IT Angle

I'm not in IT but a sincere naive question, advance on salary ?

Is it unheard of in IT to be given an advance on your salary ? I was thinking, Oracle (if they were really nice) could have given him an advance on his salary. He was a brand new hire, so I'm sure trust issues would come into play instantly.

Re: No surprise

I'd like to hear your rant, actually. I don't think I'm the only one, and I think BA needs to hear it for their own good, as well as for their customers and IT staff!

Windows 10 pain: Reg man has 75 per cent upgrade failure rate

Always easier, if possible, to do a fresh install

Yes, I know, sometimes a fresh install is impossible. I think MS has cut costs way too much, and these kind of disasters happen. Good for profits short-term, horrible for long-term profits and customer service.

World goes SIM-free, leaving Sony and HTC trailing behind

I really like my Lumia 950. I've had it for a few months now, and no major problems. Granted, the rumors about MS stopping phones altogether makes me a tad uneasy, but I just don't see the upside for them totally stopping. Phones are the present and at least part of the future of computing, and they need to at least have a toe in.

I also have an Iphone 6 (pretty, works well but hate the cultishness and walled-garden of it all) and a few Android phones. If I can't use a Windows phone any more, I'll just go back to Android.

Look out, Windows Phone 8 users – yes, both of you – here's ... Windows 10 Mobile

Re: $49 Win Blu Jr

I had that phone. If memory serves me, it had too little internal hard drive space for the upgrade. Otherwise it was a great 4 inch Windows phone.

I have to thank all helpdesk and IT people

I took a course in college on "Data Processing" back in 1978. They had us learn to do a few things in BASIC and use the campus computer to print out our programs on paper. We used punch cards to input our data into the mainframe. Dinosaur days. I decided after that course I wanted nothing more to do with computers.

1993, new job, everyone used computers and email. I had to learn Windows 3.1 and how to use a mouse. I vividly remember the poor IT people teaching us how to left-click and drag.

1996 I bought my first computer. I took it home, knowing almost nothing whatsoever. Some of you lovely people undoubtedly had to suffer through at least one head-slappable support call from me, so I thank you for your time and your patience. :) In the intervening 20 years I've learned a ton, so now I call support very rarely. Google IS my friend and so is RTFM.

Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950XL: Clear thoughts of Continuum with a snazzy camera

Just bought a 950

I just bought a Lumia 950 mainly because of the smaller screen size. The 950XL is just too big for my pants pockets. I think Microsoft will gradually fix all the bugs and improve things, but yea, it will never be a player in the smartphone market. Maybe the Windows Mobile will do well in the corporate market ?

ProtonMail DDoS wipeout: Day 6. Yes, we're still under attack

In all fairness to Protonmail.....

they said they were under extreme duress by other businesses to pay up. I'll take their word for it. Yes, long term, it was a bad decision, and they do know that big time now.

I'm a tad surprised the discussion is going as well as it is so far.
