I did something similar for my mother when she needed some addresses transferred from her trash 80 over to a 'modern' Windows 95 computer. it was so long ago that I don't remember the exact procedure. I can tell you that there was a host Drive involved and that I had to get an old copy of Lotus Notes which was able to convert ASCII characters to Binary data so that she could have her address on the new machine.

Roku 3: Probably the best streaming player on the market ... for now, at least

Shovel

Roku lost this customer years ago.

Roku wouldn't even support their earlier products past a certain point. I purchased an original Roku because I still had analog devices. After I relocated, and shelved the box for a year, I tried to re-connect the Roku. It was futile. CS had me resetting the box, and re-registering it several times, Re-registering would always failed because the server address stored in the box's memory did not match Roku's actual server address., Their was no way to redirect the original Roku. CS couldn't figure out why. None of them would do anything except elevate me another level, and start the whole procedure again. Not even a Senior technician would do anything except read what was on his cue card. I was never ever to get my original Roku to be registered. They had no clue how to redirect the unit, The bottom line was, they either were unable, or unwilling to give me 'support' on how to keep the original Roku on their system. If I wanted to keep using their services I would be forced to buy again. That's bullshit.

l disagree with the title of this article, after my own testing.

My folks live way out in the countryside, and have to live with an Internet connection based on radio-relay. It has an advertised download speed of 1.5Mb/sec. Speed tests with various online resources indicated that most of the time the maximum speed was 1.1Mb/sec.

I purchased a Roku 3 in the hopes that it would work, but it buffers constantly. Watching anything other than an old TV show(analog video) is a frustrating experience. Out of curiosity I purchased a first generation Apple TV and applied the XBMC install.

This ATV hack works much better than a Roku 3. It streams old analog media perfectly, and '720' media only buffers occasionally. I won't discuss the issues of programming because the title is about 'streaming'. A hacked ATV can deliver slower-speed content with much less buffering than a Roku 3. I've had both, and the ATV is just better.

If El Reg wants to talk about programming and compatibility, then that is an apples-to-oranges discussion. I have (RF)wireless control over my early ATV, and USB in/out. While I did not have Netflix, did manage Amazon Prime video streaming.

Plus, the XBMC community offers support that's second to none. Anyone tried to contact Roku when there's a problem? All they do is follow their cue cards, and have no brain at all. I've been elevated up the troubleshooting chain twice with a senior technician who only had me repeat what 2 others had puked out. Nothing new.

ATMOS, more is not always better.

I witnessed a fully-outfitted Atmos system at Bjorn's in San Antonio, playing the movie Gravity. Between the ultra-wide screen and the 4 extra ceiling speakers, my senses were over-whelmed to the point of having to close my eyes and cover my ears. It wasn't that the sound was too loud. It was my brain unaccustomed to the visual/aural emersion simultaneously. it reminded me of the first time I went to an IMAX movie, except now it fits into your living room.

To run a proper ATMOS system, I must add 4 extra amplifiers on top of the already 7 surround, plus 2 subs. And to have the projection system 4K capable, plus adding the motorized Stewart Filmworks-adaptive-Uniform-Gain system, I'd have to upgrade the electrical service in my house. And let's not forget wireless control. Only thing left is some Magic Finger couches and Magic Mouth groin adapters.

what you need, is a sh*tload of solar panels

There is a back-of-the-napkin formula for determining the amount of solar panels you need to generate enough power to recharge 10KWh of battery. It's in 2 parts. Careful now, this is very dirty math, but surprisingly accurate against correct formulas. Here it comes

Formula 1

Watts x 4 divided by 2

Assume that you are using a 300W solar panel, so 300 is our 'Watts'.

4 = amount of average direct-sun hours shining on a fixed-tilt solar panel, per day.

Divide that figure in half, to compensate for end-to-end loss to infrastructure (cables, ambient temp, battery temp, panel efficiency-changes with temperature).

Formula 1: 300W x 4Hrs / 2 = 600 Watts 1 panel would supply to a battery bank in the 4 hours the sun is tracking directly over your panel.

Here comes Formula 2:

A 10,000 WHr, or 10KWh battery bank would need to be charged in the 4 hours of direct sunlight hitting the panels. 10KWh / 4 hours would be 2500Watts per Hour. Because we lose half of our electricity in infrastructure, we would need to have twice as many panels to sustain 2500 W an hour. Let's get 5000W of panels:

Formula 2:

5,000 W / 300W = 16.6 solar panels to give enough Wattage to the system to charge Mr. Musk's battery in 4 hours of direct sunlight.

There is a glaring flaw in my simple math, and that is, Mr. Musk is talking in terms of KiloWatt Hours(USEAGE), but batteries are rated in Amp Hours(STORAGE).

THEY ARE DIFFERENT QUANTITIES, so there is no direct conversion. You can look up many tables in Google to try and figure out how they convert. We can only guess.

Again, this is all dirty math, but it gives one some insight into what it would take to support Mr. Musk's fancy battery in the event of a complete power outage…, Sixteen 300W solar panels.

Do you smell that? It's Elon Musk!

Shovel

simplify what you are getting.

I'm not even going to bother with back of a napkin. Let me use 1rst-grade math

10 KWh battery

2 KW constant output or 8.6 Amps constant output

10 divided by 2 = 5

This product can supply 1 house circuit with 5 hours continuous use

And if it is like other Lithium Ion batteries, you won't get any warning..., it will just stop.

so when the power goes out, you get one 20A circuit(under load) for 5 hours, for $3500.

OH, and the Inverter is not included in that price. How much is a TSW 2000W inverter these days?

A quality TSW inverter that you can put in line with your service panel will most like cost another $2,000. You don't want to trust your home to a Chinese POS. They MEANWELLL, I mean,

Re: Speed and more speed.

"Plus watching a 8 year old laptop boot up in 15 seconds is still pretty cool "

I second that. I purchased a laptop donated to Good Will Industries (which only has licenses for Vista or XP ). The fresh install of Vista was ghosted onto a 128Gb SSD, and has been the fastest and most stable OS of all any Windows machine I've owned.

At the time of purchase that SSD was about $1 (US) a Gb, so now I am thinking of re-Ghosting the original hard drive onto a larger SSD.

Please, no criticism of Vista . I am not a power user; my occasional web surf, Netflix, and Office-use work just fine.
