The internet is going to hell and its creators want your help fixing it

IGnatius T Foobar !

Re: I thought they were going to talk about the Internet?

"de-platforming" can include domain registrars, payment processors, and having your career and/or life ruined. So what difference does it make if the pipes still work, if you can no longer make use of what's in the pipes? Technical problems have technical solutions, but these three digerati were not there to talk tech. The "Orwellianization" of the Internet by a few privileged elites is the single biggest problem facing the online world today, bar none.

IGnatius T Foobar !

I thought they were going to talk about the Internet?

When I read the headline I thought they were going to talk about the Internet. You'd think a bunch of Internet pioneers would talk about the Internet. But instead the article goes on for several screens about social and political issues.

How about this one, guys? "The Internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it" [John Gilmore, 1993]. Remember that? How's that going these days, when Facebook/Twitter/Google are more than happy to censor or "de-platform" anyone who dares to post wrongthink?

The Internet is under attack by a small group of elite who are working hard to monopolize it. THAT is the biggest issue we face right now.

It's official. Microsoft pushes Google over the Edge, shifts browser to Chromium engine

Doesn't Windows still have an FTP client?

Remember the old days when you used an FTP client to download Netscape? That's all we really need to download Firefox. They don't have to build an entire browser just to download another browser.

What now, Larry? AWS boss insists Amazon will have dumped Oracle database by end of 2019

IGnatius T Foobar !

Amazon is too big

Amazon is the new Microsoft. Eating up market share and destroying everyone who is not them. This is not a good trajectory for the industry to be on.

Everyone should work very hard to select non-Amazon cloud platforms.

Oracle, on the other hand ... they're just a big old monolith and they need to adapt or die.

Post-America Hollywood

The reason Hollywood can't produce good films anymore is because they've been completely overwhelmed with politically correct post-American values. Today's films are made to be "woke" instead of actually *good*. Hollywood is done. It should be leveled and turned back into orange groves.

Downvote me all you want; it'll only make the truth truthier.

Analogue radio is the tech that just won't die

IGnatius T Foobar !

"Broadcasting" in general is becoming obsolete.

Forget analog/analogue vs digital. The whole idea of listening/watching a broadcast "when it's on" is becoming obsolete. As both the wireline and wireless providers move to the Internet, everything's just a data connection. Scrap the "channels" and the "stations" and the "what's on today" -- it's all tied to a model that assumes we only have an antenna/aerial and can only receive what's being spewed from the tower.

The always-on data connection is *everything* now.

A 5G day may come when the courage of cable and DSL fails ... but it is not this day

IGnatius T Foobar !

And the pendulum swings again.

Television went from antenna/aerial (wireless) to cable (wired) then to satellite (wireless) and then to fiber/fibre (wired) ... looks like data could be going there as well. For subscribers who need absolutely solid Internet all the time, such as telecommuters, that old satellite mast on the roof will now have a 5G transponder on it, wired into the home router.

(For those of us with fiber to the home, though ... we're already good, thanks)

Microsoft slips ads into Windows 10 Mail client – then U-turns so hard, it warps fabric of reality

retire these apps

The only reason the Mail and Calendar apps exist is because they are needed on smartphones. Now that Windows Phone has died, they should simply retire these two very underpowered programs.

License the OS

Apple was doing poorly in computers because they refused to license the OS to other manufacturers. This misstep would have been fatal had they not brought out the iPhone. But it's becoming increasingly apparent that it only bought them time. If Apple does not want to be constrained to an ever-decreasing high end niche, they need to begin licensing both iOS and MacOS to third party hardware manufacturers. Sorry Apple, you can't keep the ecosystem closed and expensive forever.

We Want The Desktop

Seriously, Microsoft ... your "touch first" experiment has failed. Everyone knows it. Now can we PLEASE get Windows back to the point where it is optimized for computers with upright screens, keyboards and mice ... you know, the machines where 99.999% of Windows installations are?

Vendor neutral, platform neutral, where do we go?

I'd really like to see a video/audio conferencing software that is available on all major platforms and isn't tethered to an untrustworthy company like Microsoft, Apple, Google, or especially Facebook.

IBM's Red Hat gobble: Storage will be a test of Big Blue's commitment to open-source software

IGnatius T Foobar !

Have you seen Red Hat's storage pricing?

Red Hat's storage pricing is *significantly* higher than their standard Linux distribution. The products work but if they want to displace proprietary storage they need to price it like open source.

Give the desktop some love.

Come on, Microsoft ... 99.999% of Windows users are sitting at a keyboard with a mouse. Enough with the Apple-wannabe experiments. It's time to make Windows a desktop operating system again. Windows 7 finally achieved a usable quality level, and then you went and ruined it in 8 & 10 with all of this touch-first nonsense. Windows needs to be desktop first.

Does Google make hardware just so nobody buys it?

IGnatius T Foobar !

Do we care anymore?

