I have dozens of 5 1/4"from the mid 80's (Commodore 64) that still worked fine as of a couple years ago when I started pulling archive grade copies off of them.

I cannot recall what software I was using, (might have been from the Internet Archive) will have to dig it up as they had recommendations on superior 5 1/4 PC drives to use for better success rates...though my pair of 1541's still actually work as well so I could go old school and just use "Fast Hack'em II" for a backup.

Less luck with my 3 1/2" ones from the late 90's however.

I actually worked for a large organization that did DR failover between a couple of their main datacenters every year.

Every application team was opted in and had to produce a business case to be opted out, which was reviewed for progress the next year and escalated to management if they attempted to opt out a second time.

They were big on ITIL and CobIT frameworks, so as long as the rules were followed people were not reprimanded.

Security was mainly audited by the security team with recommendations being documented...if your area got hacked after not following recommendations the security team would work with you to remediate before you were hauled in front of the executives to explain yourself.

I guess I was spoiled there as I have not seen anything even close since.

They forgot to tell marketing that they cannot have the McRib and Shamrock Shake available on the menu at the same time or it will crash the system.

Maybe we will be lucky and they will restore it to a point where we can get the Mulan szechuan chicken nugget sauce again...

I consider it as a Redundant Inexpensive Array of Servers.

If one dies the machines go elsewhere (or can be restored elsewhere) in the array and I swap out the box, reinstall proxmox and join the cluster. It does not take very long to do that and enterprise class servers are generally pretty reliable...even old ones.

It is like a Backblaze strategy for VMs.

I do keep my storage separate on OmniOS boxes though.

I have not run into the AMD issue to date.

I use QubesOS for most of my web browsing now (though I still have a Windows box just for gaming only)

You can fire up one disposable VM , do your Amazon , fire up another to do your banking, fire up yet another to do general surfing.

None of them will share data with each other and when you close a VM's window, it is gone for good along with any cookies or downloads.

Its a bit of a different mind set but once you get used to how things work its very simple to operate.

There was a comedian that had a joke stating something like the following that I always found nearly relatable and quite funny.

I keep my work and home life completely separate: My coworkers don't know that I am married, and my wife doesn't know that I have a job.

I wish I could remember who it was. It may have been from the 60's or 70's.

I actually swapped one of my diesel truck batteries for an ultra capacitor.

I will spin the engine like a top at -40, the other battery just needs to provide at least 9v to the ECU.

This is almost what stop-start engines need.

Would Minitool work for this?

I am quite envious of these guys having a drop testing facility near their home.

I remember the fastest PC I have ever seen; it was a Pentium 90 at a store with Windows 3.1.

When you clicked on a program (from Microsoft Works), it was open before you finished pulling your finger off the mouse from the second click.

I have had a lot of current machines over the years, but that P90, with that operating system, it was fast.

They are so big you need a Buggy Whip on your "big" pickup truck so that they know you are there and don't inadvertently squish said pickup truck (and any occupants) into the ground and continue on their merry way, blissfully unaware of anything extraordinary occurring.

Being the paranoid type, I imagine them, or the police, having some pointed questions for you if any of those accounts happen to be hacked or commandeered by another unscrupulous administrator long after you have left.

ZFS is more of full stack RAID+file system toolset, where EXT4 is a file system that can be applied on top of a RAID or similar configuration.

I still use EXT4 on my Linux OS drives.

ZFS also has some facilities for preventing bit rot.

Been running Proxmox for years and its great for my needs. Yep, fanboy here!!

You can pretty much run it on any machine that Debian will run on.

One trick that may save you some grief if you are running your DNS as a guest on your cluster is to make sure that each Proxmox node has the other nodes in its Hosts file. ( I learned that the hard way when I shut down things for a move)

You can do that in the GUI very easily.

Thanks for sharing your Proxmox experience as I'm always curious if I have made a good choice or if there is something newer and better out there.

Promox does have a free dedicated backup solution in addition to the built in backup options, though I have only played with it about a year ago and have not really implemented it for any of my customers yet.

It seemed fairly functional, but I would need a lot more experience with it before really recommending it.

I actually migrated from VMWare (which I previously migrated to from Microsoft Virtual Server) to Promox when VMWare licensing became too onerous for smaller installations.

Actually losing access to backups for my lab without paying for Essentials was my reason for even looking at other options. Xen seemed ok but I found Proxmox more feature rich and easier to mange at the time.
