Are you getting it? Yes, armageddon it: Mass hysteria takes hold as the Windows 7 axe falls

Re: Microsoft Win10 Specs

I've run Nvidia's binary driver since the day they released it as beta software. The first few months it was pretty unstable. Has not caused me any problems since then with newer versions though. Right now on this PC I have 102 days of uptime and I am running proprietary Nvidia binary driver on it too. I cannot ask for any more stability than I already have really. I guess what they say about Linux being choosy about who it's friends with is true? I've always gotten along with it myself though.

Re: sorry or not

Well I do not agree with you. Defeating racism is attacking an individual's right of association. Racism practiced on an individual level is protected behavior. It's no different than folks going to church really. This has all been decided in court too. See National Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie and learn how to freedom better. Take a civics course or something will ya? What is the world coming to these days, I swear! Someday you're going to realize just how short life really is. Then you're going to wonder why we all put up with you for so long.

Re: The cost of theft

MAGA!

PaulFrederick

The beatings will continue until productivity improves. The USA simply cannot afford to lose all manufacturing capability just so consumers can enjoy low prices. We have to make products here. This is a strategic imperative. Past administrations were prepared to destroy the country but the present one is on a different course. That's why we elected him!

USA! USA! We're No.1! And we want to keep it that way – in spaaaace

PaulFrederick

Re: 'Robots would also be unlikely to forget the SD card for their cameras'

To date the USA remains the only country that has *EVER* successfully landed a mission on the surface of Mars. No other country has done it even once. Well unless you want to count the 12 seconds one Soviet probe supposedly worked. Personally I do not put that into the win column myself. One of our rovers has been operating on the surface of Mars for 14 years now. Yes that's some kind of a record right there. So quit harping on one mission that failed. Space exploration is risky business but no one is more successful at it than the USA is. No one else even comes close.

PaulFrederick

The US using Russian vehicles is a form of welfare. Because if we don't pay those rocket scientists in Russia someone else that we don't want to will. That will ultimately cost us a lot more than what we're paying now too. Look at it as a form of non-proliferation.

PaulFrederick

Re: Consequences

Apollo was a fair sized war. Apollo was one of the major battles of the Cold War. Beating the Soviets was the only reason we went to the Moon. So even after Kennedy was assassinated the value of the mission was lost on no one. The end of Apollo was canceled though. The last vehicles were diverted to the Skylab project.

PaulFrederick

Re: Just wait.

The Moon? Been there. Done that already. I hear it smells like gun powder and rotten eggs. So the Chinese and Indians should love it.

But we stand a good chance of meeting artifacts they left. Organic life can't cross the vast gulfs of deep space, but machines can. Machines built to exploit resources would be pretty much hardwired to strip solar systems. Whole galaxies even. Greed 2.0. Organics are just the rough prototype. Intelligence will build a better model.

Does my boom look big in this? New universe measurements bewilder boffins

PaulFrederick

Re: Possibly.

The Big Bang was an explosion like none other since. So it cannot be compared against other explosions that have happened since then either. The Big Bang did something that no other explosion has. It created reality as we now know it. Although not immediately. It took hundreds of millions of years for things to cool down enough for matter, time and space to even exist. Before that it was just an expanding ball of energy. That's what's so strange about the event. It was a singular occurrence in our reckoning. What it did is nothing short of completely astonishing too. Every mote of dust in this whole Universe owes its very existence to that one moment. We are the echo. An aftershock? I am not boffin enough to know.

PaulFrederick

This all just goes to show

That the more you know, the more you know of that you don't know. Every discovery only leads to new questions. There's a theory of expanding ignorance in here somewhere.

Why don't ad blockers work like that now? I could care less about the bandwidth. I just don't want to see the ads. I'd rather websites did not know I was using a blocker either. It is no business of theirs.

Re: Could have been good news, but I've had enough of doze and I'm migrating to Linux

Don't think that running Linux makes you immune to group think. There's really no viable way to get around running Systemd today. Believe me, I tried. Without systemd my system booted up in half the time that systemd is taking now. Which in my case was 12 seconds cold start. The actual OS was booting in 3 seconds. This is on a mechanical HDD too. Fortunately once I have a system all configured and installed I don't boot up much. I've still had to deal with systemd a little bit recently. It sucked nutz too. I also don't usually deal with init either, or the fallout from init for that matter. Still systemd seems to be a resource hog compared to what classic init was. I wish I wasn't using systemd. But the distro maintainers all seem to think it is important so we're stuck with it now.

