Delphi RAD tool (remember that?) gets support for Linux desktop apps – again

I'm quite happy with Lazarus / Free Pascal on Windows and Linux, even the Raspberry Pi.

Wow, fancy that. Web ad giant Google to block ad-blockers in Chrome. For safety, apparently

RMycroft

Fine, it's not like I have a shortage of Raspberry Pis to run Pi-Hole on. It's not that I'm opposed to ads (TANSTAAFL), but it's my computer and I pay for that wire to the Internet. I control the vertical, not you Google or Microsoft or anyone else.

Who cares what Trump said.

Ready to go, unless you'd put things in the "unused" top 8 bits of the address registers.

Microsoft paid me $650 to scrub Windows 10 from my grandpa's PC, says man

RMycroft

Two mornings in a last week where Windows tried to install the "anniversary update", failed, and rolled it back without a single explanation. Two and half hours down the drain each time. When I checked in settings to see why, it only said that it failed. I clicked on "more info" but got a page that was a sales pitch for the update that failed to load. In the feedback, I said that their page had negative value. (I think some "UX expert" failed to game this one out.)

This machine is the last Windows hold-out in the house. I think I'll be "exploring my options".

Suing them? Hmm, I wish.

Re: Left padding

Good old DTSS. I can't be arsed to dig out my copy of BASIC 6th edition to see if there was a built-in function that would do the job. In any event someone did it in COBOL long before to pad out money amounts with asterisks on cheques.

AVG defends plans to flog user data as privacy row continues

RMycroft

They say they won't sell personal information such as names, emails, addresses, or payment card details. Does that mean that they have that information? If so, users are depending that AVG never gets hacked, or has a disgruntled employee leave with the data, etc.

I stopped using it years ago when it became more invasive and harder to uninstall than many viruses.

I'm confused

Since torrents are distributed networks, and sites that list torrents don't actually host anything, what is a "torrent site"?

It's not Star Trek babble. Star Trek babble uses three words of nonsense that sound good. e.g. quantum phase inverter. This has FOUR words of nonsense, which is a whole new paradigm shift modulation!

Sorry, chaps! We didn't mean to steamroller legit No-IP users – Microsoft

Re: What lies!

What Microsoft claimed was that 93% of the malware that uses DNS uses No-IP. They forgot to mention that 100% of the malware uses Windows.

RMycroft

Do you have anything other than the word of David "Pinocchio" Finn that No-IP hasn't been pro-active?

As I recall, No-IP was always quick to pull the plug on spammers who abused their service. I don't see why they wouldn't be consistent against malware too.

Also, Microsoft didn't "take them to court". That would involve exchanging legal letters and finally having lawyers for No-IP present in the court room to argue their side. Microsoft did the exact opposite of taking them to court: Microsoft apparently engaged in a legal sneak-attack.

RMycroft

This may have temporarily disrupted some botnets, but it won't last. There are many different ways to connect and control a botnet, no-ip was just an easy one. Odds are, the malware writers are already rolling out their own Patch Tuesday.

Re: Oh boy, wait until China discovers this

First I would expect them to send an army of socks to thrash the Wikipedia articles. I doubt the even mighty ARBCOM would follow the Scientology example and block anyone editing from a Chinese IP address.

Facebook, what's that?

I don't use Facebook, so I block facebook.com at the router. That way no tracking information goes back to them when I surf pages that have hooks back to Facebook. And the Facebook app on my phone that I don't use and can't remove can't connect back to them every night. (Use the Android development tools logging to verify that.)
