Top doctors slam Google for not backing up incredible claims of super-human cancer-spotting AI

Hstubbe

If it is as good as youtube's content censoring AI, i would be very wary of this.

Linus Torvalds banishes masters, slaves and blacklists from the Linux kernel, starting now

male/female

When will the electronics community finally catch on, and change the hetero-normative and sex-oriented classification of connectors as male and female. For one, it is offensive that only male/female mating is considered acceptable. In addition, the term mating itself refers to the act of having sex in order to reproduce. Won't somebody think of the children? Finally, the male/female distinction excludes a whole spectrum of sexual identification in between. Take the venerable din connecter. What is commonly referred to as the male din plug has properties of both masculanity as well as femininity.

Better late than never... Google Chrome to kill off 'tiny' number of mobile web ads that gobble battery, CPU power

I'll stick to firefox thanks

Yeah, I'll stick to firefox with ublock origin, thank you very much google. It's simply too little, too late.

Internet Society CEO: Most people don't care about the .org sell-off – and nothing short of a court order will stop it

Hstubbe

"Nothing about the sale would change or impact ISOC's mission, he argues, but it would provide it with the resources to do a lot more and provide a more stable and diversified source of income."

I guess he's going to need that diversified source of income. I, for one, will not renew my paid membership to these sell-outs.

Re: Arrogant

Don't worry, with systemd, linux is rapidly catching up with macos and windows in becoming unusable.

"Why would an SSD need to spy on users? Is anything safe?".

No.

IT isn't about odd concepts such as "safe" and "secure", it's about hoarding data (any data) and then finding ways to flog that data to the highest bidder. Even if you pay for a service (say office 365), your data is still being stored, analyzed and sold.

It's official: Deploying Facebook's 'Like' button on your website makes you a joint data slurper

Hstubbe

Re: No f in button?

"at the bottom of this article, in between the twitter button and the linkdim button, is a button with an f in it". There isn't for me. Looks like your browser is broken, did it somehow disable or uninstall ublock origin? You.should not surf the web unprotected, it exposes you to malware and your privacy to unscrupulous data hoarders.

Re: DoH is not all good

"Except, of course, that the settign to use DoH is off by default, so nobody is forcing anyone to use it."

Not yet at least, but they're planning on turning it on by default, instead of the current default. At least, that's what's reported at zdnet: https://www.zdnet.com/article/mozilla-no-plans-to-enable-dns-over-https-by-default-in-the-uk/

Hstubbe

DoH is not all good

I still don't get this DoH praise. DoH simply replaces a decentralized logging opportunity with a concentrated, centralized logging opportunity. Instead of hundreds if not thousands of ISP's being able to log your DNS lookups, we all send all our DNS lookups to one party (cloudflare in the instance of firefox). So cloudflare will be able to build a big database of the browsing behaviour of all firefox users that have DoH enabled.

So why is trusting a US company like cloudflare with that any better than trusting my local ISP? No thank you, I trust my ISP a bunch more than some NSA subsidiary.

I myself disabled DoH on all my devices that have firefox. I'd switch browsers because by forcing DoH upon users firefox has clearly abandoned their 'privacy first' goals, but there isn't a browser left that cares about users anymore. The only alternative is spy-by-default chrome/chromium (which of course will also force DoH for your own good soon).

DoH in itself is a nice idea, it's just that the implementation forces all DNS requests world-wide to go through one company which seems like a terribly bad idea to me.

How can these blokes, Vincent and Palmer, sleep at night? Surely they know they are lying through their teeth? I never used chrome, and never will. Google are evil, and the obvious lies and bullshit their employees spout just.confirm that they are a bunch of psychopaths who are only motivated by money. No ethical and honest petson would want to go public with incorrect and false statements like Vincent and Palmer do.

Hstubbe

Re: doubleclick lives in my

With dns-over-https, another one of those great google inventions, your dns is bypassed and sll dns requests are sent over an https tunnel directly to google. Not much your pihole is going to do about that. And even firefox promotes this (but with cloudflare instead of google).

PC version of Linux 4.19 lands with PC version of Linus Torvalds: Kernel handed back to creator

Hstubbe

So how many lines of code have all the obligatory commentards who denounce this code of conduct actually contributed? And how does that compare to the number of lines that Linus, Greg and the other maintainers behind this coc have contributed? I'm inclined to think that if the kernel maintainers deem it necessary to curtail abusive behaviour, that they have good reason to do so.

Re: "the system has a more modern and 'flatter' look"

For me, i don't consider kde an option ever because it wastes so much resources on eye candy, bogging down my system. In a vm kde is unusable too becsuse it is so bloated.

Then again, I don't use gnome either. First thing I do is install xmonad, a non-decorated tiling window manager. I come to my computer to do stuff, not to get dazzled by eye-candy or getting rsi endlessly arranging windows with a mouse.

Multi-monitor support also sucks for both kde and gnome.

Re: Pointless?

"I think the point is that in a large organisation, particularly admin type departments, which are often he majority, they all have the same build.".

I remember working for such a shop once. They treated the sw dev department the same. "Hey, if any can run outlook on it surely you can develop your highly specialized embedded software on it". The machine was good enough for (barely, when the anti-virus, policy enforcing crap and surveillance software wasn't maxing out the cpu) writing my resignation letter.

Hstubbe

Re: Pointless?

Re: It's not "browsing" anymore..

And it would be correct to mark them as insecure. Whether that's convenient is another matter, but sending your router password unencrypted over the air is indeed considered insecure.

Re: pardon, me ignorant

Scp or sftp, i'm sure there's android clients for those. But you can continue to use the legacy and insecure (your password is sent over the wire unencrypted, as are sll your files) ftp, this article only says that websites that pull, let's say, their images in over ftp (instead of http/https which is used by 99.9999999999999999999999999% of the sites) are going to break. This is independent of whether those images have been uploaded over ftp or not.
