"Installing Linux is a step to getting a life unless you consider waiting for all those painfully slow Windows updates/reboots to be a life."
Happy to install it in certain circumstances,,,, the life I'm talking about is the constant "ooh install Linux" to every flipping article that's published on here that mentions an OS, the constant "hmmm this article hasn't mentioned Linux yet, lets steer it that way", really its like a broken record and so tedious.
The world is a big place, multiple OS's exist, you may or may not like some of them - others do, but why the hell do you have to go on about it all the time and steer every conversation towards Linux.
sits back and awaits the diatribe from the diarrhoea tribe.
Oh FFS
here we go again - once again a story not about Linux has been usurped by the Penguins.....
Install Linux ................................ BORING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
get a life
"I don't want to read political discourse on The Reg. I've been coming here for my tech news for at least 15 years (probably longer). It seems a relatively new thing, in the last couple of years, with Kieran a big contributed, which is a shame as he's actually a talented tech writer."
how is pointing out that Texas had every help chucked at it yet in this case the locals seem to have been all but forgotten in any way a political comment ? Simple fact, Texas is mainland USA and will always be treated better than offshore colonies, especially by a president who's racial leanings are quite obviously questionable. Maybe if there had been a large redneck voter population there they might have a better chance of service they deserve.
"To be fair, Windows doesn't have bugs, Windows IS a bug."
"To be fair" - on these openly belligerent penguinista infested forums
that'll be a first
Be nice to see a post about an OS that isn't Linux not defaced by them (I appreciate this was about Linux but as ye sow so shall ye reap). Don't like something guys - here's a though - don't tell the rest of us because we don't care.
"Ideally Lenovo should provide BIOS reflashing tool which works under Linux :-("
Any why ?
A post further down states Ubuntu isn't supported by Lenovo, why should they expend resources? They support Windows and supply a BIOS flash tool for Windows - Sorted.
Physician Heal Thyself
you caught it, you fix it.
"I think if anyone should be sued, it should be Lenovo (and any other affected manufacturers), and they in turn may sue Intel because it's probably Intels fault. Some how."
FFS - If this was Windows you'd be blaming Microsoft alllllll the way down the line - there would have been way Intel would catch even the slightest hint of blame in these forums.
Simple fact of modern life, people will shout about protection of their assets til they are blue in the face, but when it comes down to it the simple act of typing a password or fishing out the challenge response device and using it is all far too onerous for them.
Face recognition, contactless pay, cheap fingerprint readers........
Use them - you deserve what you get.
"retired AS/400s "
I so miss my old B35, mind you - showing someone how to power it down by typing PWRDWNSYS *IMMED at the command prompt and then accidentally hitting the enter key with your elbow is not recommended - Got lots of praise from the boss for keeping what appeared to be a poorly system from going down though :)
"Full disclosure: I have multiple laptops at home, both Apple and several Wintel variants. In the last ten years one Apple power supply has gone TITSUP, I've lost track of the number of repairs and replacements for the windows machines' power bricks (the ThinkPad being the worst)."
So by Windows machines you mean ones that would have gone titsup running Linux as well or are you trying to imply Windows was at fault ?
Fujitsu was always the worst for me, not because of the power bricks but because of the fact they were so shoddily made that when you picked them up half of the screws underneath used to fall out.
"Also, if an engineer at Apple refuses to work on this out of their personal beliefs, should they also go to jail? "
Yes, or Apple as a minimum should turf them as they are the ones being dragged through the courts.
I don't believe I should pay taxes which go to fund things like subsidising the restaurants in the houses of parliament or MPs second homes - but I have to - and if I don't I fully expect to be sanctioned by the courts system.
I can prove I don't own a Ferrari so wouldn't have to hand over my keys. The laws of physics say I cant levitate, so wouldn't have to prove that. If Apple can prove they have no physical way of doing the decryption then lay out the evidence, if Apple hadn't already worked out if its breakable or not before they put it out in the big wide world then they weren't doing their job back then as seeing if your system can be hacked is a fundamental in security design.
Irrelevant to some point
if Apple are compelled to do so by a court then that's what they should do or face the consequences. The law applies to all of us, not just those who can afford expensive lawyers. If Apple are ordered by the courts and don't (assuming they can) then cell doors should be heard closing.
"WHAT ABOUT THE WEAPONS? The phone didn't harm anyone!"
that's a rather puerile argument - of course the phones didn't harm people, but nut jobs that commit these crimes rarely commit them in a vacuum - unless its just they are a total nut job.
Wanting to check out the comms of these scumbags is a valid line of investigation - regardless of whether it eventually yields fruit or not it would be irresponsible not to and down right criminal to prevent them doing so if its possible.
"If you don't like it, don't use it"
I like Linux
I dislike some of the penguinistas, and until they start acting like decent human beings and not a bunch of petulant children I will continue
and it says SOME (which side do you fall)
1. You didn't ask a question.
Well spotted I didn't - and nor did I say I did.
2. This isn't a linux forum. It is, however, full of people who know a lot about computers. And development. And how not to do things.
I know it isn't, my grasp of English is capable of understanding such things. With regards how not to do things it would seem though that some do not seem to understand how to relate to other people in a civilised manner.
3. The majority of whom disagree with you.
And they are welcome to do so - I have no issues with being disagreed with at all, I do have issues at times with the answers and attitudes to questions I have asked in the aforementioned forums.
What does get annoying really really fast is unwarranted abuse, I totally agree with the asking questions that can be googled in 30 seconds - pisses me off also, my posts in the forums have been far from easy - the first being about virtualising a Win95 installation (linked to a GC) that I was having issues with onto a Linux box - all I was greeted with (as is common when Microsoft is mentioned on here as well as the Linux sites) copious amounts of diarrhoea as to why I would dare to do such a thing..... its easy when to tell when its about to start - the M$s start appearing.
Funny thing is, you never get the same crap in Microsoft forums, plenty of idiots saying it must be a virus, or other inane comments, but on the whole no abuse - not even when its a question that can be answered by a quick search in 30 secs. Seems to be something about the mentality of some of the penguin community (the chief wrangler being one of them) that being an arse seems to be tolerated and occasionally lorded.
I use Linux, I like Linux, Id never install it at work purely because of the attitude of some on the forums.
Note - I said SOME users. If you find offence at that ask which camp you fall in.
"I thought it only had victims"
same can be said of Linux - anyone who asks a question the penguin brigade think of as beneath them soon becomes one themselves. Looks like the wranglers attitude comes free with a Linux install.
"Any particular reason why you omitted Microsoft from your list of American Cultural Imperialists?
(Linux FTW (which of course is essentially international as an ecosystem))"
Jeezzz Louise
even for a Penguinista, dragging Microsoft into it and bigging up Linux in a forum post about Sausage rolls.....
OH PLEASE GET A LIFE.
"I love how MSCEs repeatedly show their lack of understanding of Linux"
As a user of Linux since the early days, and an MCSE the only thing I can say in reply to that is its a pity some in the Linux community have a lack of understanding when it comes to dealing with people who ask for help.
The only thing keeping me from rolling out Linux here (and yes its my choice) is that if \ when something happens that is beyond my knowledge, I will have to deal with the complete f**kwits who inhabit the Linux forums. If they consider your issues beneath them they act like a bunch of 5 year olds with the vocabulary of a docker (no disrespect to dockers intended - sorry if you are one for labelling you as low as them).
No as usual, some will see this as a slur against all the Linux community, and - as I'm one of them - it isn't, just the ones who seem to try and emulate the lord high penguin wrangler himself.