PaulFrederick

There's little reason not to switch

If you've hooked your wagon up to Microsoft's train then you really should march to their beat. Single point corporate control is one of the big reasons I don't use Windows myself. But if I did I'd toe the line. Just like I have to do in the platform I use now. I go along to get along. Breaking away from the herd has its downsides.

Re: How to get rid of fleas on your dog

Do you know how those same Russians were admitted into the United States? I mean they were foreigners and foreigners can't just waltz into the country legally. So then the question remains which administration was in power that gave them the permission to enter the country? That would be Obama. Because he was in power when that meeting took place. So that whole meeting was a trap setup by the Democrats in the first place! That's collusion right there. Members of Obama's administration colluded with foreign agents to entrap people in the opposition campaign.

Oh, and by the way just listening to people is not a crime.

PaulFrederick

Re: How to get rid of fleas on your dog

Nixon resigned. Are people really this ignorant today?

PaulFrederick

Re: Opinion poll proxy vote!

The United States of America as the name suggests is not a flat democracy, but rather a democratic republic. As such we are not subject to the tyranny of the masses either. That is part of what makes this nation so great. The elaborate system of checks and balances that have been carefully crafted into a system insuring that everyone has a voice. Not just a simple majority.

You can blame taxes for a profit nosedive, but Seagate... the taxman didn't flatten your sales

PaulFrederick

The times they are a changing

No one wants those old rust disks anymore. But I just bought one for this PC. It was cheaper than getting a SSD. I bought a Seagate HDD too. It is pretty fast for a mechanical disk. I'm getting over 200 MB/S out of it.

# hdparm -tT /dev/sda1

/dev/sda1:

Timing cached reads: 26068 MB in 2.00 seconds = 13045.46 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads: 626 MB in 3.01 seconds = 208.20 MB/sec

It is a ST1000DM010-2EP102

So $50 for a TB of storage, what the hey? Down the road someday I'll get one of them fancy SSDs. But it better be a lot faster than the rust I'm spinning now is.

'WHAT THE F*CK IS GOING ON?' Linus Torvalds explodes at Intel spinning Spectre fix as a security feature

Re: The bug is better than the buggy fix !!!

You hope they updated? Who do you think they are James Bond? Most of us have nothing on our systems but data anyone can access on the Internet anyways. It is not like you're going to get the launch codes out of my PC, that's for sure. For the processing power it'd take to gain any worthwhile data out of Spectre or Meltdown you might as well just mine for bitcoins. You'd be ahead of the game. At least with mining you know there's some value in it eventually. On my PC right now you'd just be reading this stupid comment I'm posting. Big whoop de do. Random cache data is low grade ore. It's not worth digging into. Not unless you're focused on a valuable target at least. Which most of us just aren't.

It gets worse: Microsoft’s Spectre-fixer wrecks some AMD PCs

Re: athlon

All Windows users are boot lickers.

PaulFrederick

This is what happens

When you relinquish control to a faceless corporation that does not care about you in the slightest. But you shouldn't be running such antiquated hardware anyways. So it's totally your own fault.

Woo-yay, Meltdown CPU fixes are here. Now, Spectre flaws will haunt tech industry for years

PaulFrederick

Re: Error?

Microseconds? That is 3 orders of magnitude slower than processor speed, which is clocked in nanoseconds. Millionths, billionths, you know? All of this sounds a lot like spitballing to me. Sure in theory there is a flaw, but practically exploiting it is another matter entirely. How does one know if they've just gotten a password, or random garbage? Without context and structure data is pretty worthless. Meltdown and Spectre strike me more as slow news cycle hype than anything else right now.

Re: Good stuff!

Don't be such a silly goose. Of course there's going to be a winner. There's always a winner. We're going to be the winners too. Because our button is a lot bigger than Kim's is.

PaulFrederick

The solution here is obvious

We just catch, then flay alive all system crackers. Problem solved! Because the performance penalty we're all going to have to pay otherwise is simply unacceptable. So I say make the guilty pay. Of course if hardware manufacturers want to replace the defective hardware they've sold us all I'd be open to that as well. In a way that is making the guilty pay too.

Some 'security people are f*cking morons' says Linus Torvalds

PaulFrederick

Re: Yet somehow...

Anyone can take a piss on the floor. Be a hero and shit on the ceiling!

PaulFrederick

Re: Linus Torvalds is not a Security Expert

It is plain to see that you don't get computers. Machines need to run. They can't stop for anything. Maybe they're getting exploited, maybe you'll figure it out someday. But as long as they're still doing the tasks they've been assigned that's going in the right direction. Now put on your big boy pants.
