Colonel John Glenn. First American to orbit the earth, Friendship 7 mission, 1962
You're thinking of the character Lev Andropov (Peter Stormare) in Armageddon, who said "Components? American components, Russian components, All made in Taiwan"
Bob, you are making an assumption that you will always be "safe" and that you will never be "dumped" into the cauldron reserved for those for whom your prejudice know no bounds.
Be careful, that cauldron is very large and includes folks' who also thought they were "safe".
"Boot camp isn't about doing what you're told every step of the way"
Really? Which part of the military did you serve in? The Rainbow Haired Regiment?
Boot camp is purely about doing what you are told, when you are told and they way you are told to do it. Individualism is just not tolerated, at all.
It's also about building up stamina, strength and making sure that the team always comes first.
That's why a good Drill Sergeant is so effective; [s]he breaks you down, tears you apart, then creates a brand new you. A you who follows orders, even to your own death, without question or hesitation.
The problem with your question, "How much do YOU want to pay for the health of other people?", is that to someone else, you are the other person. Your family are the "other people".
Maybe, you should be asking "How much do you want to pay for your own and your families' health?"
Reducing health service funding because others', who you think, do not deserve it, also reduces those services you, or a member of your family, may have to rely on.
Really, forget about other people and look at what you [may] need for yourself and your family. Then ask the question.
we, as computer users and purchasers of software, hardware or service, should start charging these data collection businesses $/£/€ 1 for every gigabyte they want off us?
After all, if we didn't buy / download / use their software, hardware or service, they wouldn't exist. They exist to service our needs; we don't exist to service their needs.
Perhaps it's time to remind them all of these facts?
Let's make this simple for you. Large ISP without net neutrality: I see you are trying to access Limbaugh. To get better access, instead of waiting 3 hours to download his latest podcast, why not sign up for our Talk-Show package? less than the price of a cup of coffee per day, $4.99 a month, plus taxes and fees, for a 24 month contract). It's the only way you can access the great content on Rush Limbaugh podcast site...
I also see your wife is accessing the local volunteer-for-whatever site. Why not make the experience better? Sign up for our "you are the backbone of our communities" package, for less than a cup of coffee per day? Only $4.99 per month, plus taxes and fees, for 12 months.
I see you want to watch Sean Hannity using your iPad. To ensure a safe, continuous and reliable experience why not sign up for our TV-on-the-Web package? Only $19.95 a month, plus taxes and fees, for 24 months. It's the only way you can watch your favorite Fox News stars...
We've noticed you are a loyal and active member of the Campaign to Re-Elect President Trump. Why not sign up for our Re-Elect President Trump web package? Only $39.99 a month, plus taxes and fees for 48 months? 5% of the proceeds go towards President Trump's reelection campaign. It's actually the only way you can access the Campaign to Re-Elect President Trump...
We have noticed you are surfing the web using your iPad. We offer an excellent package to ensure your experience is what you have to come to expect. Only $3.99 a month, plus taxes and fees, for a 24 month contract. Your wife is using a cell phone to access the web. That'll be $1.99 a month, plus taxes and fees, for 6 months. We reserve the right to increase or decrease fees and charges depending on the prevailing market conditions. These fees are required as part of your contract to maintain our great service we provide to you...
Oh, I see you are using a Linux-based computer. That'll be $4.99 a month, plus taxes and fees, for a 6 month contract.
Your monthly bill now stands at a reasonable: $80.89 plus your normal monthly internet service charges of $79.99. That'll be $160.88 plus taxes and fees. Payment due within 7 days.
Oh, you want to access The Register to tell everyone how great things are now? We have a special Technology package for that. It gives you access to all the latest greatest technology related news and websites! Excludes Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook. The package is only $19.99 a month, plus taxes and fees; access to The Register is a further $4.99 a month. They wrote something nasty about us last year. Yes we know it was true, but they were really horrible and made fun of us - for pointing out that we didn't look after our customers' data, do what we said we would do and for having leaky servers...
Large ISP with net neutrality: you want what? Why you asking? Decent-ish access comes as part of your internet package. Nope. no extra fees or taxes or charges. But if you want you can purchase our higher speed package for an extra $9.99 a month. Still the same sort of reliable, sort of consistent access you have always enjoyed.
You're very welcome and have a great day!
Back in the day, the US Civil Service couldn't get any suitably qualified white men to apply for any jobs with them, unless it was in a law enforcement agency. Thus, they went with other suitably qualified folk.
Same as the various State and City agencies dotted around the country.
"4) Are willing to put in absurd numbers of anti social hours to get a job done."
"...which is likely to do with it being a pretty awful working enviroment requiring a lot of time worked out of hours which most sane people tend to want to spend with their families"
these two points also explain why there are so few women in nursing or any of the other caring professions. /sarc
"...her previous keyboard had a cloth dust cover that she always put over it at night (in case it got cold?!?),..."
Because at any decent Secretary School you were told to cover the typewriter keyboard every evening. If you didn't do this you usually got a thoroughly disapproving look (almost enough to sink a career) from the instructor.

Isn't this the standard behaviour of most people? Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary as far I can tell.
Do you earn money using this or that platform? Good. So do most IT professionals. The thing about being a professional is that you are (should be) adaptable and capable to what the employer wants. Not being so, means no job, no money and certainly not being a professional whatever.
An employer wants job x doing for platform y. Who cares what the underlying platform is? There's money involved.
Which OS is used by someone in their leisure time? Who cares? It's their computer, their leisure time. What has it got to do with anyone else?
Shouldn't that statement be "it took too long"?
A statement about a reboot is not a preposition nor an infinitive. Though, the experience of a reboot is frequently an infinitive experience...
I do agree with the many others' commenting, the user in this case is not the cretin; the IT department is, for the many reasons already explained by those same commenters.
