Sorry we called you a fatty, say Kiwi spies to Kim 'Slim Jim' Dotcom

thomas k.

C'mon, Reg

Sure, Kim is a dick. He's also grossly, if not morbidly, obese and while it's ok to acknowledge that fact, making snarky comments on his size really makes you no better than the SIS. Grow up.

Sony sees the cold light of optical archives, buys ex-Facebooker's upstart

thomas k.

Re: Robotics

"Rather than have to retrieve a disk and return it to a drive, it would make sense to have a drive shaft and optics on the arm that would otherwise retrieve the disk in the first place."

I was thinking the same thing. The one immediate drawback of this approach I could see was that the arm mechanism would be much larger than a simple grappling arm (to retrieve/return discs) so the discs would have to be spaced much further apart, thus limiting the number you could cram in the box.

Verizon: fibre is MUCH cheaper than copper, we're going all-FTTP

thomas k.

I'm confused

I thought Verizon had stopped it's fiber build out years ago in order to push people into using more expensive cellular wireless. Are they now saying they're going to start building again, that once they've sold off their copper (as they've announced) they'll replace it with fiber?

Every Verizon employee I've badgered over the years has maintained that Verizon will never bring fiber to my city.

Re: And therein lies the problem ...

And, after a little eugoogling, I learned that the app downloads in the Play Store info *are* compressed and expand on installation, sometimes as much as 80% from the size shown on the Store description.

Now it all makes sense.

Would certainly be helpful if Google listed both the download and actual installation size in the descriptions

thomas k.

Re: And therein lies the problem ...

As a new owner of an LG Tribute, I'm certainly tempted to root this thing.

Of the 4GB internal memory, ~1.3GB is available to me. Fair enough, except that just updating all the Google apps drops that to ~750MB, which I can't figure out as the updates themselves - 5MB here, 10 there, 35 here - don't add up to 500+ MB. Even skipping those Google updates, I'm down to 1.15 just from the Virgin Mobile update and installing 7 apps. Grrrr.

Other than that, I like the Tribute.

Apple Watch shipments: Pick a number, double it. Hey, it worked for them

Verizon FLICKS FINGER at Netflix with skinny à la carte-style TV package for fibre munchers

thomas k.

How can this be competing with Netflix?

Netflix shows movies, some episodic shows it produces itself, and back seasons of some TV shows, not current TV shows. It would seem Verizon's plan would put them more in competition with Hulu.

And since it's only aimed at FIOS users, it's going to have a very limited market, indeed.
