"Value is what the market is prepared to pay".
Ordinarily, yes, but it's not, as is commonly insinuated, definitional. Sure investors and their advisors might not do better than chance but find one who'll admit that their decision aren't based on an understanding of market value. It's just that usually, their judgments are the only ones that happen to matter. In this case though, the court gets to decide. And whatever you might think of lawyers, in this case I'll side with them.
The DH88 Comet racer was also a pretty good-looking aircraft. In fact pretty much all the de Havilland's of the inter-war years had a definite elegance about them. I'd nominate the DH88 Drafon Rapide as the best looking airliner of all time.
And yes, Beluga Whales are indeed beautiful animals.
I second the other posters who suggest that if you just want to get a close up view of your world a USB microscope is the way to go. Even better get a USB otoscope/endoscope. You can put those in places a smartphone just wouldn't go.
(Your ears of course - that's why they're called otoscopes.)
On the other hand what's the point in taking the same photo that literally millions of others have taken before you. Unless you're a professional photographer, you're taking pictures to make a record of the (hopefully) happy moments of your life. Maybe that's narcissistic but it's also very human and as far as I can see harmless.
"The general principle that we pay people for their information and contributions is critical if we want people to live with dignity as machines get better,"
Except IP law was never designed to put a price on information*. And in any case how is that going to help the information poor i.e the people who actually stand to be out of work by Google's robots. It seems to me that Lanier is actually infected by the very techno utopianism he's made a career out of decrying.
Yes he's added the meaningless *contributions" in there as if that was going to fool anyone.
