Macs to Linux fans: Stop right there, Penguinista scum, that's not macOS. Go on, git outta here

Old Air

I shelled out for my first Mac a few years back, a Macbook Air with all the useful ports that Apple removed in the last few years. For what it was (a 2013 model) the price was pretty reasonable as well compared to similar choices. Once MacOS support is dropped along with firmware updates (prob in another 12-18 months or so) it will have a Linux distro of my choice installed on it as it's still mechanically sound and does everything I want / need.

Can't help thinking that Apple have lost the plot with their decisions since then. I wouldn't touch the new Macbooks with a barge pole, regardless of how shiny they are.

UK.gov to roll out voter ID trials in 2019 local elections

Actually, this isn't a solution looking for a problem. The problem the government has is that some kinds of people are less likely to vote for them. The solution is that producing the kind of ID required by these measures is more difficult for these kinds of people and so it will lead to a suppression in their turnout.

If you want to know where this idea came from, look across the Atlantic at the Republican Party who regularly use these tactics to target minority groups, mostly in Southern states.

Actually, a Dutch friend of mine told me that the Netherlands gov's love of record keeping long pre-dated 1939 and it actually facilitated the abuses that occurred under the Nazis. As his father was detained by the Gestapo I would imagine he knew a little more about it than most.

Nobody in our management team got the sign with their fondleslabs.

Indeed, particularly that period between 1933 and 1945.

UK.gov should spend more on AI, bleat VCs and consultants. Oh? Why's that then?

Re: A Wise Man Once Said...

I hear my elders' criticisms of my generation being echoed by my generation about today's generation, albeit with a slightly different straw man being used to justify the same bullshit. Given the kind of stuff some of us got up to, today's children are positively saintly in comparison. Of course this is also used as a stick to beat them with.

Western civilisation: a few years away from total moral collapse for the last 1000 years. Maybe the broken clock will be right one of these days but I'm not holding my breath.

Corporate Social Credit

"Dear John,

As a result of recent activity on LinkedIn, your Corporate Social Credit score has been re-evaulated. As a result of this you may notice some minor changes in your employment conditions to ensure a harmonious workplace and to strive for enlightened relationships in your career.

Your data allocation has been slightly reduced from 20 Gb to 200 Mb. Please ensure that any large files you require are downloaded from the network before Friday!

Your assigned corporate environmental footprint has been somewhat reduced. You may wish to make alternative arrangements for personal hygiene purposes while at the office premises.

Your period of notice upon leaving the company has been optimised and now consists of a two year period to allow for succession planning. Of course, all salary and bonus due will be fully honoured over this time.

If you feel these changes are unreasonable then please engage with Pris, our cloud based AI HR assistant who will be happy to help you achieve serene acquiescence during the transition period.

Thanks for your time!

Battle Group

So... this will be a British carrier with half-US planes, escorted by 4-6 US cruisers and frigates and probably a US attack sub as well?

Rule Britannia indeed.

Russian-monitoring Shetlands radar station was nearly sold off

Meh

AWACS

Probably a lot cheaper to run a radar station than to pay for continuous AWACS coverage of that area. When you tot up things like tanker support it probably gets eye wateringly expensive.

A ground based radar is well capable of spotting the odd Bear lumbering through international airspace at medium altitude and it will play well with the kind of people who get palpitations every time a Russian plane flies within 200 miles of dear old Blighty.

As this is a ground based radar, by the time it spotted any Russian ships it would be too late anyway (as happened in 2013 when a Russian cruiser got to within 30 miles of RAF Lossiemouth).

Actual military value? Saves wear and tear on AWACS... um...

UK.gov unveils six areas to pilot full-fat fibre, and London ain't on the list

Re: London not on the list

"Note that neither Glasgow nor Edinburgh are on the list but that remote outpost called Aberdeen."

Maybe it was included because it's only one of two regions outside of London that has above average productivity?

The other one is Bristol, which is also on the list, which is also a high-tech industrial centre outside of the SE.

Re: Not a problem

Great idea, except that they can't regulate because telecoms is an area that is reserved to the Westminster parliament.
