What are the best VPN for UK 2016?

Before you even start looking for the best VPN to suit your needs, you should consider if it is a Virtual Private Network service that you actually require. The term VPN is today frequently bandied around as a means to geolocate oneself elsewhere, usually to counter businesses that restrict their online services to users from within a particular region.

Many people use such countermeasures in order to enjoy the BBC’s iPlayer streaming services while outside the UK; or to make use of the expanded catalogue of film and television offered by US Netflix, in contrast to the more limited selection in the UK.

Apple Renew / Trade-in Scheme Seems slow - Anyone else used it?

Re: Apple Renew / Trade-in Scheme Seems slow - Anyone else used it?

Apple isn’t the first company to offer trade-ins for old gear. Amazon, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Verizon all offer either store credit or cold hard cash for your retired gear. But with new iPhones just around the corner, it’s as good a time as any for the company to roll out an in-store trade-in program.

Here’s what Apple told Wired via email about the iPhone Reuse and Recycling Program:

“iPhones hold great value. So, Apple Retail Stores are launching a new program to assist customers who wish to bring in their previous-generation iPhone for reuse or recycling. In addition to helping support the environment, customers will be able to receive a credit for their returned phone that they can use toward the purchase of a new iPhone.”

Screen flickering/Explorer crashing on Windows 10? (fix)

We've looked at many of the problems that you might experience after upgrading to Windows 10 -- from issues with audio to bothersome browsers. Some users are having problems with the explorer.exe process crashing and an annoying screen flicker. Three particular applications -- Norton Antivirus, iCloud, or IDT Audio -- have been cited as culprits, and Microsoft and Symantec have solutions.

There's no need to go as far as uninstalling Windows 10, but Microsoft does suggest that you restart your computer in Safe Mode and uninstall any of the aforementioned programs. Of course, Symantec would much rather than you continued to use Norton Antivirus, so the company has its own fix for the problem.

Restart Windows in Safe Mode.

Run Symantec's special fixing tool as an Administrator.

Restart Windows as normal.

Use the dedicated Norton Remove and Reinstall tool to uninstall the AV software and then reinstall it.

Asset Management for a small Media Team

Asset Management for a small Media Team

Been using WebDAM for a couple of years now and love it. Helped us consolidate our product and beauty photography and other marketing assets into a single place and saved a ton of money and time. Previously, we had multiple agencies and marketing staff across multiple global business units continually looking for photos. Agency requests were expensive and time consuming, often for the same images. Now everyone can get to the same repository for the latest product and beauty shots. No more need for multiple copies all over the organization and we can see at a glance all the latest photos. Great search engine too.

Pros:

Very cost effective and scalable. Easy to use interface on both front end and back end, powerful meta tagging and search. Like the ability to set up permissions and give discrete access to certain assets for different groups and users. Also ability to download smaller size JPGs from high res source images. Company is actively improving their system and recent changes are making it easier to use and more powerful.

Cons:

Began as an image management tool so the workflow is still geared toward images. Not using it for managing all our digital source files (i.e. InDesign source with links). We are beginning to put video files in our WebDAM system, but there's still some work to be done on video management.

Not really a pro or con, but setting up all the proper meta data is a major task if you haven't already done so. But once you do get all your tagging and taxonomy in place, the system gets even more powerful.

Windows 10 (Unhappy) Anniversary Freezes Computers

Windows 10 (Unhappy) Anniversary Freezes Computers

In case you’re one of the unhappy Windows 10 users who has discovered that the system freezes after performing the Anniversary Update, we’ve got a partially good news for you: Microsoft issued a fix, but it’s only temporary.

Microsoft has received a small number of reports of Windows 10 freezing after installing the Anniversary Update on systems with the operating system stored on a solid-state drive (SSD) and apps and data stored on a separate drive. This issue does not occur when starting Windows 10 in Safe Mode,” Microsoft said on its support forum.

Fixing the problem is simple: rolling back to an older but stable Windows 10 version. You might not like it, but it’s the way to go.

Until a final fix is available, Microsoft has for affected users two ways of downgrading the operating system.

If they’ve installed the Anniversary Update less than 10 days ago, they’ll be able to sign into Windows 10 using Safe Mode and then move apps and data to the same drive as the operating system. After that, they can revert back to the previous version of Windows running on the machine

Anyone dealt with icann before?

Eminently reasonable, and therefore impossible for icann.

Back to OP - I haven't gone into how much regulation icann has over delegated names; I would've thought it was ultimately .uk that had control. That's how it should be imo.

All ICANN-accredited registrars follow a uniform dispute resolution policy. Under that policy, disputes over entitlement to a domain-name registration are ordinarily resolved by court litigation between the parties claiming rights to the registration. Once the court rules on who is entitled to the registration, the registrar will implement that ruling. In disputes arising from registrations allegedly made abusively (such as "cyber-squatting" and ?cyber-piracy"), the uniform policy provides an expedited administrative procedure to allow the dispute to be resolved without the cost and delays often encountered in court litigation. In these cases, you can invoke the administrative procedure by filing a complaint with one of the dispute-resolution service providers.

Fixing Dell Storage

How should Dell storage be fixed so it delivers on its promise?

Of course, some obstacles are legitimate, but organizations tend to accept “no” too quickly. The regulatory obstacles are not as big as they seem, and the pace of change in technology means the architectural ones aren’t either. The best way to guarantee you get no benefits from the cloud is to block the programs that promote its adoption.

