Intel chases after Bitcoin miners with dedicated chip

Re: "Intel will start selling a chip to mine bitcoin"

I think the naysayers are mostly consoling soothing themselves for not having got in on Bitcoin early. Firstly, there's nearly 10000 other cryptocurrencies presently. To say "Bitcoin is nearing end-of-life, the number of minable coins is almost depleted." is ridiculous, although the Headline did specify "Bitcoin" rather than the more accurate label "cryptocurrency", so Garbage In, Garbage Out.

And again "Block chain is a terrible ledger system" (Blockchain is one word, bazza) perhaps may apply to Bitcoin only, maybe for 8000 other cryptocurrencies, doesn't apply to the entire blockchain concept "it is also being used to record and track transactions of assets in verticals like manufacturing and real estate". So, such a bad system is getting quite a bit of traction again the Register doesn't mention the financial sector. The "City of London" is certainly taking notice.

But who am I? I'm just a guy watching my $100US Bitcoins bounce back to over $41,000US. I guess I'm a total idiot!

Re: @Dan 55: There's something I don't get

Yes and no. For example Climate Change. (I know you'll ignore this is you are still a firm nonbeliever, don't bother responding) At some point our largest corporations will go "Ohhh, I get it now. If we aren't responsible in any other way than to make (short-term) profit, we'll all be f'cked!" That, in decades time the best, most profitable move, is to work collectively to solve the problem. That, the real world punishes continual Prisoner's Dilemma decisions.

Where's Hardened Gentoo when needed?

Is it a coincidence that " Hardened Gentoo" seems to have been languishing since at least Jan 2016? https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Talk:Hardened_Gentoo - a question about documentation ("what is 'cd grub?'") was responded to, but not answered. A second "discussion" was started in Dec 2017 about the need for updates to the wiki page. Now, I understand much or all of the work of this project has migrated or been subsumed into Gentoo's SELinux, but the old stuff has been left dangling in the wind, as it were. Disinterest seems to have affected, or infected!, the Gentoo project! What is going on there?

not only we be long dead...

"And by that measure, come the year 2088," I'm pretty skeptical that civilization as we know it will be around 2088. I realize the author tries to integrate it into the article. Maybe it comes from trying to hard to avoid https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI_takeover talk? Sometimes I get the feeling I'm seeing Fermi's Paradox play out right before me though. The near extinction of organized human life certainly seems to be a key operating principal of the US Republican party. (That might seem political, but I think the Democratic party will lead us into the same armageddon, just with less foresight, more accidentally) Have a nice day!
