All about mobile and touch? I wish, only cpp oss folks think QT is good for mobile, it doesn't appear on anyone elses multi platform mobile radar, because it's a gigantic mess that makes mobile development ten times more complicated for the justification of one code base. that's not much good if your code base is now ten times larger than it was before with a mess of dependencies of things never compiled for arm and never optimised for mobile. We spend more times on conan scripts and fixing the build every couple of days than coding.

All optimised UI elements, throw them out of the window and use QTs home built system. Could do something with a few lines in native, ha, no, get new library, and all it's dependencies, and write a mass of cpp code with ten times more room for error.

Memory management? Manage it all yourself again. Multiple device sizes? you need to implement all that yourself. Latest OS features? maybe in a few years they'll get round to it. AR, forget it, you'll implement it all native anyway, like other little things that just don't quite work.

And multi platform??? We still haven't shipped an android build after a year.

I know this because Apple make you declare your encryption standards in any app you submit app with the specific reason that your app will be uploaded to apple servers in the US and they have to do that to comply, we have to write a little note to some department somewhere too.

I'm mostly in favour of the more rigourous process of the app store. It prevents shovelware, spyware, copycats (to some extent), poor security management, "clever" hacks that play havoc with people devices and generally promotes the ideal that apps should be useable and good.

It's quite clear why Apple do it, although it may be an inconvenience, an app store flooded with terrible apps just puts users off the product as a whole. This policing provides trust for the user that downloading an app won't do anything unexpected.

While you may feel inconvenienced by it, the software industry as a whole has proved time and time again it will do anything it can to shovel crap to users. Apple try to limit that.

For iOS, they have to jailbreak the phone to install, there's various ways to detect that, but also a restore will remove it too.

I was reading a bunch of reviews on another spyware app (flexispy I think), my word it was creepy, various people with no concept of boundaries wanting to track every movement and listen on every private conversation of their kids, spouses, employees, ugh. But many we're frustrated it was hard to install on iOS and demanding their money back

'm more inclined to believe there was a drone, I saw a lot of people arguing that it just wasn't possible for a drone to operate in the way it did and use that as evidence for no drone, but as someone who works with all manner of drones, I can confirm that all weather drones with long ranges and large enough to do damage to an aircraft do in fact exist and are fairly easy to come by (though not as cheap as something you'd buy from an electronics store).

And flying them I know how very difficult it is to spot the buggers once they get any distance away, they don't show up on phone cameras, and airports don't let press photographers roam everywhere such that a perfect 100% even distribution of photographers would exist to catch the drone wherever it appeared, so I don't buy that it surely would have been photographed.

In short, while it's true it could all be a hoax, I don't think the reasons I've ever read on why it must be a hoax hold any water.

The filter isn't part of the law, but many are saying it's actually what will happen in practice. And doesn't the new law place onus on the websites to not allow copyrighted material and that they should take all reasonable steps to stop it.

That's been happening since before facebook, in my experience, the sort of people who spread the real nutty stuff barely read past the first few sentences that get them enraged, before immediately reposting to spread the real truth. These posts are often accompanied by linked reputable articles, to try to give legitimacy, that mention similar words to the ranty email in the first few sentences, enough that convinces the nutty reader that the rest of the article will support outlandish viewpoint.

So to auto generate conspiracy theories, maybe all you have to do is skim scholarly articles and sites like prison planet or natural news, looking for words in the opening paragraph of the scholarly articles that overlap with the kook sites, then train the AI to use the language of the kooky site and seeding new posts using overlapped words, then publish with linked article and boom, gay frogs are coming to take over the world or something.

It's now much better on mobile though, the old design was terrible, and I often wondered why a tech site couldn't come up with a decent mobile site...

But there are more than a few techies who seem to think a useable decent looking UI is for wimps, and people browsing on mobile are stupid millennial types who want the moon on a stick and they should be using a desktop anyway, or possibly android because all apple users are fashionistas or something.

Ugh, yes drones can fly in bad weather and the dark, the battery life isn't exceptional as it was only over the airport for a few minutes at a time, with time to and from and takeoff locations, easily within the twenty minute flight times of modern drones, which come with quick change, quick charge batteries. Commercial/Professional drones are readily available to anyone willing to pay the cash.

Yeah, talking to a user is great, that user has this one field they want to do their task a little easier, maybe it has impacts on others users, that one user don't care, doesn't care that other users don't need that field, it gets implemented, other users look at it, what's it for? now when they tab through they get this extra field where there wasn't one before and it screws up their workflow, what do they put in it anyway? can you just take it away please?

Or maybe you'll need to make some major refactoring to implement their 'small' change, costing your valuable time, for something that's just not really worth the effort.

Many of Apple's app store restrictions and vetting are very security minded and customer friendly, and I'm sure it infuriates some people, just don't buy an iphone?

I'll say it over and over, on any tech websites, there's a bunch of people who think they're very smart and don't understand how normal people don't want to vet everything they install on their smartphone because it shouldn't be easy to break your goddam phone and then take it to some nerd to sneer at you saying you should have checked the software you installed on it and if only they'd consulted them they wouldn't be in this mess.

People who work in IT vastly overestimate the abilities of people who don't.It's why Apple is hugely successful and IT types always take this line. I want my computer to do this and do what I want and anyone who says different is stupid.

Apple made it so customers can mostly download app from the store and it doesn't do weird stuff to their phone, doesn't have complete access to all their data, doesn't let the really smart developer try stuff they really shouldn't be messing around with to get some super cool feature they figured out to implement in a hacky way that they know they're smart enough to implement, but will blame the user when it conflicts with some other "shitty app" that the user should have come to the engineer to to be told it was a shitty app.