I’ve come a long way from being a cloud skeptic myself. While I still maintain that dynamic provisioning and smarter application architecture are the true innovations of what we call “the cloud,” arguing the semantics is beside the point. What I do believe is that cloud solutions do a better job of delivering on the promise of outsourcing than outsourcing itself. Deploying an up-to-date, standardized, flexible, cost-effective, constantly improved and shared asset on behalf of corporations has been outsourcing’s pitch from the beginning. But it took this thing we now call the cloud to deliver on that promise, even though, as they say, results may vary.

Win 10 "upgade" complete reinstall

Win 10 "upgade" complete reinstall

Microsoft’s Windows 10 offer was one of the most unprecedented offers Microsoft made in the past few years. Typically, Microsoft would offer Windows updates to users via servicing packs and patch updates for free for the lifetime of the OS, then give consumers the opportunity to pay for updates to the new OS. Of course, most consumers typically stuck to the old version of the OS with updates only happening when people got new PCs/Tablets when their old one broke.

With Microsoft’s Windows 10 update, all that’s changed. Now the new update is being offered for free – not “free” – but free to users on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices. Over 350 million have already upgraded to Windows 10 and use it daily, so Microsoft’s off to a good start. With the free upgrade period coming to a close, some users of Microsoft’s older OS may be unsure of what to do. Whether to update now, or hang on to their old tried and true OS.

Typically people who are against upgrading to Windows 10 often cite this as a reason not to update. Some believe that “apps” are useless and should be confined to the realm of the smartphone or tablet. After all, the browser can do everything for you, with little or no fuss. That may be true to some extent, but Universal Windows apps offer value for users who choose to use them. I watch my YouTube Videos ad free with MyTube and TubeCast. I enjoy reading articles on the train offline with Poki – a pocket client. I listen to music with Groove Music and I write my articles in Flatnotes before pasting them into WordPress. Apps aren’t just useless toys, they can be tools to help you get through your day with as little fuss as possible.

Panda Antivirus bricking PCs!

Panda Antivirus bricking PCs!

Panda Security has issued an official advisory concerning the update glitch and has confirmed that a tool to remedy the problem is in the works. So far no ETA has been given on the fix. In the meantime, Panda security has advised customers NOT to reboot their computers, regardless of what may be happening, as it will most likely lead to a bricked PC.

In addition the company has shared on Twitter that users should not attempt to uninstall Panda anti-virus or else they will be unable to recover any files lost due to the update glitch.

Recovery of pictures from a hard disc - data recovery firm recommendations

Data recovery firms may be will cost you high and will be time consuming too. There are heaps of data recovery software available online who claim that they can easily recover their data on fast pace of time depending upon few factors such as the size of your hard drive, number of bad sectors it has, etc. Other than recuva, you can enjoy various data recovery tools such as Stellar phoenix, Pandora, Easeus, etc.

Hope they will work for you.

Canonical to halt its Ubuntu One file service

jordandevin

Our strategic priority for Ubuntu is making the best converged operating system for phones, tablets, desktops and more. In fact, our user experience, developer tools for apps and scopes, and commercial relationships have been constructed specifically to highlight third party content and services (as opposed to our own); this is one of our many differentiators from our competitors. Additionally, the free storage wars aren’t a sustainable place for us to be, particularly with other services now regularly offering 25GB-50GB free storage. If we offer a service, we want it to compete on a global scale, and for Ubuntu One to continue to do that would require more investment than we are willing to make. We choose instead to invest in making the absolute best, open platform and to highlight the best of our partners’ services and content.

Which flash array vendor will be bought & by who?

All-flash storage arrays have pitted longtime storage vendors against pesky startups. This guide will help you compare flash storage products and decide if an all-flash array is right for you.

All-flash storage arrays may differ on capacity, drive type, networking options and storage-savings features, but the one thing they all do is improve performance.

The 15 flash storage product lines profiled in TechTarget's all-flash array guide claim maximum read IOPS ranging from 200,000 to 9 million, peak read throughput from 2.4 GBps to 46 GBps, and read latencies from 50 microseconds to 1 millisecond.

Storage Memory

Storage Memory

Memory is the term given to the structures and processes involved in the storage and subsequent retrieval of information.

Memory is essential to all our lives. Without a memory of the past we cannot operate in the present or think about the future. We would not be able to remember what we did yesterday, what we have done today or what we plan to do tomorrow. Without memory we could not learn anything.

Memory is involved in processing vast amounts of information. This information takes many different forms, e.g. images, sounds or meaning.

HD and SSD Prices not declining - why ?

Sales of hard disk drives have been on the decline this year because of slow demand for personal computers and tough competition from solid-state drives. While Seagate Technology and Western Digital Corp. hope that demand of HDDs will pick up in the coming quarters, a market analyst claims that it will decline again. Moreover, in the long-term, HDD makers will have to lower the price of their products because of competition.

Total available market of hard disk drives dropped to 125 million units in Q1 2015 and to 111 million units in Q2 2015, according to estimates by Seagate and Western Digital. By contrast, despite of dropping demand for PCs, sales of SSDs for client PCs in Q1 2015 grew by 3.5 per cent quarter-over-quarter, according to TrendFocus. Sales of all SSDs in the second quarter of 2015 increased by 2.9 per cent QoQ and totaled 23.859 million units.
