And they didn't bother even looking with a program like Recuva? Considering that most hard drives nowadays are 1 TB and older computers might have 100 GB minimum, and the Windows update takes only a few gigabytes and the personal documents were lost in the middle of the upgrade,there is a good chance the files could still be recovered.
