Arm China brands itself a 'strategic asset', calls for Beijing's help in boardroom dispute with Brit HQ

Peter Danckwerts

The British Government should never have allowed the sale of ARM to SoftBank. If ever there was a strategic asset, this was it.

Arm wrestle round two: Chinese outpost says it's fired the replacement CEO foisted on it by HQ

Peter Danckwerts

The mistake was selling ARM to SoftBank. It was SoftBank which sold off ARM China. I don't believe in protecting every British company from falling into foreign hands but ARM is of such strategic importance that I think the sale should have been blocked.

Hey, Brits. Your Google data is leaving the EU before you are: Hoard to be shipped from Ireland to US next month

Peter Danckwerts

Factually incorrect

The headline is factually incorrect. The UK is no longer in the EU, so we will not leave it after Google has transferred our data. We are in a transition period during which EU law, including GDPR still apply. If Google breaches GDPR before the end of 2020, it can expect to be very heavily fined by the UK Data Registrar. At the end of 2020, new UK GDPR rules come into effect which are virtually identical to EU GDPR rules, although the two may diverge over time. As I understand it, Google is certified as compliant under the EU–US Privacy Shield framework, in which case it could move all its EU data to the US if it wished.

Internet overseer continues wall-punching legal campaign

Well, ICANN is right about one thing. Like most EU laws, GDPR is vague. I don't think any two EU countries have interpreted it in the same way.

I predict a riot: Amazon UK chief foresees 'civil unrest' for no-deal Brexit

Peter Danckwerts

Re: eh?

This is the big Remain lie – we should ignore the referendum because those who voted for Brexit are stupid/ignorant/bigots. What they really mean is that they don't like it. It's just an excuse to ignore the will of the people. I agree that the referendum should have been more specific, but whose fault is that? David Cameron's – and he was a Remainer.

Peter Danckwerts

Re: eh?

The only people who might riot are the younger Remainers who object to Brexit – oh, but they're the ones who couldn't even get up the energy to vote. Peace will reign.

Black Horse Down: Lloyds Banking Group goes TITSUP*

Peter Danckwerts

Re: On the day the BoE base rate goes up ?

When I last visited a manager at Lloyds Bank, which wasn't that long ago, his computer was still on Windows XP. They probably use one to run their websites – or perhaps they are using a Sinclair QL. I can't imagine them buying anything as classy as a Nimbus.

Take off, ya hosers! Silicon Valley court says Google can safely ignore Canadian search ban

Peter Danckwerts

If one puts the jurisdiction question on one side for a moment, it would be good to see Google putting as much effort into fighting piracy as it has into fighting this case.

Break crypto to monitor jihadis in real time? Don't be ridiculous, say experts

Peter Danckwerts

The assertion that 'Two of the suspects were known to the authorities and ought have been the targets of control orders and travel restrictions.' is absurd. The number of people known to authorities is just too large for this to be feasible.

Intel's Atom C2000 chips are bricking products – and it's not just Cisco hit

Pity it's too late to buy ARM shares. It was bought by SoftBank last year.

Users fear yet another hack as TalkTalk services go down

Peter Danckwerts

Down again

TalkTalk seem to be having further problems all over the country. I can't access email from multiple hosts (I don't use TalkTalk's own email). Nor can I access many websites. All this when they've just announced price increases and are attempting to get customers to lock in to new 18 month contracts!

I'm just shocked that the Information Commissioner can make such ridiculous comments. How on earth did he get the job?
