We three kings of Dell EMC are; bigging up storage we traverse AFA

SniperPenguin

Dells issue is that their storage is cheap, but OLD.

SCxxxx = Compellent with a new bezel

UNITY = VNXe with a new bezel

Equalogic = Still available, but effectively dead

They are riding the coat-tails of Nutanix and vSAN to win in the HCI space (not a bad strategy, to be fair) but historically they have unintentionally killed off any software they have purchased

Another Pebble Fan here

From using the Pebble 2 since the Kickstarter days, I was gutted when I heard about the FitBit purchase.

However, the Ionic is a step in the right direction, and you can see where the Pebble dev team have had their influence. I think with a few software updates, we will be back in Pebble-ish territory.

Microsoft's Windows 10 Workstation adds killer feature: No Candy Crush

2. Those with access to an NFR key

3. Those with access if a procurement manager with no idea what they are buying

Say HCI is an enhanced server. If you don't already sell 'em, it could be game over, man

SniperPenguin

Hardware is now not important

Unless you have a raging boner for a particular bezel or support contract, the compute hardware is largely invisible.

Nutanix knew this, hence why are openly becoming a software company (rather than reselling SuperMicro) . VMware are in the same boat with vSAN, with Readynodes largely outstripping the black-box variants out there.

Given that the rest of the options out there are also-rans (again, unless you have a raging Vendor allegiance or a Sales guy who regularly takes you on trips), it becomes two questions.

1. Do I buy Nutanix or vSAN?

2. Is HCI bloody right for me in the first place?

One more credit insurer abandons Maplin Electronics

SniperPenguin

"Will be a big shame if Maplin close. I don't use them often, but when I forget to order what I need from Amazon they usually have the plug or adapter that I need quickly."

Fixed That For You.

It amazes me the number of people who want places to stay open, but dont actually use them on a regular basis. Dont get me wrong, a wander around Maplins a few days ago was a "Tat-Fest" but they have sections on satellite installations, Home Wi-Fi, Computing Kits (Ardinio, Pi etc) that felt like add-ons rather than stuff they could be focusing on to fill a niche.

Honey, I shrank the company: Tintri's dire third quarter presages a worse final one

SniperPenguin

Ouch

Tintri is a classic example of "not doing enough when you have the lead" - Which is a shame since I like the product.... They were doing VM reporting before some others were even vSphere aware.

As for a buyer? Nimble went around the houses before being bought by HPE. The only place I could really see them going to is Lenovo (where they would die a slow, horrible death).

Dell? - EMC thank you

NetApp? - Solidfire

HPE? - Nimble / InfoSight

HDS / Huawei? - They Prefer to develop in-house.

Cisco? - They have been burnt before (Whiptail) and personally I think NetApp would be a better option for them...

Server winners and losers: HPE, Dell EMC still sitting pretty at the top, but uh-oh Lenovo

SniperPenguin

Re: All hail the white box makers

Dell is #1 according to units shipped

HPE is #1 according to revenue of those units

So it depends on whose PowerPoint slides you are looking at ;-)

Developers, developers, developers: How 'serverless' crowd dropped ops like it's hot

SniperPenguin

"Serverless" in Layman terms...

In a Bar, after your initial few drinks the Bartender will always try to move you to "shots" rather than Wine / Beer because:

- They are more expensive

- There is more profit in them

- They are a "cooler" drink

- You are too drunk to know better (or care about the first two points)

There you go, I've just explained the pricing models for Serverless computing for you.

Right, HPE. You've eaten your hyperconverged Simplivity breakfast. Will it blend?

SniperPenguin

Not many.

DNS resolver 9.9.9.9 will check requests against IBM threat database

SniperPenguin

Lets be honest here, what will basically happen is the following:

Is it a test network / Home Lab with no self-installed DNS service or daemon / running on a flaky ISP / for use in failover / IoT device you want nowhere near your own network?