We penguinistas used to have high hopes for ChromeOS because it was a potential avenue for mainstream desktop Linux adoption. But now that Microsoft has given up on non-desktop platforms and Google has become at least as evil as Microsoft ... do we care anymore?

We seem to have reached a weird stability point where neither Microsoft, Google, nor Apple control enough of the market to wield monopoly influence over it.

Pentagon's JEDI mind tricks at odds with our 'values' says Google: Ad giant evaporates from $10bn cloud contract bid

The Fix Is In (tm)

It's likely that if Google has withdrawn from bidding on this contract, they're confident that the Pentagon has already selected some other cloud provider and they're not going to bother wasting resources just to satisfy someone's bureaucratic "see we got bids from multiple vendors" process.

First it came for your desktop, now Windows 10 1809 is coming for your Things

IGnatius T Foobar !

Is anyone actually using this?

IoT is characterized by a lot of things but ... Windows? Small, fast, compact, embeddable ... all the things Windows is *not* unless you really jump through hoops to get there. I can't imagine anyone is building Windows into their "things" unless those "things" resemble a desktop.

Microsoft: OK, we have no phones, but look how much we love Android

Now that Microsoft has basically conceded that Windows Phone is dead, can they PLEASE re-work the Windows 10 UI so that it's DESKTOP FIRST again? Touch elements on the desktop are sooooo annoying.

Re: With M$ Windows dead as a dodo

Windows is alive, and it's still dominant on the conventional desktop, but the days of Microsoft being able to use it as a cudgel to strongarm the entire industry are long over. That is why we are in the post-PC, post-Microsoft era.

I have to admit I foolishly assumed the post-Microsoft era would be a bit more pleasant than this. Google, Amazon, and especially Facebook are far worse than Microsoft ever was.

Election integrity is easy *if* they're willing.

Microsoft sharpens its claws to cut Outlook UI excess, snip Ribbon

IGnatius T Foobar !

Desktop UI please

Come on Microsoft, your phone experiment has failed, and it's time to make the desktop look like a desktop again. It's time to drop all of the "touch first" features and optimize every single one of your Windows and Office products for computers with keyboards, mice, and upright screens -- which is where 99.999% of Windows users are.

I've seen the future of consumer AI, and it doesn't have one

IGnatius T Foobar !

AI has been "right around the corner" for 50 years.

In the 1960's, and in the 1980's, etc. we were promised that video calling (or "picture phones" as they called it then) were right around the corner. When you made a call using that landline set attached to the wall in the kitchen, you would actually be able to *see* the person you were talking to! The reason we didn't get this sooner is because nobody actually wanted it in that form. On a computer or smartphone, in specific situations, that's where it finally happened.

AI is the same way. The digerati have been telling us for decades that AI is going to swoop in and bring us a Jetsons lifestyle. Nobody actually wants that. Machine learning and expert systems will bring improvements where it makes sense -- and none of the current "smart" products being offered make any sense. They're just traditional products with Clippy stuffed into them.

I, for one, do NOT welcome more and more of Google's intrusive AI into my world. On my Android mobe I've had to switch the launcher to Evie, the browser to Firefox, the search engine to DuckDuckGo, and disable most of the Google apps (or disable notifications if not allowed to do that) just to get the "ok google" AI to stop disrupting my life every five minutes.

Even without this latest upgrade, Google has gotten to be worse than Clippy. Thanks for making the connection in this article -- it really is an apt one. "I see you still have your smartphone. Would you like to feed Google more of your life?"

Game over for Google: Fortnite snubs Play Store, keeps its 30%, sparks security fears

IGnatius T Foobar !

Fine. Publish a second version of the game that is available on the Play Store and costs 30% more. Let the users know where their money went.

IGnatius T Foobar !

This is good.

This is a perfect way for non-technical users to learn the joys and benefits of sideloading apps. Remember, a sideloaded app is still sandboxed. The only downside is that you don't get the automatic updates (unless the app provides its own provision for that).

Micro$oft is dreaming of the day it can lock down the desktop to Store-only. They, Apple, and Google all want total control, absolute monopoly. May that day never come, on any platform.

Exactly. Whenever I see an article like this, I scroll to the top and sure enough, it's from El Reg's bureau in San Francisco. Seriously guys, we come here to read about tech, which for many of us is one of our few precious escapes from today's hyper-politicized world. Please don't bring the bad stuff in here.

Amazon, ditch us? But they can't do without us – Oracle

IGnatius T Foobar !

It isn't happening until...

It isn't happening until it is. This is similar to the way Microsoft took many years and multiple failed attempts to migrate its own accounting system from AS/400 to Windows Server. Amazon is similarly motivated to move its own databases from Oracle to its own. It won't happen overnight, and there will likely be some failed attempts, but eventually it's going to happen.

Oracle can absolutely count on losing Amazon as a customer. Oracle's focus should be on providing a better cloud-connected database than the one Amazon has.

Microsoft: We've almost dug Your Phone out behind sofa. But will it make Insiders app-y?
