Which scientist should be on the new £50 note? El Reg weighs in – and you should vote, too

Albert Niemann (chemist)

Albert Friedrich Emil Niemann. I know he's not British, but his discovery is more associated with £50 notes than anyone else's.

Lets not forget that one of the main reasons why Android was better than Symbian and Windows Mobile was because Google refused to support those platforms with their services like Maps and YouTube.

Time to force two-factor authentication?

"To mitigate this risk, we encourage every npmjs.com user to enable two-factor authentication, with which this morning’s incident would have been impossible."

Surely it is time npm forced two-factor authentication rather than just encouraging it?

Just because you have found a file on the internet doesn't mean it's a security issue.

Can someone tell us how these researchers know all the files were not supposed to be public documents?

Isn't it time HoloLens got past being a developer only product? Maybe they will announce that at Build, but knowing Microsoft we will have to wait until all the market momentum has passed.

Re: Microsoft's idea of system administration...

"Anyone sane running services in Ubuntu VMs will be running Ubuntu *Server* edition which cuts out the desktop."

Those of us that are developing cross platform desktop apps will probably find this very useful. Not everyone is a server administrator!

Currently I have a Surface Pro 3 and duel boot it because Ubuntu running in a VM doesn't seem to support the high dpi screen. I know I could probably get this working with a different virtualisation platform, but it's easier to use the one build into the host OS.

No, Windows 10 hasn’t beaten Windows 7’s market share. Not for sure, anyway

I wish they would give figures rather than percentages

It is never clear from these charts whether total Windows usage has stayed the same with people switching to the new version or whether there are a load of new Windows users and the number of Windows 7 users has stayed the same. It is likely to be a bit of both but without actual figures it is hard to tell.

Don't keep your Mac in a Merc

So things I've learnt this week about security:

1. Disable remote access

I use Bing and I know it

I've never had a situation where I couldn't find what I wanted in Bing and could find it in Google. Plus I like Bing's daily pictures. Call me weird if you want, I don't care.

How can you kill that which will not die? Windows XP is back (sorta... OK, not really)

I wonder how the total size of the market has changed?

These stats are always given as a % of some unknown total. So Android has a bigger percentage and Windows a smaller percentage, but that doesn't necessarily mean that there are less Windows users. It may just mean that the market grew and most the new users chose Android.
