Re: The Cloud

Yes, I'm aware if the difference between Cloud (aka other peoples computers) and co-lo (your computers in other peoples buildings).

The point I was making was

1. to deliberatley overlap the 2 for comedic effect

2. point out that in both scenarios you are shit out of luck when trusting other people to run your hardware and software for you when they fuck it up

You only have control if you host your own DCs, run your own power backups, host your own servers storage and network, and employ people who 1. Give a fuck and 2. Know what they are doing.

In todays IT industry, management clowns are getting sucked off to believe other people running kit for them is better. They are wrong.

IoT only makes sense for data gathering and processing

One great idea would be multiple sensors to be used on farms monitoring temperature, rainfall, humidity, soil moisture, & soil acidity/alkalinity.

Couple this with the use of an automated drone using GPS to navigate over each of these sensors to act as the 'remote WiFi' to collect this locally stored data, which would overcome the issue of the lack of WiFi/4G signal over large rural areas.

Or just add WiFi repeaters across the estate too, to create a local hive network.

Re: Why the fuck...

"... is Autoplay on USB even a thing?"

because users are idiots and expect 'things to work' without any understanding or effort on their part. Put a CD in a CD player - user sees it plays music. Put a thing in a slot, expect it to 'do something'.

The alternate is for them to, open file explorer or My Computer, navigate to the newly created drive letter and click it, then review the contents, whilst understanding the nature of file type extensions & not just look at the icons and assume the picture of a document is actually a document and not an executable, and then not ignore any warnings about the file being potentially dangerous.

So they chose the 'make it do something and hope for the best' as the default auto-play setting.

Re: FreeBSD

"3 legged would be better"

It depends how we define 'stable' - if this is meant in terms of 'resilience against failure', a 4 legged table could afford to lose 1 leg and would still remain more stable than a 3 legged table that lost 1 leg.

Same goes for those horses in the stable. However they are more likely to end up in a Findus Crispy pancake should such a failure occur.

Re: Power Supply Work

" As for prolonged power supply work, never heard of a generator?"

Eh?! How does having a generator help if you have to swap a power supply inside a server?

Many servers (e.g. HP) have bays for redundant PSUs and redundant CPU/internal cooling fans - so this would have been a way to keep a server running whilst swapping out a failed PSU or fan - but a generator is of no help at all.
