MacBook killer? New Lenovo offering sexed up with XPoint booster

Re: Indeed

Though the gap is closing fast, I was planning on buying a Lenovo P50 as my next laptop (to replace a 2011 17" MBP) when the base model was £1350 (until yesterday). This morning it was £1,769.99... Or I can just fly to New York and get the same machine for $1099 (inc Tax).

Re: Weird

I've had theresa_may for my wide open SSID for the last couple of years. Do I need to set up a captive portal for the six regular visitors to my network just to emphasize that this should not be seen as endorsement?

Of course he is, and not fancying a permanent holiday in Russia or a Federal institution he's doing the smart thing and saying nought.

Lester Haines: RIP

My thoughts go out to his family, especially those that we got to accompany on his mad escapades. Lester was without doubt my favourite Reg contributor. From gastric monstrosity's, and dodgy plumbing, to a private space program; bringing wit and a genuinely charming attitude to every article he touched.

Re: Fit for purpose

Fair point :) My dad bought an Amstrad PC1512 on his own credit card because it ran DisplayWrite4: The powers that be couldn't understand why a civil servant would want a computer when there was a perfectly good typing pool. Its amazing how much has changed in just 30 years.

Re: Fit for purpose

Gotta love the reg Mint fettish :) (Im not opposed but why mention the Mint flavour of Mate (which is Gnome2 continued...) or Cinnamon, Zorin is however getting pretty close to a drop-in replacement. Maybe this cluterfuck of badwill that MS seems to be trying to generate will prompt more people to look into ReactOS (https://www.reactos.org), I've played with the last release a bit and it's fast approaching usable. Unfortunately the issue in this case is not the slope of the learning curve, but the very existence of a learning curve at all...

Re: Fit for purpose

No, jumping to Linux is not on because of old dogs and new tricks, my folks (in their 60's) have already begun that transition - one on fedora, and the other ChromeOS (so pretty close). But to be blunt - when your at the stage that basic self care requires professional help, dealing with a new UI to stay in contact with your family is really not on the list of things to do. (shame as if I'd pushed em over 10 years ago then they could prob. still be on Gnome2 with a rolling release and be perfectly happy)

Fit for purpose

This has now struck an elderly (91 year old) member of my family, and taken a perfectly fine, updated and patched windows 7 install, and replaced it with windows 10. There are driver issues now with the graphics chip-set (no official support) and he is unable to comprehend the UI changes, so cannot check his email unassisted any-more. He paid for a product (Win 7) that was compatible with his computer and it has now been replaced with one that he did not knowingly sign up for or offer compatibility with his existing hardware. Surely this is a pretty clear case for legal proceedings - I'm not going to do it as it'll take years and not improve his quality of life in anyway. So I'm going to put a "Pirated" copy of Win 7 back on his computer to restore the what he paid for.

Netragard is interesting

one of their founders also runs a pretty dodgy looking pay per click consultancy (JeremiahBaker.com) and according to linkedin: "Jeremiah is also the co-founder - President of Marketing & Sales of a software sales firm that sells PDF software to businesses world wide with clients in Belgium, United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States." Don't know what the companies called (odd that it's not promoted alongside his other ventures in the clear) but thats the last guy i would ever want a pdf reader or writer off...

Re: Android Apps

As the first poster said this ain't 'super-duper' but the bare minimum required, I'd advise someone talking this seriously to go MUCH further. A minium 1st stage would be to isolate the wan from your terminal physically, by using a setup similar to whonix in it's two node configuration or qubesos with an isolated nic.

Re: Crossfire

Hey chump,

Cause if you have a static ip then if you need dns you can use a normal service, like everyone else - the need for dynamic dns services will not be there anymore. (Or at least vastly reduced).

Maybe think before getting excited.

Amazon have performed bulk testing of their customers EC2 instances, which is great: but I'd be really interested to know how this fits in with the current legal framework? They have provided me with a list of all of my instances that are vulnerable, so must have performed a health check... (resubmitted and cut down as my last post was rejected for some reason?)
