Press F to pay respects to the Windows 10 April Update casualties

Thumb Down

First contact....

Boss came into work with his laptop (windows 10 home on it)

Windows updated last night. He said it was endlessly restarting and blank screens etc.

Turns out the update had corrupted his local profile and MS was trying to start with a temp profile to help... however, that was going very funky, BSOD's, graphical flickering etc.

I tired the usual reg tricks to re-point the profile to the correct directory on the HDD. however that caused issues and it didnt login. I then tried copying over the NTUSER.dat file from the default profile into the corrupt profile folder.

Restarted with multiple BSOD's and flickering screen, couldnt do anything.

Only logs in with safemode. (not sure why startmenu or settings screens dont work in safemode?) couldnt add new user through control panel as it all has been moved.

So used CMD to add a new user, didnt work for some odd reason, restart and the new user wasnt created...

Ended up using Linux live boot, then force mounting HDD to remove the old ntuser.dat file and windows managed to do a "temp profile" on startup. Created new user from settings. it worked. booted into new user. Copied old files across from old profile, then deleted old profile.

Then the usual endless setting tweaks for software thats got to be configured...

Thanks MS loving the new feature....

Re: Isn't every version going to be "the best Windows ever"?

only way to get 30% on linux, would be to get the major software developers to produce products for linux.

I am one that will switch if this happens. and would switch the entire office over to linux if i could get Autodesk software on linux. add to that photoshop etc etc etc. unfortunately there isnt alternatives that do the same job.

Like the old saying, if they build it they will come.

I know plenty of engineers / architects / designers / manufacturers that would switch in a instant, if only the software would support linux without lame WINE or other work around crap. Ditto improved driver support to prevent crashes of said complex software.

oh i see... that secret location.. just a little bit east of the two runways... just between the runways... and doesn't have all that coolant plant on the roof... gotcha... ssshhhh don't tell anyone.

nothing like the article hinting to where it is located lol.

Re: Stop moving the goal posts!!!

yes Adobe is crap. but rarely used. Our business uses autodesk for production. and other linux based CAD software hasn't got the same features.

plus i don't have time to teach/test new software.

Anonymous Git
Stop

Stop moving the goal posts!!!

please stop removing features from products that people buy.

aka. windows 10 pro. you've removed some GPOs and labeled it for the enterprise version only!

Small businesses buy the Pro version so it has the GPO/domain features! We are not an enterprise with 100+++s of users!

i don't want telemetry, nor lock screen ads, nor store, nor special candy crush crap. Businesses are not you home user kids playing on candy crush. Its unprofessional to see this crap!

seriously, you make it harder for us by removing these GPO, so we have to hack around the problem a different way. its just lame. why should we have to deploy a script, or reg hack, or software restriction. when the GPO already existed!!!!

And then a filter list on the firewall in hope to stop your gay ass spying!

grrrrrrr. i wish i could go for linux workstations! if Adobe/Autodesk etc etc pull their fingers out!

TalkTalk claims 157,000 customers were victims of security breach

Anonymous Git

grrr

So talktalk, are you going to inform the 157,000 customers that have had there details stolen? and maybe tell the other 4 million (plus ex customers) that there's hasn't been, just for reassurance... That's if we have faith in your bullshit comments that come out...

Note to all other companies. Check your systems... encrypt the customers data at the very least! And stop keeping ex customers data!

Re: help..

yea been reading all over their site. the so called email form doesn't exist! don't really want to post this off lol

I suck at writing letters, ive been trying to ref lots of T&Cs and laws.

Anonymous Git

help..

Anyone got the email address of the complaint department at talktalk? every page link takes you to a phone number, i guess they removed the email link off their site.

Also anyone good at wording a strong worded letter? as im not paying talktalk any more money.

Short story, i informed talktalk i was leaving for BT on the 7th oct. so technically my 30days notice would be to 7th of Nov. However after checking up on them on the 28th Oct, they didn't put the disconnection down on the account back on the 7th, so now tell me i need to pay for another month! until the 28th Nov. Im saying i have given notice! so I have cancelled my DD in response to this and the hacking.

So anyone got any technically/law comments i can add to my letter? as well as responses to the hacking vs breach of their T&Cs?

We suck? No, James Dyson. It is you who suck – Bosch and Siemens

Re: Suckers

i agree with you. i have been through a lot of Hoovers. dyson is good at removing pets hair on carpet, but sucks as "hose" work...

But henry wins it fair play... ive hoovered 2 tonnes of rubble/dust out the loft (left over from old roofing), plaster from walls, and pretty much anything from a house renvovation. Its fallen down stairs multiple times, its survived major wet weather after i forgot to bring it in at night following hoovering a car (i forgot)

So Henry for the win!

just win they had a decent pet hair carpet tool (they are air blown and not motored)
