HP LaserJet

For longevity the older HP LaserJets were legendary.

I remember working in my early IT days and even in a busy office the only faults seem to be when a used put rubbish quality paper and caused jams. Maybe the longevity is related to them having print engines made by Canon.

My own colour LaserJet must be around 15 years old now, only annoyance is when it decides to do it's automatic & noisy cleaning cycle at 2am!

Toner cartridges are expensive but last for thousands of pages and don't dry out like inkjet so cost effective in the long run.

XP Embedded

XP Embedded was used in a range of ATMs, probably quite a lot still out there.

Also seen at my local train station was BSOD on the massive / fancy graphics passenger information board! That's despite the old small "legacy" board hidden away in the corner with LED matrix and a 9600 baud serial connection working just fine.

Post-It Note

A cut-out Post-It note is all that's required to block camera access, that should't break the display and costs almost nothing.

No Outsource Clause

Maybe COOP should have specified a "no outsource clause" or at least made it a condition that any outsource of services would be declared upfront and agreed between the various parties.

The only way I know if Windows10 has updated is if it has turned itself off or rebooted overnight with fresh wallpaper ready for the morning!

Catalina Broke my Scanner

Yep, upgraded to Catalina and it broke my fairly new Canon scanner. Ended up buying some dedicated scanner software and the upside is that it's much better than the free Canon software.

Carphone

I remember one family holiday in the Lake District (dad had an F-Reg Peugeot 405 to date this) we spent ages driving round so that he could get a mobile signal strong enough for a reasonably clear voice signal to provide support back to engineering HQ. In those days it was an analogue carphone with the base wired into the dash and the handset (green LED backlit buttons) on a curly cord. He had the 1.9 (same engine as the Peugeot 205 GTi) which I was quite keen to get my hands on of course, but the company car insurance brought in new T&C's on the policy just weeks before I passed my driving test!

Seems unlikely that anyone would attempt to repair this kind of product anyway.

There's a few of these BT InLinkUK kiosk things here in Leeds. Can't recall ever seeing anyone using them.

Not Penny Pinching, but Opportunity Pinching

In 1999 as a very junior network guy I flew to Dublin with two much more senior management colleagues as part of a project meeting to a prominent client which was an Irish bank. I was a bit nervous for various reasons, but the anticipated upsides were free flights, a decent 4* hotel and a night out in Dublin which sounded great.

It transpired that we were staying in the suburb of Ballsbridge and my more senior colleagues only really wanted to stray as far as the local Italian restaurant and go to bed early. All I saw of Dublin was a view from the taxi window.
