Have YOU had your breakfast pint? Boffins confirm cheeky daily tipple is good for you

Midsummer Dream

I usually destress by going for a run. I also enjoy a Pint or several. Those wonderful people at Axe Valley Runners used to put on the ideal event, the " Midsummer Dream ( in search of the uncarved block ) "

The run evolved over the years but always started outside the Hook and Parrot.

14 or 16 miles of gloriously scenic cross country running, six pubs en route with a Pint quaffed in each.

Halfway point was at a Village Hall where a full Cream Tea was laid on.

It was a circular route so you could choose which direction to run, the last ( or first ) Pub held a music / beer festival over the same weekend, many never made it further.

Only an hour or so until Beer O'clock, today I'll raise a toast to the folk at Axe Vally runners.

I've been using my trusty Panasonic bread machine for several years now, experimenting just as you said ( although I did once forget to add water and wondered what the strange smell coming from the machine was.)

I've found adding 50g of Porridge oats to the mix gives a lovely crunchy crust.

Re: Why is Garmin

I've been using Garmin watches for many years. I'm a runner and as you say they are great bits of kit for sports people.

My current model is the 235, battery life of well over a week with constant heart rate, sleep and step monitoring, 10 hours -ish in GPS Mode. Text messages appear on my wrist and any app notification that I give permission for plus Bluetooth music control for my phone.

Downloadable apps and customisable watch faces, plus if you are in a strange town just start a background activity when you leave your car / hotel and if you get disorientated / inebriated then the watch displays a big arrow with the distance and direction back to where you started.

I think they are underestimated by people who just see them as Sports watches and aren't aware of their other varied functions.

When Samsung reveals the S9 at MWC, at least try to act surprised

Trumpet Winsock

I have the S7 which I got just after it was released. Overall I've been very pleased with it especially the camera.

I do notice that the software is still Android 7.0 although the security patches seem to come through regularly, the latest security patch says January 2018.

Do Samsung ever update the software, I'd like to try Oreo having read a few favourable reports

Surgeon

Before I retired I used to walk the couple of miles into work. Part of my route went along the main road into town.

From time to time a sports car would go past with the registration TIB 1A. Yep, apparently a surgeon at the local hospital.

One of the people who worked there told me that the surgeons wife also worked as a surgeon at the hospital and her car reg was FIB 1A. I'm not sure if they were winding me up about that.

Re: Milton Keynes - a candidate for a city of culture????

Ah, Milton Keynes Shopping Centre. I knew it briefly but well, and still shudder at the memory.

In the 1980's and as a much younger and more naive man I accepted an invitation to compete in an indoor race to be held at the shopping centre.

Laps, around the inside of the shopping centre, on marble, for 24 hours. The changing / rest facilities were up a flight of stairs. What could possibly go wrong.

It took months for the legs to recover, but on a positive note I did learn to be more circumspect in what I took on, plus I managed to memorise most of the prices in the shop windows that I ran past ;-)

The Chunnel!

I used to arrive at work every day before the boss, pop into his office and phone the dedicated Channel Tunnel construction line to hear a recorded announcement giving the progress of the North and South running tunnels IIRC.

It was only a couple of months ago that I got to travel on Eurostar from Bruxelles to London. Unfortunately I was that knackered that I fell asleep shortly after leaving Bruxelles and when I awoke we were in England so I never got to see the fish ;-)

My daughter has trained her cat to use one of these. When I visit it is pretty surreal to be lying in bed and hearing the cat taking a piss in the toilet next door, especially as due to my advancing years the bastards flow rate is greater than mine.

Re: WTF

I think you meant " and that's with GPS, and Bluetooth on all the time "

I have had several Garmin watches over the years and the GPS drains the battery in a matter of hours.

I'm currently using the 235 and it lasts a good week with Bluetooth. GPS uses about 10% battery per hour.

You will get more GPS life using one of the Triathlon watches but even then you'll be lucky to get 14-16 hours.

Your reference to 24 Hour races made me laugh, as a fellow Headbanger back in the 80's I remember pressing "Start " on my trusty Casio watch and realising how daft it was.

Agree with the points mentioned in your post, I have a Samsung with wireless charging which gets plonked on the bedside charger each night.
