Managed to move my last inherited customer away from tso before this started affecting things seriously.

I rate them about as high as Heart Internet, both seem completely out of their depths.

I moved two sites onto SiteGround as a test last year and had zero problems, support staff are technically capable and respond quickly.

Also free SSL with Lets Encrypt. Only a wordpress site but handles a decent amount of traffic and the dashboard is always snappy.

Compared to tso where load times for the same code were +10s

I used to buy similarly small, fanless machines from Logic Supply - with 3x Ethernet Ports in for home / smb firewalls - they keep eol'ing them.

these wouldve been great - but they never came up in a google search when looking for small form factor pcs - i wonder why? they seem to have been in business when i was looking.

They are the ultimate buy it in, whack 30% on it and ship it type company.

I spent 2 weeks trying to explain to them why they were installing drupal and wordpress incorrectly from their scripted platform (which they bought in and dont understand) - using the wrong database settings - even with logs, screenshots and live test sites they couldn't get their heads around what i was explaining.

Ended up with a full refund 3 weeks into a years renewed contract.

i was up there a few weeks ago, the first day the bombe was on show to the public, completely by chance.

its a great day out, went for the guided tour of the full museum and was the only one on the tour so got huge value out of it.

highly reccomend it to anyone with even the passing glimpse of an interest in technology and its history - so much more than just the colossus and enigma stories, truly impressive to see most of it still working.

As much as i loved my old nokias, i'm not sure i recognize any of what i loved in these new stock android devices. and beyond the name, how much of the old guard is left?

I'll be starting to look for replacements for my s7 edge in a month or two, ideally want to go for something mid-market this time, but not sure i'd place much love or trust in nokia over any other android purveyor tbh.

Touch wood i live in a fairly under-subscribed area of South East London - so get the speed i pay for, but i have friends who regularly have issues.

In my experience its usually the box falling over due to a bad firmware upgrade but i only use the superhub as a modem.

a friend who has just moved out of london has been waiting 6 months for virgin to dig up 7ft of road to install his line - the excuses are amazing. each time the council has turned up to oversea the digging up of the road - which never seems to happen. When it finally got dug up and another engineer sent days later to do the install - it failed with the comment "no cable". good works guys.

recently seen that MiLight aka LimitlessLED now has something like 10-15 different protocols for talking to each of their products via two hubs. 3rd party devs are just giving up supporting it all.

Kodi isnt far away from supporting game emulators and roms - so interesting to see who makes it to market first. i'd put my money on the kodi integration being a runaway success being that everyone already has it installed and won't need to go spend the $60 or whatever atari want to charge.

seems they are going for the hollywood model of just live off the great ideas of the past.

to be fair - the longest ive ever run a device was 3 years and by that point it was so out-dated it was barely usable. this is definetly a strike against android when viewed against the iphone, but in real life - this doesnt affect me and i wonder how many others it really gets.

most smart-phones are updated beyond their hardware capability by year 3 anyway - and if you dont install the update, well your in the same boat re security anyway

InfluxDB + Grafana = Happiness

Recently embarked on a project to get our grafana dashboards displaying on kodi instances hanging all round the office. Looks great, alerts staff quickly to issues and allows us to dig into the same interface from the browser when something isnt right.

It does sort of help in this instance against the ISPs selling your data to anyone offering the cash, but any other protection is surely mitigated by the fact its routing your entire connection through it? Logins and all, so the feds can just get what they want regardless.

I can easily believe the investment of breaking vpn or ssl sessions would be tiny compared to the profits they'd make here however.

Full 4g reception in a particular spot in my garden, 1 bar of Edge with no usable net connectivity in the house and about half a mile out the front door. No internet from when i get on a train at Brixton til i get home most nights.

This is in South-East London.

Train operator doesnt offer wifi either, so usually a peaceful journey home (apart from the warfare required to actually get on a train)

Hopefully this won't hit coal-face engineers but management deserve a good kicking. Shocking company when I was with them a few years back.

im on my first few weeks of using android pay, as natwest really dragged their heals on implementation. I find its slowest on the rail network. Its failed once so far, but i got a free train ride out of it - and the ticket inspectors so far have had no idea how to check if i have a ticket or not - so im quids in.

I find it really hit and miss as to knowing if it'll work or not though - there is next to no advertising at the point of sale to say its supported, but often it works fine.

a complete clusterfuck of a roll out considering my S3 had the tech to support this, but my S7 is the first where it actually worked. Mostly down to my bank though. Luddites.

where i work we saw no outage, only those working from home (on crappy residential broadband) were intermittently unable to join lync meetings. redundancy IS possible, as long as you're willing to pay for it.

AWS availability zones appear to have kept the site up as well, no dip in traffic that we can see.
