But yes, soon a new generation of fighter planes will be designed around an AI system. (If there's enough money left after the fascinating omnishambles known as the F-35. Aw, what am I thinking - of course there will be money for it!) Let's just hope a system like that isn't hacked.

DARPA's 'flying wing' drone inches closer to lift-off

allthecoolshortnamesweretaken

Re: 1950's redux / A 380

Also, you'd need a lot of sick bags for the passengers. If you want to exploit the aerodynamics of a flying wing to the max, a lot of people are sitting relatively far from the centre of gravity and relatively close to the wingtips. That makes for lively roller coaster rides ad every turn - which isn't everybody's cup of tea. Also, very few window seats. The aerodynamics are superb, but the sheer geometry involved comes with some drawbacks re practical use. Which is sad, because I'd book a flight in something like this.

Re: Lumps?

"Eddies in the time-space-continuum."

"So this is his sofa, then?"

I like the approach of modelling the universe as a fluid. From what I dimly remember about fluid dynamics this kinda feels right. Not in the sense of 'yes, that's it, this is how the universe works', but in the sense of 'it might bring us closer to understand just a little bit more'. Sometimes you change the way of looking at things just ever so slightly, and suddenly things fall into place.

* Plenty of experience in parts of the world where coal mining was done one a large scale in a densely populated area, like the Ruhrgebiet. Parts of Essen sunk some 20 - 25 metres. In Duisburg they actually utilised this when the harbour was expanded. They let the ground sink and saved a lot of excavating.
