Not even the ghost of obsolescence can coerce users onto Windows 11

Windows 11 issues

I recently switched from Devuan Linux to W11 due to niche software requirements that Linux has no equivalent for (drivers for health care equipment). But there are fixes for W11's most annoying issues:

* My Dell Optiplex 7040 is running an older CPU that W11 doesn't officially support. On another W10 box, I burned a bootable USB key using Rufus which allows you to slipstream fixes to W11 to ignore the processor, TPM, and memory requirements and allow you to create a local account bypassing the "online account" requirement. Of course, M$ could break this at any time, but it's worked so far.

* I used O&O Software's ShutUp10++ and AppBuster software to curb M$'s appetite for telemetry and bloatware.

* If you don't like the task bar centered, right-click on the taskbar, select "Taskbar Setttings" -> Taskbar Behaviors -> Taskbar Alignment, then choose your preference of location.

I still prefer Linux but since I have to run Windows, I took a modicum of time, did a little Web searching, and found answers to my questions. So far, so good. Linux still has much better performance than W11 but for my simple needs these days, I don't notice it much. I would switch back to Linux in a heartbeat if I could but since I can't, I'm trying to make the best of it.

Re: BBS

Fidonet's still around but has been moribund for many years. There's a lot of FTN-style "othernets" that are much more active. I'm still running a BBS I set up under OS/2 in 1996 available via telnet. All this talk about NNTP is making me think about gating NNTP to my board just because I can.

Re: A spelling question.

"sic", in this usage, is a Latin word meaning "so" or "thus" and is used to represent a quoted phrase with spelling or grammatical errors though your "backronym" is pretty funny. I think that the author was referring to Ukraine being formerly called "the Ukraine", a shortened form of the country's name under the Soviet Union of "the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic". That ("the Ukraine") form that has been officially depreciated by the Ukranian government.

Dogs wander the streets and other people's property also. They're just as bad for crapping in your yard as cats are. In some cities in America, humans are notorious for crapping in your yard too.

Wonder if that contraption would work on humans also...

If it wasn't for my job, I would be wearing a pager. There is a nationwide pager service provider that I have used that allows for unlimited alphanumeric paging for about US$15 a month. I have one of their brand-new alphanumeric pagers--a Motorola Adviser Gold knockoff--sitting in a drawer in my study ready for use.

I absolutely detest cell phones. I always have. But I've always been a bit of an anachronistic person in respect to communications. (I'm an amateur radio operator also.)

Re: "the world is clinging stubbornly to IPv4"

> The vast majority of ISP supplied routers are IPv4 only.

> Most residential ISPs only deliver an IPv4 service.

I think you hit the nail on the head with that. I'd say that it's also a supply and demand issue: if people started demanding v6, the ISPs would start supplying it. Outside of professional IT, however, no one cares what happens behind the scenes if their Internet connection works as they feel it should.

Re: "the world is clinging stubbornly to IPv4"

I guess you've never heard of VPN then, right? There's a lot of critical infrastructure that uses the public Internet through VPN.

Re: "the world is clinging stubbornly to IPv4"

There is an excellent book called "The Dream Machine: J.C.R. Licklider and the Revolution That Made Computing Personal" that talks about how the Internet came about and how it was very much a military, not academic, project for a long time. Academics weren't really involved with the Internet (nee ARPANET) until much later outside of the Department of Defense scope.

Dependency hell

Hi everyone,

I've been using Slackware for about 20 years now. Always stable, never any problems, and just to let you know that there's several packaging programs that solve dependency issues if you want them. I use sbopkg with a script called sboinst. I run sboinst and it installs things like SpamAssassin and its dozens of dependencies with a single command line.

I don't use it that much as I still prefer to build most packages myself. Prebuilt packages are all over but I use pkgs.org personally.

I run a BBS under Slackware (yes, that kind of a BBS) and it's extremely reliable. No need to switch after all of these years.
