Ransomware payment ban: Wrong idea at the wrong time

Steven Guenther

Serious crimes deserve serious punishment

If you mess up critical systems, and cause serious harm or death, you can get the death penalty.

Allow for extra national rendition for these criminals. Hire Blackwater to dice them up.

Kill a few and others will get the message. "Dyin ain't no way to make a livin"

Dune back story

You missed part of the back story in the Dune books is the Butlerian Jihad, where all machines that think like humas have been banned.

A tale of 2 casino ransomware attacks: One paid out, one did not

Steven Guenther

Like horse thieves

In the old West, horses were a life necessity. Stealing one was a hanging offense, well above the punishment for stealing similar value. Computer systems are the lifeblood of the modern world. Shoot on sight would be a reasonable way to deal with the Mitnicks of the world. Pay Blackwater another $100 million to find and erase the hackers. Start finding these guys hanging from a bridge with their genitals in their mouths. It is the lack of IRL consequences that keep them coming back. Using "Social Engineering" makes the whole world a colder, less helpful place.

RIP Kevin Mitnick: Former most-wanted hacker dies at 59

Steven Guenther

not a good hacker

He was not that great of a computer hacker. He was a liar and thief who preyed upon those who tried to be helpful.

He made the world a colder place where people are afraid to help others.

Man sues OpenAI claiming ChatGPT 'hallucination' said he embezzled money

Whose name is on the Byline?

Was ChatGPT going to get the money or the journalist? The one getting the money is who is at fault.

Maybe sue the journalist, let them sue ChatGPT.

similar and worse

We had a "automated" server facility, no need for humans to be in the room.

We had a power drop on a Saturday morning. It turned off the A/C but the servers got past it with UPS. The servers hummed along merrily. The A/C did not come on. Did I mention it was Florida in the Summer? By Sunday afternoon the servers were shutting down due to heat. Once they cooled, they would try to boot back up. Then they would crash again. It took a while to piece the data all back together.

Who in America is standing up to privacy-bothering facial-recognition tech? Maine is right now leading the pack

Best thing about Pandemic - masks

Now you can just wear a mask anytime you don't want to be recognized. It is much more normal to do that now. In Maine you have been able to wear snow mask and seem normal. Mask up and geezer sunglasses. Protect the future.

How do we stamp out the ransomware business model? Ban insurance payouts for one, says ex-GCHQ director

Steven Guenther

Treat it like kidnapping

Back in the 70s some South American criminals kidnaped a Cola executive. The company did not pay, instead they had the kidnappers hunted down. The whole village was killed, dogs and chickens includes. Nobody kidnapped any of their executives again. Cyber crims have less bravery and think they are safer hiding behind a screen. Chop a few up and post pictures to Facebook, I would bet the crime rate would go down. This would be a great use for those armed drones that do not respect national sovereignty. Kevin Mitnick should be digging ditches for a living.

Hacking is not a crime – and the media should stop using 'hacker' as a pejorative

Steven Guenther

fuller definition

The definition of Hacker I grew up with was: Someone who comes up with a unique solution to a problem, usually faster to implement and run. It only solves the immediate problem, not the whole class of problems. They also do not document what they did.

So Hacker has been an insult for a long time. Adding criminal aspect was from looking at the code.

pretest patches

I worked at a place where one manager was trying to get rid of the hardware manager.

After a Tuesday patch day went badly, we had an after action meeting.

She asked why it was not tested. Umm MS does not give them to us beforehand.

Umm our dev environment is not nearly as complex as production.

The manager in charge of the hardware left within a month and the toxicity level went up.

The mask help stop your fluids from going into others. You need a face shield to stop others from getting into your eyes.

A polarized face shield would cut down on the angles the cameras would be able to see you at.

Already carry a tracker

If you carry a phone, you are already being tracked. The govt is not allowed to track you, but they require the phone companies to hold the tracking data for them. So you ARE being tracked by Big Brother. The problem is when someone who looks like you does a crime close to your phone. Now the cops show up at your door and put the squeeze in you.

Internet industry freaks out over proposed unlimited price hikes on .org domain names

Steven Guenther

More important - stop temp holding of domains

There is a way to grab a domain name for a couple days, to see if you like it.

There are companies that watch for name searches and grab those domains and hold them for ransom.

They should have to pay to hold them for even a day. That would cut the dirt bags out of that process.

If you get rid of don't understand the value of domain names look at whitehouse.gov vs whitehouse.sex.

There are dirt bags that camp out on misspellings of popular sites.

Bizarre mouse behaviour

When the optical mice came along, the holograms played havoc with them.

UK tech's gender pay gap: HP Inc closest to parity with 1.8% sliver – Civica, Huawei, Siemens straddle 40% chasm

What about hours worked

Does this survey look into the number of hours worked per week gap?

Others have found men working more hours, a greater differential than the wage difference on a title by title comparison.

Of course just adding in the CEO's pay and the cleaning crew with no control of the titles, sure shows a big difference.

IP valuation

How do you make a real valuation of the IP the company is "Leasing" from the Irish.

Currently, they make it equal to the profits in the other countries, thus yielding zero profit in that country.

The IP should have a set realistic value. But that requires brains and balls, neither of which any politician has.

The march of Amazon Business has resellers quaking in their booties

Steven Guenther

Re: This is new news?

The new and extra EVIL part is allowing knockoffs to be sold by Chinese and others. You put your product into the store, and someone else puts in a cheaper version. The product fails, the customer sends you the RMA. WTF?? If you are on Amazon, you are hard pressed to deny the return. Amazon does not police the market place, it is not in their interest. They just ship and do not provide any protections other than strong arming the domestic vendors.

Re: Housing problem

But who would be the liberal voters of tomorrow? You have to pay them to breed, so you have future voters. If only workers had children, then those kids would value work and through the UBI out the window, and the politicians with it.

Steven Guenther

UBI and Open Border are both bad ideas

UBI and Open Border are both bad ideas but they work REALLY BAD TOGETHER.

IF you have a small, well educated, homogeneous society, (like Silicon Valley) you might get away with it. But when you try to do it in south Texas or someplace with loads of border crossers that have no education and no stake in the society. It will quickly become untenable.

How long does a person have to be in the country to get the UBI? Do they have to stay in the country to continue getting it (can retirees spend some time in Mexico?) ?

Re: Lysenko on the phone

The other option is the "Lathe of Heaven" solution. Genetically change all people to be gray.

When the world is all one genotype there will be less discrimination. Except that people will always prefer those that have similar backgrounds.

The thing that really worries the liberal types is that perhaps the AI is revealing real truths.