If Yes, then:

Primary DNS : 9.9.9.9

Secondary DNS : 8.8.8.8

Google's phone woes: The Pixel and the damage done

SniperPenguin

They forgot the reason for the Nexus' success.

You were not paying a brand tax.

The Nexus line was the purest Android experience you could get. No naff overlay, regular updates and a phone at a reasonable price. Profit margins were tight and as a result it suffered in other areas (little marketing, less support etc) but the concept was a good one.

Very little third party support as well (Otterbox refused to build a case for it, for example).

They need to return to what they were good at.

Re: You cant have it both ways

RIcher Sounds and Screwfix Essentially operate on the "Argos" model.

- Small shop front

- Low-pay staff with no / little product knowledge

- Nice cheap warehouse racking in the back.

SniperPenguin

You cant have it both ways

You cant lament the passing of a store selling legacy gear, whilst at the same time arguing you can get the regular stuff "cheaper online".

If you dont support them, a business will fold.

Commvault scale-out appliance gunning for Rubrik and Cohesity

SniperPenguin

So pretty much what I said before then (Each node is a Media Agent).

SniperPenguin

Pardon my ignorance (Its been a while since I did my Simpana Installation / Administration course), but isn't the Media Agent essentially the name for CommVaults Data Mover?

This looks like multiple MA's pointing at a shared clustered Repository (probably running a local index cache per node, or shared between nodes) with dedupe enabled.

Happy to be proved wrong, as the explanation against them "being complex" is simply them listing CV's feature set.

SniperPenguin

So this is basically a new Bezel on a few 1U CommVault Media Agents?

Zuck shows Virtual Empathy by visiting storm-wrecked Puerto Rico in VR

SniperPenguin

Im not Zuckerberg fan, but:

Quoting the article:

"Facebook has also made other contributions to the crisis. Zuckerberg said the company has donated US$1.5m to the relief effort, activated the Safety Check feature that lets people inform their loved ones they're safe and sent people to the island to help restore internet services so that citizens and emergency responders alike can enjoy internet access."

Now safety check rubbish aside - If they have done the above, I wouldn't give two shits about him deciding to VR-about in the disaster zone.... Unless all the commenters above, of course, have performed similar actions - In which case go ahead and claim the moral high ground.

Western Digital continues buying spree by snapping up Tegile

Tegile arrays tire of SAS backplane, cosy up to hunky newcomer NVMe

SniperPenguin

Re: Have they given Chris a free array or something?

1. It's not FUD, I watched it happen this year. Also, I did not specify a timeline - I was referring to a series of events (of which you have picked on one). I could have also mentioned their marketing dept re-tweeting install photos from 2016, but I didnt think I needed to go that far.

2. I'm not a competitor - As I said, I work for a VAR.

3. Western Digital have proved me right:

The ultimate full English breakfast – have your SAY

SniperPenguin

Re: Runny eggs ?

"Forget Brexit? It’s not possible. Remainers just want to eat yancy nancy croissant and just pretend they like a good full English breakfast."

Whilst Brexiteers want a greasy "Full English" (oddly, not British..., funny that ;-) ) with a copy of the Sun....

HPE to staff: 'We are permanently clipping your costs'

SniperPenguin

"travel pre-approval process and tool"

"A shiny new "travel pre-approval process and tool" has been launched...."

Who wants to bet that this cost far more than what will be saved stopping the travelling engineers going somewhere better than Greggs for lunch?

As senior bosses eject and shares crash... is it time to pray for Nutanix?

SniperPenguin

Hardly surprising...

So you are sitting pretty with a majority portion of the HCI segment...

Then:

1. You lose some high profile staff members

2. Simplivity eat away at the low end business (2-3 nodes - You can argue that is isnt their market but all deals are important End of Quarter)

3. VMware are pushing vSAN *HARD* now.... The release of 6.5 onwards made it a viable choice, and it is easier to discount software licensing than a Nutanix chassis.

