1Password has none, KeePass has none... So why are there seven embedded trackers in the LastPass Android app?

richardalm

Important article (about open source)

KeePass and its many forks -- KeePass2Android in particular -- are the real McCoys. Hopefully this article helps get that message across at a quicker pace. And if KeePass source code is ever abused here's hoping El Reg is on the case like flies on LastPass.

And btw Mr. Cook -- pay your effing taxes!

My wife is shopping for a new tablet and was considering an iPad. It would have been her first Apple gadget. But after bringing this tale of cheap corporate bullyism to her attention, deciding became much easier. The hardware and software simply aren't special enough for soul selling and the company's culture is rotten to its core. What else is there to know?

Downloaded CCleaner lately? Oo, awks... it was stuffed with malware

Re: Meanwhile ...

I might put CCleaner on new builds and upgrades for a single tool-- the one for editing Windows start up -- which is much easier and safer than coaching somebody over the phone with regedit. Other than that, CCleaner doesn't keep Windows any cleaner than late model Windows and browsers do.

Most Windows users who rely on apps like CCleaner are indeed non-techies who have little knowledge of NTFS and how awesome it can be (when left to its own devices). But there's nothing dubious about hobbiests using a power tool or two. It's too bad, though, about their ignorant down-votes here at El Reg if the software is deemed less useful than it was for Windows 95. Aggresssive down- or up-voting too often has the odor of representatives on a mission.

Assholes are too expensive

A more poetic treatment (under my supervision) would have been to reassign Damore to Google Day Care and halve his pay. (On slow days he'd be my ping pong ball boy and his days would be long.) But that's just my opinion, man.

Google wasn't too reactionary if they thought about Damore's bullshit longer than five minutes. Anybody who's lived longer than 30 years understands that ignorant assholes add higher costs to everything. Evidently, assholes in Silicon Valley are a dime per dozen so cost adjustments can always be justified one way or another.

Fancy that! Google was keen on 'draining the swamp' in 2013

This article is the first of its kind I'm aware of that pairs the words "ad networks" and "fake news" in the same sentence. Finally.

We're getting warmer

"More than ever, a clickbait world (that is itself riddled with ad fraud)..."

Flip on the ad blocker, see less fake news. Can't talk about one without talking about the other. Unless you're a publisher.
