Facebook flat-out 'lies' about how many people can see its ads – lawsuit

Davisch

Read the contract

I have nothing good to say about FB but my first impression is that this suit probably won't anywhere.

The key is in the word 'reach' , in the Chicago example I bet the contract doesn't specify Chicago or environs. People living in Alaska/Mongolia etc. who are FB 'friends' of someone in Chicago are part of the advert's 'reach'.

Fix this faxing hell! NHS told to stop hanging onto archaic tech

Re: UK Intellectual Property Office - Sorry can you FAX that

"The reason? Apparently this is because they need to have it date stamped and counted by their document reception department only for it then to be scanned in. Sounds like some wonderful job creation right there."

This is a legal requirement. Under a first to file patent system the first physical filing is the one that gets the patent. Hence the requirement for a time stamp step. An email would have to be printed then time stamped or have some way to validate time of arrival. This could be done but getting the courts to accept it would take some doing.

Re: I thought of the child(ren)

The scuttlebutt (which includes comments from police) is that if you're going to shoot someone in that kind of situation, you'd better kill them.

Yep, in my experience dead people seldom complain

Re: I thought of the child(ren)

Have an upvote sir, see my post above for why.

Re: I thought of the child(ren)

Just a small correction here. You seem to have been infected by the NRA description of .22s as 'plinking (sp?)' guns, so a couple of properties is good enough to stop the bullets. Fact is that when I first encountered them a .22 long rifle round was classified as potentially lethal up to 2 miles i.e. you don't have to have an aimed target to kill someone.

Little known fact: Most national level agencies that did that sort of thing preferred slightly overloaded .22 long rifle rounds for assassination. More of the kinetic energy would be transferred to the target, and distance was not normally a factor.

Re: Implied consent

It is actually a concept in all legal codes I've come across. Basically it means that if for e.g. you hire a plumber to fix your kitchen sink at an approximate time, you have almost no chance of a successful trespass claim if said plumber is on you property anywhere near that time.

That said, I don't see how it would work in this case.

Ah yes, opt in/out

Me: I don't want to opt in to your voice recognition service.

Droid: Of course sir, no problem, I'll flag your account. You'll have to use some way to identify yourself though.

Me: OK shouldn't be a problem I'll ... (Droid interrupts)

Droid: Our requirements are that you select a contact office (see attached list) that is at least 30 miles from the address we have for you.

Carrying your mobile so we can check your location. Proceed on foot for at least 80 percent of the distance required. To avoid possible interference no motorized or metallic conveyance should be used from that point.

We suggest you proceed as a pedestrian or on horseback. Please time your journey to arrive at the selected office between 03H15 and 03H54.

On arrival please announce yourself with <secret random passphrase that matched what you wanted you to opt in to>.

Me: But I wanted to register a change of address from Poland to Manchester.

Droid: Then you should have started the process a little earlier. The rules require at most 14 days for change of address notification. I'd suggest you go back to Poland and start walking briskly.

Me: ????

Droid: I'm sure that answers you question sir, have a nice day, goodbye

Computer Misuse Act charge against British judge thrown out

Re: Thrown out? Or she should be jailed?

@ Gordon Pryra

"She is a Judge, how can she judge anyone if she is breaking laws herself? "

Ummm ...., you seem to have lost sight of the fact that if you are not found guilty you haven't broken the law.

Trump kept ZTE alive as ‘personal favour’ to Chinese president Xi

Re: "The US president claims he’s a negotiator"...

In Trump's opinion, if it doesn't cost him personally, it is de facto a good deal. What it costs everyone else is beside the point.

Astronaut took camera on spacewalk, but forgot SD memory card

Davisch

Probably nothing to do with the people reported on

No need to invoke stress etc to explain things.

The snippet in the article makes it damn plain that the camera was part of the official profile for the EVA, but wasn't a critical part of the the mission. As such it would have been included in the pre-EVA checklist as something like 'is camera firmly attached to point X on suit' and is it unobstructed.

The camera should have been prepped (and possibly attached) prior to the astronaut even seeing it for the first time. The next step involving the camera would be: '... and then press button Y to turn on the camera:- report status', which is exactly what happened.

I'm most impressed that the astronaut didn't at some point say "you wankers sent this up here without an SD card, didn't you? OH FUCK! I'm relying on you to get home".

Cutting custody snaps too costly for cash-strapped cops – UK.gov

FAIL

Too difficult?

What a bunch of fucking numpties.

If you don't put it the database to begin with you don't have to find it to delete it.

Put the pre-conviction images in a PRE-FUCKING-CONVICTION database and only transfer them on conviction. That way you can just delete them from the pre-conviction database, after X amount of time, regardless of conviction status: simples.

The local plod should work on the same basis. Once it has been sent to the national register, it gets purged automatically, they can still get the info from the central database.