Only way was down, really.... Even it they rally, its a "Lets get bought by Dell" situation.

Another career suicide as reporter leaves The Register for broadcaster

"This is Andrew Martin, Sky News, signing off" ..... :(

Well, hot-diggity-damn, BlackBerry's KEYone is one hell of a comeback

SniperPenguin

Listen to all the Android whingers....

The only viable phone OS options out there now (unless you have xBILLION for a whole new App store, ongoing dev and PR campaign) are Android or iOS

Seeing as the latter isnt sharing anytime soon and you are free to customise the living bollocks out of the former, the choice is obvious. They tried cooking up there own, and look at how that ended up (Cries of "it isnt well supported"..... "Where are all the Apps?"...... "Why doesnt it update like Android / Apple?") etc.

For BlackBerry to keep going (and pay employees) they made the most logical choice, and spotted a gap in the market for a phone with a keyboard. If you want blackberry to thrive, support them.

If not, go back to your iPhone.

We're building a wall and the over-30TB market is going to pay for it

NetApp to chop 1,450 staffers from payroll, reveals revenue stumble

SniperPenguin

Re: I'm calling a headline for 2017

Because that would leave Cisco at the mercy of SuperMicro (who make Nimbles tin) - Buying NetApp would give them access to a larger installed base and prop. tin they can control.

SniperPenguin

I'm calling a headline for 2017

"Cisco buys struggling NetApp for <low number here> to own the UCS stack"

'Printer Ready'. Er… you actually want to print? What, right now?

SniperPenguin

"Well, it’s hardly my fault that Apple has specifically designed iOS to be wirelessly incompatible with my existing printer. Expecting me to purchase a new printer to support the inadequacies of the iPhone is taking the piss. If a mobile phone’s audio speaker is weak and tinny, should I upgrade my friends and only accept calls from people with deep, booming voices?"

No, but it is your fault for using iOS in the first place ;)

The Register's entirely serious New Year's resolutions for 2016

SniperPenguin

"Our overall resolution is to become an even better business tech news publication"

Translation - Our advertisers want us to be more corporate in return for larger, more cash-rich marketing campaigns.

When will you guys realise that we read you because you are *NOT* Techtarget, or any of all the other bland template-based "tech-websites" that just quote from each other's articles and vendor press releases.

You are popular because your are independent of that bulll*****, You have the BOFH, good articles from Chris, Alisdair and Trevor (amongst others) who write things here that would likely be edited out of existence on other sites.

Lose that, and you lose your readership base - Your call.

North Wales Police outsourcing deal results in massive overspend

SniperPenguin

Re: Motorists stay clear of North Wales

Being a Colwyn Bay local, I can answer that one (Disclaimer, I used to work for Traffic Wales - Think Highways Agency for the Welsh).

The 50mph zone on the A55 through Colwyn Bay sits between to 70 zones. The only reason it exists is because the slip-roads are "too short" in theory and therefore you couldn't possibly accelerate / brake in time if the roads were 70mph. Of course, this is not true of vehicles of this century so is mute.

There has been talk of fitting average speed cameras, but the revenue was not deemed sufficient (in a rare case of defending cameras, they are not ALWAYS fitted by the traffic agencies or police on major roads - Sometimes they are fitted to slow down traffic during an extending period of roadworks, say during the North Wales tunnel upgrades.)

So unless plod sticks a car with a camera on the Rainbow bridge (or hides up the sliproad of Colwyn Bay), cars just carry through at 60mph...

Lenovo reveals its Nutanix hyper-spawn

SniperPenguin

Only one winner here.....

Lenovo.

They sell hardware no matter what route you take (and with the aggressive pricing that the distributors are kicking out, they will win some too).

All they need is a decent SAN, rather than decade-old rebadged IBM kit (Although the new Lenovo made S-series are decent cheap MSA alternatives, if a little basic)
