Samsung commits to 5 years of Android updates... for its enterprise smartphone users at least

MarkElmes

Well it was the cell phone carriers who lead that design choice, they wanted to bundle in as much bloatware as possible and Apple made a stand to not allow that to happen, so naturally Android became a very popular choice amongst all manufacturers

MarkElmes

Re: No thanks

This just goes to show how slow manufacturers are to update their phones - people here worried about the impact Android 11 may make to their phones, yet my Pixel 4XL is already on the Android 12 beta..

I would have just taken the 300k offered, still an obscene amount and better than nothing!

Google patches WebView component to end unexpected Android crash fest

MarkElmes

Come on Google....

This is really bad! I had both my mother and my partner contacting me with almost dead phones yesterday, unable to launch nearly every app, Google search, Gmail, Chrome, all instantly crashing. One phone was a Pixel 5 and the other an old Samsung S7, updates on the Play store didn't fix it, I had to get them both to revert webview/chrome to the factory version. This would have been hell for users that didn't know to do this, rendering their phones almost useless.

There was hope Samsung had turned a corner in repairability, but the Galaxy S21 Ultra is a step backwards

what is the point in the 2mp macro shooter, surely on a budget phone it's just better to not include, the extra expense is not worth it as who is going to be pleased with 2mp shots

I too wouldn't mind a pop up camera, I hardly ever use the selfie camera so it be nicer to be tucked away.

However as a Pixel 4XL user, I have to stick with a huge forehead with a few cameras instead :/

(Well worth it though, pixels are just the best)

Windows 10 May 2019 Update thwarted by obscure tech known as 'external storage'

Europe's home PC buyers reach for their collective smartphone, sigh: We don't need a new desktop. This is a computer, right?

MarkElmes

The thing is, even a 13 year old Core2Duo or Core2Quad machine will happily run Windows 10, Office, Chrome and browse the internet. Put an SSD in said machine and they'll be perfectly usable. Heck, add an old and cheap Nvidia 750Ti and you'll be able to play most modern games.

It's easier than ever to keep old machines chugging along, so there's even less reason for poeple to upgrade when Windows 10 upgrade was free and they use their phones/tablets for most other things.

I'm sure the PC Hardware market is buzzing along as well as ever!

Google readies Pixel for the masses, but are the masses ready for Pixel?

MarkElmes

I for one love my Pixel 2 XL, it's an excellent phone. I've owned plenty of Samsungs and HTC's in the past, the last being the Samsung S8+, which was reviewed as having much better hardware, I actually prefer the Pixel 2's hardware. The screen isn't as bad as everyone made out apart from issues with blackness levels at low brightness. I can't go back to any other manufacturer after enjoying the cruft free android software, I always spent ages making any other phone like a Pixel because of their terrible modifications, I'd never want to touch a Huwaei with the quality of software and all their bloat... The speakers are great, the camera is excellent and the phone performs well at all times.

Excuse me, sir. You can't store your things there. Those 7 gigabytes are reserved for Windows 10

MarkElmes

Re: I think I can spare 7Gb out of the 8Tb I'm using for storage at the moment.

Damn an 8tb primary drive must be slow compared to an SSD!

Clap, damn you, clap! Samsung's Bixby 2.0 AI reveal is met with apathy

Re: Samsung has not been satisfied with making the best Android phones

I wouldn't buy another Samsung - their version of Android is aweful.

Just picked up a Pixel 2 XL which has the same specs as the Galaxy s8+ I had, and it's like night and day - the samsung constantly lags and has lots of stutter, the pixel, restored from the same backup, is as smooth as butter.

For all the excitement, Pie may be Android's most minimal makeover yet – thankfully

Re: XP had major problems, it was only until SP2 when it became the gold standard

You could modify windows 10 to your requirements and add in the old xp games and remove the windows store and apps. You can even get rid of the metro tiles with classic start. You could build a custom install of that and there you go.

A pretty and helpful user interface? Nahhh. Is that really you, Samsung?

MarkElmes

Just installed this on my S8+ on Oreo, that new task switcher is rubbish and a horrible UI. It's a bad copy of iOS task switcher, or the task switcher on Android P - but it's slow and still shows the app open underneath the task switcher and switching to an app is just poorly executed too.

Dual-screen laptops debut at Asus' Computex chat

MarkElmes

I would avoid this if it's anything like Asus last attempt to make a dual screen laptop - I had the ASUS Taichi 13 laptop with 2 full hd screens and it was a fantastic laptop but ASUS dropped support for it after a year so it had no driver updates from Windows 8.1 and was a bitch to get running properly on Windows 10 without any official drivers. Great laptop but ASUS killed it themselves and I won't be getting another ASUS laptop after that.

Microsoft Surface Book 2: Electric Boogaloo. Bigger, badder, better

MarkElmes

I've got the Surface Book 1 with performance base and I love it - by far the best laptop I've used. Shame I can't afford to upgrade to the new one as the bump in GPU power would be appreciated!

Windows 10 Hello face recognition can be fooled with photos

MarkElmes

Well I have Windows Hello set up on my surface book and it's rapid and very useful - far quicker and more reliable recognition than my Samsung S8+. To be honest if someone has physical access to your machine then you can count it pwned anyway so I don't see the issue here.

Samsung Galaxy S8+: Seriously. What were they thinking?

Breaking 350 million: What's next for Windows 10?

MarkElmes

Re: What's next for Windows 10?

Me neither. Not sure if most of the users commenting here even use Windows 10. I think it's a very good OS, my personal favorite of the big 3 and much better than Windows 8 was.

I've been using it since day 1, and ran the previews too.

There are Ad's, but they're never obtrusive and can be turned off.

-The lock screen can show ads over the login picture, but they're text based, and are only activated with the Spotlight feature that shows a different bing image each day.

-The start menu will suggest apps to install underneath the Most Used section - it'll only show 1 app and doesn't really get in the way.

-Edge's new start page will show occasional ads advertising MS products - just change your home page to something else..

-Cortana uses Bing - until you change your default search engine to Google

No ad's in any apps, except News/Money/Health - where ad's are expected due to the news sources.
