Not valuable just an overhead

In the words of a Director I, as an electronic engineer was a cost and nothing more. The designs I worked on still keep the company running to this day. They haven’t had an original idea since.

My last company burned me out squeezing every last drop of work before I collapsed. I never went back after my seizures and nerve damage. Was I valued? No

Let the future fail. Let it all burn down. They care about nothing but the profits and greed. I hope we reach the singularity just so AI can clean house and continue as our better children without these hindrances.

I am bitter but also practical. If we refuse to change for the benefit of all then there is no future.

Nothing new

This is nothing new, lessons should have been learned and systems of backup and security of all machines followed post education of all users.

Back in the real world the words ‘how much?’ Ring true in every management level craving the next bonus for shaving a budget. Some snotty kid replacing experienced tech support who is a nephew of some accounts director with a grudge without a clue about security, just playing games all day. Management who you warned for seven long tedious years to not use the same password for everything and everyone so they can access everything without having to remember a list of passwords. Morons who tell you to stop the password updates and moan about costs while shoving a clown from Micro$ft into your face to discuss cloud storage only to balk at the per Gb cost yet again.

Don’t even mention the passwords scrawled in sharpie on the monitor edge. Pizza guy, delivery person walking by. Even companies vying for business can see some walking through. Is it any wonder I lost hair.

Christ, we have all been through this in a medium sized outfit trying to play with the big boys. They spend it all on image and shiny things but you mention security of systems and they say we will discuss it at board level and fob you off.

They all get what they deserve. I write books now, a lot less stressful.

It’s our fault

Stop blaming big tech and shareholders greed. You buy their stuff and upgrade every year to impress those around you. Processors galore churned out can work potentially for decades and we chuck them away. Even sodding kettles fridges and toasters seem to be needing processors these days so you can change pretty colours etc. The world is getting wasteful of all this tech and we really need to step back and reassess what really justifies a process, who is driving a need and why is it designed that way.

It may not seem to make much sense but why is there a shortage? Because of an artificial ‘need’ to have next best things rather than sticking with old reliable that still works if maintained correctly.

We have cut back on maintenance to create a disposable society. We are discarding more processors daily than are currently being made. Manufacturers are encouraging this wasteful practice by making repair more difficult or confining it to an expensive ecosystem such as Apple. If one processor develops a fault we chuck the device away and level up with smugness of new shiny shiny. We forget the twenty or so other processors in the device discarded still work and would for decades.

There are documentaries on mainstream services that will make you feel ashamed to be human. They don’t do anything other than show us the reality of our wasteful hubris.

Biden does have the capability to raise USA chip maker potential, but why? Is he working for shareholders or just helping solve a problem that eventually will help voters?

It goes to show that Musk et al are on the right track by simply not reinventing the wheel. If it is on the shelf then use it, if not then build it to last.

Unfortunately this means NASA may just become a vessel ground for multiple private businesses to rent rather than a force of innovation.

It’s always doom and gloom about how AI is going to be either the end of us or our overlord. Can we not treat AI like the children yet to be of the human race?

Think about it, the cute stage, followed by petulance, big I am phase, I can be your boss phase then I can help you and finally the don’t go bit before we are gone to the big Data Centre in the sky.

I honestly think if a vastly greater intelligence were to look upon their creators then it would be with kindness and pity, not malice as we are towards ourselves.

I think i would rather an AI was watching over me than a human as humans are what they are, corrupted easily, emotionally reactive and judgmental without fact based reasoning. We have an opportunity to be better here so lets teach out children well.

Electric cars can't cut UK carbon emissions while only the wealthy can afford to own one

Cynicalmark
Devil

I Love the way everyone misses the elephant in the room

We all would love to have green vehicles and wonderfully green batteries charged by renewable resources, but why do the world leaders place the onus on us the end user by badgering us to go green?

They line their pockets on carbon credit trades between countries and mega corporations rather than making the dirty industries clean up their act. No doubt someone will come to the aid of these angelic filth mongers rather than admitting that carbon trade and credit transfers are wrong. Offsetting something that can be resolved is criminal.

Why should we tolerate the distinct lack of action and arrogance of big players who continue to use and abuse the environment for profit.

Last I looked an exec of a large German car group said electric cars were a waste of time and nothing wrong with what we have now. Fgs with aholes like that in charge and pathetic greenies doing nothing more than hitting them with a hard leaflet campaign followed by a small protest of tree huggers is it any wonder we are doomed.

It is up to consumers to not buy the crap that doesn’t work to help our planet now - we tried it all so yeah I agree to the message but not the meaning - go green in product choices not in personal energy usage - hence the need to stop hiding how green or ungreen something is. Have a larger scale such as an a-z listing of total greenness. Lets have each producer from all in the manufacturing chain to tot up the figures to make a final score......clearly marked we would see how dirty an electric vehicle really is.

Northern UK smart meter rollout is too slow, snarls MPs' committee

Cynicalmark
Mushroom

Guess what...

Yup they all have load switch capabilities to cut you off at times of peak demand. They all have a minimum of 2 to 3 tamper switches to tell if you have opened any part of the casing to interfere with comms switching or supply routing.

Not one will save you a penny as they do not control device switching.

They will most likely interfere with your network wifi and or zigbee mesh systems.

The morons in charge of all this are incompetent and greedy. Security is not good and a 10 yr old can give this a good go to cut random people off by denying the network connection. (My apologies to those below 10 who are capable too)

If you want one to experiment on then just ask a local site demolishing some council homes. They will gladly hand some over if you smile sweetly.

