Intel hands first Optane DIMM to Google, where it'll collect dust until a supporting CPU arrives

The CPUs surely exist...

General availability just means when you can get them. Obviously Intel makes parts available to strategic partners ahead of that.

Re: We are still waiting for the 'real' product

I think the P4800X is the 3DXP Intel currently has available for servers: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/memory-storage/solid-state-drives/data-center-ssds/optane-dc-p4800x-series.html?wapkw=p4800x

The DIMM version doesn't appear to be available, though.

Re: Wrong comparison

Regarding "instant on", imagine the power savings for a smart phone if it had such a feature. I suspect we're a ways out from seeing this trickle into such client devices, though.

Wrong comparison

While 3DXP is more expensive than 3D NAND, it's an order of magnitude cheaper than the DRAM that it's actually aimed at replacing.

Read the spec...

Sounds like this company didn't read, particularly the sections on subsystems, shared namespaces and reservations.

apples and oranges

Obviously the Samsung PM1725a and Intel P3608 are using PCIe x8 lanes. The P4800X is surely PCIe x4, and it practically saturates the bus capabilities at queue depths that NAND barely starts to ramp.

I've lots of storage industry experience and came to the opposite conclusion. A company that doesn't have a strong presence in or around Boulder Colorado is more limited than ones that do.
