If tsoHost is lecturing us on sleep hygiene, Brit outfit really does have hosting back to front

OliP

Managed to move my last inherited customer away from tso before this started affecting things seriously.

I rate them about as high as Heart Internet, both seem completely out of their depths.

I moved two sites onto SiteGround as a test last year and had zero problems, support staff are technically capable and respond quickly.

Also free SSL with Lets Encrypt. Only a wordpress site but handles a decent amount of traffic and the dashboard is always snappy.

Compared to tso where load times for the same code were +10s

Captec saps tech from Aleutia to put its tiny PCs back to work

OliP

Not the first, sadly.

I used to buy similarly small, fanless machines from Logic Supply - with 3x Ethernet Ports in for home / smb firewalls - they keep eol'ing them.

these wouldve been great - but they never came up in a google search when looking for small form factor pcs - i wonder why? they seem to have been in business when i was looking.

More cheap fanless PCs please!

this one hit me hard, so unexpected.

Their music hit me when i was around 7 or 8 (so defo no need for drugs to appreciate the genius behind it) and to this day it brings a smile whenever i hear any of it.

Just listening to Experience through and each intro raises the hairs on the back of my neck, the drums on charlie are really something else.

Set the stage for and "legitimised" rave music the world over.

Heart Internet stops beating, starts Monday with big portion of FAIL

OliP

Heart dont deserve your business, however small you are

They are the ultimate buy it in, whack 30% on it and ship it type company.

I spent 2 weeks trying to explain to them why they were installing drupal and wordpress incorrectly from their scripted platform (which they bought in and dont understand) - using the wrong database settings - even with logs, screenshots and live test sites they couldn't get their heads around what i was explaining.

Ended up with a full refund 3 weeks into a years renewed contract.

Don't go near them....

Brexit campaigner AggregateIQ challenges UK's first GDPR notice

from what i can see the ICO's problem isn't a lack of balls, its a lack of staff.

Cryptography is the Bombe: Britain's Enigma-cracker on display in new home

OliP

i was up there a few weeks ago, the first day the bombe was on show to the public, completely by chance.

its a great day out, went for the guided tour of the full museum and was the only one on the tour so got huge value out of it.

highly reccomend it to anyone with even the passing glimpse of an interest in technology and its history - so much more than just the colossus and enigma stories, truly impressive to see most of it still working.

something pleasingly english about a museum with a Cray super-computer next to a Crazy Taxi arcade machine

You won't believe this: Nokia soars back into phone-flinger top 3

OliP

As much as i loved my old nokias, i'm not sure i recognize any of what i loved in these new stock android devices. and beyond the name, how much of the old guard is left?

I'll be starting to look for replacements for my s7 edge in a month or two, ideally want to go for something mid-market this time, but not sure i'd place much love or trust in nokia over any other android purveyor tbh.

Those days are long gone.

Virgin Media customers complain of outages across UK

OliP

Touch wood i live in a fairly under-subscribed area of South East London - so get the speed i pay for, but i have friends who regularly have issues.

In my experience its usually the box falling over due to a bad firmware upgrade but i only use the superhub as a modem.

a friend who has just moved out of london has been waiting 6 months for virgin to dig up 7ft of road to install his line - the excuses are amazing. each time the council has turned up to oversea the digging up of the road - which never seems to happen. When it finally got dug up and another engineer sent days later to do the install - it failed with the comment "no cable". good works guys.

The Atari retro games box is real… sort of

OliP

Re: PC technology?

yep - this is the only option that makes any sense.

what build goes on the thing though, do they have sufficient tech expertise to put something together that works and doesn't completely suck.

3 months? good luck.

surely it should already be in manufacture?

Insert coin: Atari retro console is coming back

OliP

Kodi isnt far away from supporting game emulators and roms - so interesting to see who makes it to market first. i'd put my money on the kodi integration being a runaway success being that everyone already has it installed and won't need to go spend the $60 or whatever atari want to charge.

seems they are going for the hollywood model of just live off the great ideas of the past.