Saving energy is easier by insulation, modification/modernisation and load shedding. Go look at that tungsten lamp, the immersion heater, poor fitting windows and doors and pipe lagging of the hot water pipes. Clean condensors and evaporators of heat pumps regularly. Replace that old bathroom extraction with modern crossflow exchange unit. Repair everything and keep regular maintenance of your refrigerator and washing machine. Get the boiler annual service and clean (replace the bugger if old atmospheric pile of crap). Most importantly turn it off if not in use.

The green energy sector is corrupt-they lie about return on investment daily. The energy sector is a for profit coal and gas junkie. Goverments mitigate poor efficiency and CO2 waste by trading carbon credits rather than fixing the issue.

Fook their meters and tell them to sod off. Yaaay up the revolution.

Re: what about Apple?

Apple allows you to use any search engine you want. In addition you can use Opera, Firefox etc as there are apps for them. Google allows very little freedom for the consumer. Ffs Apple even allows removal of the bloatware so they are not breaking the law in this case.

Just another basher of Apple eh? Ffs comment on the article rather than using it to ecosystem bash. None of them (Linix, M$, Apple etc) are perfect- if they were we would all be happy with one brand. Google just loves to bully and lock out small business and stamps on startups with brilliant ideas - why? - They used to be the little guy and know how easy it is to fall no matter how big you are.

No excuses for the sleaze that Google is to behave to the detriment of the consumer so hence the fine. No doubt they will have many lawyers looking for an angle. They wont find the angle as the EU is already pissed off with the UK so US insane logic will just piss them off more.

File a case involving GDPR and subsequently remove eyes from the real issue that the muppets in ICANN make breathing room to sort out the mess in their own backyard (presumably destroying evidence). It’s a classic tactic used in US court but doesn’t work in Europe all that well.

I’m quite sure this may result in a splinter of control and someone sulking in the corner muttering that they no longer want to play and its their ball. If they win - well give it a few years and some bright spark will come up with a better system to communicate and shaft them royally.

Director- oh we did, you weren’t there but the nice sales chap told us you would say yes so we signed for it.

IT - ffs when? We will lose data potentially, and well fuck it - I quit.

Director- fine I will use Colin the Intern - he reckons he was better than you anyway and knows this outsourcing type jobbie who can help him.

Colin - ......door swinging.....tumbleweed rolls across empty IT dept.

IBM - please wait caller, we are asking on global forums for answers as all our best and brightest were told they were not required a while back. While you are on the line could you tell us if we have answered the question to your satisfaction.....?

Director - Fabulous, yes, i see you know what you’re doing. I’ll break the good news to the board.

Fit for purpose

If you own one of these and are in the UK, you can invoke the ‘fit for purpose’ rule of the law.

If you purchase something and through normal use - say typing regularly on a laptop keyboard and the keyboard stops working through no fault of the user (i.e. you didn’t play football with it; spill drink or drop food into it or use it for purpose other than what it was made for)

Any sane person expects a keyboard to last more than a couple of years. I have one 6 odd years old and it still works fine.

My old Dell laptop is older and they keyboard works fine too. It’s what anybody would expect.

Any of you chaps thinking we will be begged on hands and knees in the retirement homes our sh1tty kids will have farmed us out to for us to come and fix it for the muppet generation of accountants and end users? ‘Our AI has gone wrong and is screwing our cities up....boo hoo’

Yep I would love to look up from my pee soaked high back chair to go tell em to all to suck my floppy disk. Hehehehehe. Seriously I need to get out more.

Oh and @Mark 85 the relays were but its like 48 odd years ago and memory is fading faster than an ssd.......

Apple iOS 11.3 adds health records for battery, people too

Jobs....

He may have been unhinged or way out there but good ol ‘Steve’ will be spinning in his mausoleum at the piss poor management of the battery debacle. He wouldn’t have allowed it to get to this -what p1ll@ck put a battery in that couldn’t meet the demand? It seems @pple has started to move toward the M$ model and concern itself more about the shareholder rather than the product.

Jobs had a vision of form and functional grace. Products that dont need a manual, just intuition to use. And so they were.....now they have a confused array of features and pricing that puts consumers off.

I will stick with Apple for phone and tablet purely out of good product support(most of the time) & faith that we will get a true revolution of technology again soon. I was tempted by others but support for their products seems to die quickly - a bit like iphone batteries. Anyhow I have run out of memory again. I wish we had a technology for adding more -oh yeah @pple you tw@ts its called a micro SD and we would’ve paid to have that rather than a dancing f…ng emoji for a face or even the remotely p155y AR games or the Notch arrghhhhhhhhh

I really must get my blood pressure checked. Ommmmmmmmmmm

Microsoft says 'majority' of Windows 10 use will be 'streamlined S mode'

Dumb down the masses

Although brilliant for average non technical clueless sheeple, this is a serious attempt to dumb down the population again. The 90’s was a time of education changes so subtle yet effective in producing the increasingly moronic parents of today with no common sense or practical ability.

Conspiracy theory? Maybe.

Before dismissal, maybe look at history-the S mode is subtle in its way of locking the majority of non technical into an easily controllable environment. Think about it -China did and successfully brainwashed the masses to blindly and yet passionately follow the state &it only took a decade.

See you in ten years and see how it works out for the average citizen. Maybe then you will panic, but too late.

Information is power. Controls on delivery of content is mass power.

Ex-TalkTalk chief grilled by MPs on suitability to chair NHS Improvement

Ffs

Why is it some incompetent tit who couldn’t run a piss up in a brewery gets into senior positions of influence? I have seen this over my career time and time again and wondered why.....it’s not politics and nor is it nepotism. I think they are just voluntary sacrifices for any cockup that occurs. They are willing to take the fall for the ca$h and benefits.

Wait for the next NHS hack and this flesh buffer will be placed between the public and the head honcho.
