A few years ago AMD were wiping the floor with their Opteron chips and then Intel stopped messing around and developed some better chips. IIRC Opteron's advantage finally ended completely with Nehlem's onboard memory controller.

On the other hand, if you (think) you know how to make Access databases, then knowing that you'd be waiting for 18 months for something you can knock up in a day or so would be very frustrating...

I've had to clear up the mess of scientists' crashed Access DBs before, I'm not seriously advocating the above, just empathising...

The only compelling reason I have to upgrade my 6 year old PC is that I'm out of PCI-E slots and SATA3 connections. At some point I'll get around to it, but until I need to plug something else in then I have no urgent reason to do it.

I've swapped all the discs and have a mirror for my photos so I can be reasonably confident I won't have to "test my backups" soon.
