In Windows 10 Update land, nobody can hear you scream

Re: "Is Windows 10 so incredibly different..."

Qubes sounds interesting, thanks for the lead.

I've a client that has to process thousands of emails from teenagers. Their system needs to be restored from image every few months, and now it needs Windows10 screwups fixed also.

We were looking at VM's for email or OS freezes, Qubes might be a good solution.

Re: The commute's a bugger though.

"Less People, about the same amount of air, but the waiting time can be a real killer..."

If you mean the waiting time until all the politics/problems are solved, then Mars looks the better option than fixing the tube (est. 1863)

Banks too...

It's quite clear that many large institutions do not protect the data properly.

Westpac Bank Australia,

My father in-law had an account with them Eg. Mr. Smith As he was not internet savvy, we added my personal email address for any required emails. It was the only place we ever associated my email with his name.

A while later came the typical grammatically challenged phishing email, To: jones at jones.com

Dear Mr Smith, Your account... I still have it on file somewhere.

Changed banks after that... if they can't look after an email address, how can they be trusted with money.

Re: this is only the tip of the ice burg

"Skybridge, hills, bsa handle the installer base, much like the cow boys of old, they use threats and abuse, no work, hold up payment, send you to jobs that have , already been done, cant be done for physical reasons (often 3 and more times),"

I want to see some stories along the lines of...

"Can't make it to that scheduled job tomorrow"

"Why not, you'd better get there or else"

"Because I don't have enough petrol to get there, because you @#)$*@# didn't pay me"

I'm going to be doing that with slow/non payers this year, it reaches a point where it's better to not have the work at all. At least you've then the time spare to allot to better clients.

If nbn™ can't say when it will arrive in your street, you're getting a Telstra HFC connection

Re: This non-NBN is hurting Australian exports

Small export businesses, apparently this means small businesses that will be exported to New Zealand.

The National network was replaced with a Notional network, if you truly depend upon connectivity then there's little future for you in Australia.

Along with the ever increasing nanny state, Victoria's continual persecution of the common motorist, and the lack of any telecommunications future for Australia, I am seriously considering emigration within five years.

nbn™ says nobody needs gigabit internet, trumpets XG-Fast at 8Gbps anyway

sbd

Exactly, the numbers stated are meaningless, nothing new from the nbn there.

It might be... 85% of connections capable of up to 100mbs are connected at the top tier.

It could be the overall number of 100mbps connections has increased, with the percentage of the total falling due to recent FTTN additions which are incapable of that speed.

That's before addressing questions of the backhaul provisioned being capable of making the tiers actually usable.

Just more useless statistics, there's not enough information given to mean anything at all.

Australia's PM says data retention laws think of the children

sbd

"If the justification for such a law is the benefit to law enforcement then we can do far better than simply some metadata! Let's put cameras inside every room of every home! Let's issue mandatory ID cards that have to be scanned any time you get on a train or bus (close . . .) or enter a building or purchase anything. We could all wear GPS-trackable bracelets if they like.

That will help catch criminals so that's got to be good right?"

You realise that is exactly what they are getting. You have a mobile phone, the location is trackable as long as it is connected to cell towers. Victoria's Myki's, to fully use them you are asked to register an account, so you can view usage, and remaining balance... and scan them as you get on and off transport. Just not mandatory registration.. yet...

On the article... think of the children? !!! Why not do something concrete about decades of abuse by the church, it's become a cultural meme, and all that has resulted from recent investigations is some wrist slaps... and while they're at it... look at the orphanage system, it doesn't take many conversations with those who were "cared for" to find out how rampant abuse has been over the past decades.

But never mind all that, there's disgusting photos on that internet thingy, and we don't have to take blame for church or state institution if we focus on the internet!

7 days sounds great

That's how long they should store data before uploading it to the government.

Why should ISP's (customers) foot the bill for storing it, just dump it daily or weekly to the Gov and let them pay for it!!! Of course it will NEVER be deleted, but since they can grab copies of it with no justification they'll be able to cherry pick the data they think is useful and just store that for 100 years after your death. This way they have to foot the bill for all of it.
