Trump wants to work with Russia on infosec. Security experts: lol no

Ol' Grumpy

Re: Don't get sheep herded by the fake news media

"Russia is what it is, and far away from Swiss democracy, but it is better than it was before."

No it isn't. Putin is far more dangerous than Gorbachev and Yeltsin ever were - at least they seemed to play by the rules. That Putin changed the Russian constitution to allow him to have more than two terms of presidential office should tell you everything you need to know.

'Fibre broadband' should mean glass wires poking into your router, reckons Brit survey

Ol' Grumpy

I'm surprised at this. I was told that there was a minimum "estimated" speed that had to be achievable by Openreach before they would install FTTC type broadband to a property. In the case of my parents, it was something like 24Mbps and the conversation came about following a call into Sky Broadband's helpdesk when the service was being particularly flaky.

East Midlands network-sniffer wails: Openreach, fix my outage-ridden line

Ol' Grumpy

I had an issue with BT a couple of years ago where my speed (Infinity 2) dropped from 80Mbps to around 55Mbps over the course of a few months. I logged this with BT support a couple of times where I was helpfully told to reboot the Homehub I wasn't using.

Long story short, I moved to PlusNet and queried the speed I was getting which they agreed didn't match the profile my line should have been capable of. Cue three visits from Openreach engineers.

The first one said everything checked out and left - no improvement.

The second one said everything checked out, replaced the master socket and left - no improvement.

The third guy had been to a wedding the previous day and I think was nursing a hangover. This one did a full end to end line test, disappeared off to the cabinet, came back, did more testing, went off to the cabinet again, sat in his van and ate sandwiches, went to the cabinet again and then advised the port on the line card in the green box was knackered. He moved me to a different card and I was back to near enough 76Mbps.

It took about three hours and I still the guy is a legend.

All the time he was commenting about how Openreach don't give their engineers the time to diagnose faults properly before they have to be on to the next job so the experiences listed here and in the article really don't surprise me unfortunately.

I think what scares me is the language used by Trump and his advisors about (formerly?) trusted allies and friends. That phrase quoted by Peter Navarro telling the world there is a special place in Hell for Justin Trudeau sounded like it could have come straight from the Westboro Baptist Church press office.

High-end router flinger DrayTek admits to zero day in bunch of Vigor kit

Ol' Grumpy

Re: DrayTek routers are considered high end in the UK

To be fair, I remember the 2800 series being pretty poor on ADSL2 type connections which were starting to become the norm when they were released. The 2820 and beyond were (are?) much better and far more stable on ADSL2 in my experience at least. We replaced far fewer of them in the field anyway.

I've always been impressed with Draytek kit since the launch of the original USB 2200 which I and many others used to get around BT's original "1 ADSL connection, 1 PC" DSL policy :)

Many brave people, military and civilian, died on both sides in the first two years of the war - especially those who were subjected to the blitz. I think it goes without saying that without American support, the outcome of WWII could have been different but to suggest nothing happened in those first years is unfair and frankly - disrespectful to their memory.

As mentioned by a couple of folks here already, I think among the IT savvy, security updates are key and the way they are handled by most vendors at the moment is pretty bad.

Example - the Moto G5 plus. Their EU release channel is on January 18 security updates, the UK release channel only just got November 17. Unless they are using the EU stream as a giant soak test, I don't see why they aren't released to all channels at the same time.

If Android One compliant phones sort that out - I'm all for boring! :)

I just can't see this kind of thing taking off while prices for mobile data are as expensive and restrictive as they are. In terms of "stock android" - the Moto G5 Plus is also worth considering although I believe there is a new one in the works. Decent camera, dual sim and the battery easily lasts into a second day for me and there isn't much in the way of bloatware on there.

The downside is that software updates however don't appear to be a thing. I've been stuck on 7.0 since I got it. It also has a fixed battery.

O2 admits to throttling network bandwidth for EU data roamers

Ol' Grumpy

"It's even funnier when you reallise that GiffGaff run on O2's infrastructure...."

I don't know what it is like now as I have moved away but I was rarely seeing over 0.5Mbps with a 4G signal at home, let alone abroad with Giff Gaff. My experience was similar to that described in the article, where it would start high and immediately dip to between 1.0 and 0.5Mbps as the throttling kicked in.

I moved to BT Mobile in the end. I hate myself for doing it as I liked the GiffGaff concept and ethos but I can't complain about the BT/EE 4G throughput.
