How do some of the best AI algorithms perform on real robots? Not well, it turns out

RareToy

Great robots playing Doom. Those will be the first to become self-aware and take the game into the real world. Or at least that's the way my luck would run.

Done and dusted? Vast storm gobbles NASA's long-lived Mars robot

Re: Dont worry guys......flatty mcflatface!

Just so you know... the CL4P-TP makes good use of it's single wheel design.

That was quick: Seattle rushes to kill tax that would mildly inconvenience Amazon

RareToy

Or maybe... just maybe they're trying to save their jobs. 7 of the 9 are up for re-election and saw the grassroot fury building. Maybe those 7 can find a lemonade stand they can run into the ground.

Softbank's 'Pepper' robot is a security joke

RareToy

Robots are like any other machine. They're either a benefit or a hazard. If they're a benefit it's not my problem.

You know that silly fear about Alexa recording everything and leaking it online? It just happened

RareToy

There is also a trigger frequency. I have had some EDM/Techno music playing on my Echo and it will trigger from time to time. I have also had a TV commercial say "Mark this on your calendar" and my Echo lit up and said "You don't have your calendar linked to the system". I am not home most of the time, so it's just recording silence for me. One day I'll get a frequency generator and go up the tones until I find it. It has to be a really high frequency as I'm good at picking up on low frequencies.

Scientists change their minds, think water may be all over the Moon

**Iron Sky movie flashback**

But what about all the Helium 3 and Nazi's on the moon? ;) hahaha j/k

Equifax hack worse than previously thought: Biz kissed goodbye to card expiry dates, tax IDs etc

RareToy

That's the kind of job I want. Screw up real bad, take a golden parachute of a retirement package and not be held responsible for anything. Where do I sign up?

NASA finds satellite, realises it has lost the software and kit that talk to it

RareToy

I hope they MacGyver an interface and are able to turn on and complete the mission of that satellite

Twilight of the idols: The only philosophy HPE and IBM do these days is with an axe

RareToy

Possible solution

How about we outsource CEO's and other upper executive officers? Maybe reduce the board of directors to a council of 7 with one of those members representing the hard working labor force? They help create the idea. They worked the long hours to debug the dang thing. Why shouldn't they have an advocate at the upper levels?

Ice cliffs found on Mars and NASA says they’re a tap for astronauts

Re: Don't drink the water!!!

Yes! We've seen this on Star Trek (old and next gen), some complex water molecules causes an intoxication like effect.

What will drive our cars when the combustion engine dies?

RareToy

What source will be our next fuel?? Where will we get it? Same place we get Soylent Green from. :)

*dawns tin foil hat* That or we'll finally listen to our alien advisors and make the exotic fuels they've been showing us how to make that are pollution free.

Microsoft scoops Search UI out from the gaping black maw of Cortana

RareToy

Yes, just what I want. An annoyance in the middle of my screen and probably serving ads too.

Facebook's send-us-your-nudes service is coming to UK, America

RareToy

What about MIT's pixel adding routine that misleads and tricks AI into misidentifying a photo?

A draft US law to secure election computers that isn't braindead. Well, I'm stunned! I gotta lie down

RareToy

But the contract will still go to Diebold equipment because they've done government election equipment in the past. Therefore a preferred vendor. So how much will really change? The design specs will, in my opinion, probably be written in a way that only Diebold can win it, or by it's very nature be unsecure or have a backdoor.

MH370 final report: Aussies still don’t know where it crashed or why

RareToy

ALIENS!!! Or perhaps we could train some dolphins? hahahahaha

Ok Seriously now, we will find it eventually. There will be someone looking for something else or on some other task and will stumble across it. My question is, how much time can pass with pressure and sea water before the data recorders are totally useless if not already?

Angst in her pants: Alleged US govt leaker Reality Winner stashed docs in her pantyhose

RareToy

I don't feel sorry for her at all. When you take high security positions, you are entrusted with sensitive materials that are not designed/intended to be openly released. You sign documents before you even get your badge stating you will not behave this way. I'm so tired of people feeling that THEIR values are more important. When you work at that level, you do not get to see the big picture.

Granted, there are provisions for whistle blowers. But this was not the case. I would have given her 20 years if it was up to me.

Ah, good ol' Windows update cycles... Wait, before anything else, check your hardware

RareToy

Windows 10 should mean fewer headaches for the IT department.

Until they take a feature you use exclusively. Or remove DLL's a program you use, was using.

Equifax's disastrous Struts patching blunder: THOUSANDS of other orgs did it too

RareToy

And there's the problem - nobody wants to pay for something they think that they can get for free ...

So many businesses think they can cut corners on the IT support. While you probably could let Joe in sales who bought a website template and runs it at home fix your production network, it is no substitute for a real experienced IT staff. Their education (and continuing education) is not cheap. Everyone has to pay somehow. The CTO has to decided when they are going to pay, now or later.

Cassini probe's death dive to send data at just 27 kilobits per second

RareToy

Someone check Cassini's glovebox. I think there is a can of liquid schwartz in there. I knew we should have put more than a few bucks in for fuel.

It's the incept date that was chosen. 4 year life span.

Indian call centre scammers are targeting BT customers

RareToy

I like messing with the scammers. "Oh my computer is leaking a virus. You say you're from Microsoft? Oh you're on the main campus? Let's talk this over. What's your building and office number, I'll have a shuttle there in a few minutes. **CLICK**"

Or "who is this? what is your operating number?"

Please, pleeeease let me ban Kaspersky Lab from US govt PCs – senator

RareToy

I love my Kaspersky protection. It works great for me and I haven't had any problems. I trust them more than I trust my own government.

Facebook's music plans mean you'll never leave Facebook

RareToy

I would not be surprised if Facebook pairs with mobile carriers and puts the Facebook App and Messenger app in the "carrier bloatware" so most mobile users can't remove it.

AKIRAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

PC sales to fall and fall and fall and fall and fall for the next five years

RareToy

Re: Market saturaton

>Unless you have more specialist requirements, for example gaming or high end video work, most PCs bought within the last 5 years are still good enough and do the job.

Exactly. My mom still uses a 2011 i3 and outside of a slow boot up time, it does everything she needs. I just built a new system to replace my 2011 i7, and the configuration will last me another 8 years (although the M2 SSD will probably need a swap out at 3 or 4 years). People will always need a PC, but just not as many as before.

Strip club selfie bloke's accidental discharge gets him 6 years in clink

RareToy

"Sorn explained that he didn’t realize the gun was loaded,"

Ahhh. He needs to go back to firearm safety classes.

4 rules of gun safety:

1) The Gun Is Always Loaded

2) Always Be Sure Of Your Target And What Is Behind It

3) Never Point The Gun At Something You Are Not Prepared To Destroy

4) Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until You're Ready to Fire

Are Asimov's laws enough to stop AI stomping humanity?

RareToy

Re: Not meant to be taken seriously

Forget about accidentally. No matter how many guidelines, frameworks, and rules for AI you put down, there is always some Dr. Moreau out there who will ignore all of that and do whatever he/she wants.

APT-style attack against over 4,000 infrastructure firms blamed on lone Nigerian 20-something

Is he a prince too? If so, I think I might have received an email from him in my bit bucket.

RBS sharpens axe again: 900 IT jobs to go by 2020

RareToy

Reducing IT

When your low bid outsourced IT department is behind on patches and then you have a network breach, are we going to see the crying CTO saying "We did everything we could. Here is some free monitoring service for a year. Which is also outsourced to the same outfit that couldn't keep up on security patches."
