a top speed of 250mph."

Almost undoubtedly the HiPa drive system from PML/Electric Motor Works...

Electric car seller hits brakes as UK EV sales plunge

Mike Wharton

PML Flightlink mini

The PML Flightlink mini is indeed capable of silly speed, can be made to recharge VERY quickly (matter of minutes) and is incredibly efficient at re-generative breaking. This is for a number of reasons...Partly because the motors act as the brakes and are hub mounted they are very efficient at turning kinetic energy into electrical energy and also because the batteries it used (i think) are nano li-ion rather than the more standard li-ion used in the Tesla and the crappy nickel metal hydride used in the prius (really old-hat technology now).

The better batteries can charge much more quickly and therefore can store the huge influx of energy from the breaking system.

The reason this car hasn't caught on is cost. The only other car with an equal setup is the British Electric Lightning and its rumoured to cost £120 - 180k.

The problem is cost, not technology.

Saw it in person. Laughed.

I saw this at GDC 2008. Its absolutely useless, offers no benefit whatsoever and I was completely unimpressed.

Total fad with lots of the usual gaming paraphernalia marketing buzzwords.

HD DVD sales still solid despite format's failure

Mike Wharton

Adoption Rate

The reason the HD generation has a much slower adoption rate than DVD is because people need HD TV's as well as the expensive HD equipment to make it worthwhile. Add to that the expense od HD capable audio systems its no wonder people are sceptical. Also the difference in quailty of DVD vs HD is no where near as essential to enjoyment as VHS vs DVD.

iPhone = 'cool' tax

I grudge that after paying for an iPhone you then are locked to one operator on a shitty tarrif. Then Apple slaps a tenner a month onto the tarrif just to be 'cool' enough to have an iPhone.

Shite.

Im insulted. I hope Jobs realises we are not stupid, we are not slave's to his designers and we will not pay silly money for it.

Radiohead top UK album chart

Mike Wharton

what???

My views:

1. Millions of people bought the CD because they saw the CD and bought it. If they had an ipod they would have gont to Itunes.

2. Yes CD is better quality but millions of people can't tell the difference. Probably a good 80-90% i wreckon.

also

"Bottom line, sell good sounds on 12", 45's for preference, and I'll pay good money for them. I'll rip it to DAT on the first play though, they wear out eventually :)"

You rip it to DAT? isn't that 48k 16 bit? as opposed to 44.1k 16 bit? what the hell is the point? yes I am sure can, as can I, tell the difference between CD and vinyl but I doubt you can tell the difference between CD and DAT.

Errr...no I dont think thats correct

Where did greenpeace get those "standby" power usage estimates. Everywhere else on the web I see people measuring the PS3's standby power usage at less than a few Watts...

http://www.dxgaming.com/?p=6&page=2

True, it uses a hell of a lot of power when running, but the Wii uses around 15W on standby because it auto downloads updates so I wreckon over the course of a year the Wii probably uses more power.

Downright Lie

"Members paid donations via debit or credit cards, ensuring their continued access to the site."

This is verging from twisting the truth to downright lie. Donations continued the running of the site by paying for the hosting, by now means where users required to donate to continue using the site.

Actually OiNK was one of the few private sites where you COULDNT buy ratio. All you got for donating was a little star next to your name and a few invites.

I would hardly describe the Wii as 'next gen' sure it a successive iteration of Nintendo hardware, but next gen has become too much of a buzzword for latest technology.