What is this bullsh*t, Google? Nexus phones starved of security fixes after just three years

OliP

to be fair - the longest ive ever run a device was 3 years and by that point it was so out-dated it was barely usable. this is definetly a strike against android when viewed against the iphone, but in real life - this doesnt affect me and i wonder how many others it really gets.

most smart-phones are updated beyond their hardware capability by year 3 anyway - and if you dont install the update, well your in the same boat re security anyway

Is this a solution to Trump signing away your digital privacy? We give Invizbox Go a go

OliP

It does sort of help in this instance against the ISPs selling your data to anyone offering the cash, but any other protection is surely mitigated by the fact its routing your entire connection through it? Logins and all, so the feds can just get what they want regardless.

I can easily believe the investment of breaking vpn or ssl sessions would be tiny compared to the profits they'd make here however.

OliP

Full 4g reception in a particular spot in my garden, 1 bar of Edge with no usable net connectivity in the house and about half a mile out the front door. No internet from when i get on a train at Brixton til i get home most nights.

This is in South-East London.

Train operator doesnt offer wifi either, so usually a peaceful journey home (apart from the warfare required to actually get on a train)

Smart meter benefits even crappier than originally thought

OliP

i popped round last night and had a look at what had gone on.

as far as i can tell - he connected his mobile phone to the wifi, not the smart meter.

he may have done this as the house has little to no mobile signal - would he have had to register the box back with head office via an app / internet connection ?

Either way - i've lodged a complaint with their energy provider.

Apparently the documentation is to follow in the post rather than being left by the engineer.

All sounds very dodgy, agreed. But difficult to know how much is accurate from the mother and how much she just doesnt want to tell me.

OliP

"someone" told my mother that she HAD to have one installed as she's now of pension age.

"someone" arrived yesterday to install it - and told her it was going to save her £100 a year from this year!!

the engineer demanded the wifi password during the install, again mother has no idea why - no explanation offered and no documentation left with her for me to go over after the fact.

If i cut it off from the wifi - what happens?

im on my first few weeks of using android pay, as natwest really dragged their heals on implementation. I find its slowest on the rail network. Its failed once so far, but i got a free train ride out of it - and the ticket inspectors so far have had no idea how to check if i have a ticket or not - so im quids in.

I find it really hit and miss as to knowing if it'll work or not though - there is next to no advertising at the point of sale to say its supported, but often it works fine.

a complete clusterfuck of a roll out considering my S3 had the tech to support this, but my S7 is the first where it actually worked. Mostly down to my bank though. Luddites.

Forgive me, father, for I have used an ad-blocker on news websites...

OliP

dont believe this poll for a second.

i dont know anyone using an adblocker who whitelists anyone...

i've blocked any site that says i have to disable the blocker in order to read. None of them have taken any steps to deal with the malware via advertising issue, and none of them have remotely optimised their site for reading on mobile devices.

have you ever asked for these clauses to be removed?

i was put in a similar position once, they were first shocked i didnt just sign the contract...

i asked for a clause about inventions to be removed as it was just a land grab on anything i might have made outside of work - they claim they didnt know the clause was in there and removed it.

Re: How many nursery schools...

or you outsource it...

It just takes the manager to take it seriously. Sadly like many other industries the education sector is run on next to no budget and people with the skills to make decent suggestions are often over-ruled.

I used to support a handful of schools, nurseries etc from a MSP in east london, we knew their budget was limited so offered a discount but treated them like any other corporate when it came to their data. They may have gotten a slower response time but they could live with that.

There is always a way to do IT properly - you just need to plan it properly, and if you don't understand it listen to someone who does.

Londoner jailed after refusing to unlock his mobile phones

BT internet outage was our fault, says Equinix

OliP

whilst this might well be down to a badly configured data center (highly possible)

we should also bare in mind the crazy amount of construction going on in the local area.

the whole situation is a mess however - we get a few events a year that show how fragile it all is, most hidden from public view but when you're monitoring over 100,000 pc's on various networks all over the UK you get a good idea when "one bad router" ends up affecting networks in a (geographic) quarter of the country.

where i work we saw no outage, only those working from home (on crappy residential broadband) were intermittently unable to join lync meetings. redundancy IS possible, as long as you're willing to pay for it.

AWS availability zones appear to have kept the site up as well, no dip in traffic that we can see.
