US government reportedly ponders crimping China's use of RISC-V

j2f8j8j2fj

Preventing China from having access to RISC-V is likely a non-starter but it's not like they'll be able to do much with it. China has been using MIPs for years but is nowhere near competing with AMD/Intel.

TSMC expects customers to pay more for chips fabbed overseas

Sounds like a win for Intel now that they're getting into the contract fab business.

Uncle Sam snooping on US folks? Not without a warrant, lawmakers agree

Oh no! With all this infighting the government might be forced to respect citizens' privacy!

No 'decoupling' here: Apple, Samsung, and Qualcomm sing China's praises

Those defying international norms of moving away from China will pay for it with their stock values and intellectual property.

Economy over security. I'm sure that'll work out well for the UK...

EU politely asks if China could stop snaffling IP as precondition for doing business

j2f8j8j2fj

"Downvote as they are not stealing - this is part of a contract to do business in China."

Sure, and the US can just go declaring everyone's IP to be invalid and the property of the US. Don't be stupid.

'Year-long' delay to UK 5G if we spike Huawei deals, say telcos

"Not denying the truth of Snopes' treatment of the pencil story, but I find the positioning of Snopes as an authoritative reference point for the elimination of fake news to be somewhat disturbing. As I understand it Snopes is actually operated by just a couple of people with colourful personal lives. Don't understand why I should accept their "fakeness" verdicts unquestioned."

The pencil story is easy enough to figure out with critical thinking - flying debris is extremely dangerous in space, especially when it's conductive.

Huawei execs are CCP members and ZTE is actually part state-owned.

Re: No need to change the default settings! Erase all of WIN 10

"Many of us want to run all the latest games and / or an Office suite that actually works though so Windows 10 is then a requirement."

Things that run on Windows 7....

Other than running them elsewhere, vote with your money. Stop buying games until they release them for Linux. I absolutely will not buy any game that requires Windows 10. I don't care how good people insist the game might be, no game is worth installing Windows 10.

You know this net neutrality thing? Well, people really love it

Re: Critical Thinking

"Over the past decades, after de-regulation, all of the profit in the last mile has dried up, even for wireless."

Nope, try talking to a rural ISP. There's money to be made. The reason you don't see more small ISPs around cities is that cable companies are allowed to throw thousands of frivolous lawsuits at them (which unless the representative from the small ISP shows up in court, it's a default ruling against).

"At least I can sue AT&T, Verizon, or Comcast for breach of contract"

You can sue all you like, the contracts have a clause that allows them to change the contract at any time. You'll end up wasting money and very likely be targeted for your stupidity.

Better yet, print it and mail it. Flood the FCC with snail mail. (Since Pai has his head too far up his ass to understand that Americans are sending comments, not bots.)

Re: First world problem

The repetitive parts of IT are the entry level jobs. Without those jobs you end up with a catch-22. (Need experience to get the job but need the job to get experience)

On top of that, many of the jobs being outsourced are developer positions. Development jobs would traditionally be the top end of the technical side of IT, something you had worked your way into. By that point you knew how everything worked on a lower level and were better equipped to build on it. Sure there are tedious tasks such as code maintenance but ideally you would build tools to automate much of it.

Unfortunately very few Linux developers care about multimedia. Aside from building render farms you're SOL on that front unless you're ready to start building multimedia editing applications yourself.

Re: Silicon Valley

There's a ludicrously large wage gap in SV. You have a handful of developers working for facebook making $200k+/yr and then a bunch of people elsewhere making $80k/yr or less. The H1B employees aren't the ones making 6 figures (but they are the most numerous).

GoDaddy CEO says US is 'tech illiterate' (so, yeah, don't shut off that cheap H-1B supply)

Re: It's not about pay

The current minimum pay for H1-B is $65,000. That's below the average pay for a citizen counterpart in IT. You're right on the hours though, they get paid less and work twice the hours effectively more than halving their hourly. (For anyone curious that comes out to $15.62/hr)

Latest Intel, AMD chips will only run Windows 10 ... and Linux, BSD, OS X

j2f8j8j2fj

Virtualize

Just run the older version of Windows on top of KVM. Problem solved. Considering many new Intel chips come with an IGP you can pass a cheap gpu through. Of course with any luck Virgil3d will mature and one can use that instead.

Quick as a flash: ATTO joins 32Gbit/s Fibre Channel bandwagon

j2f8j8j2fj

Re: 32Gb or GB?

Assuming 8b/10b encoding

(32gbit/8)*(8/10)=3.2GB/s or 3,200MB/s

If it's using 64b/66b the speed comes to approx 3.88GB/s.

j2f8j8j2fj

Fiberchannel has lost, ethernet is up to 100gbps if an organization can afford it. For latency, Infiniband is the better choice.
