NSA: 'Back doors are a bad idea, give us a FRONT door key'

Facepalm

Github

Github already hosts some forks of well known encryption libraries for users in the Middle East and I've read reports that the Syrian opposition uses modified open source programs to communicate as they cannot trust anything developed in the west. So I fail to see how this most ridiculous of ideas is going to help. Indeed how are these people even employed coming up with such stupid ideas.

Our world wide web is becoming more segregated by the day.

Thousands of UK drivers' details leaked through hole in parking ticket website

Well you have to ask why this data was being held in the first place. If the fines had already been paid then "Personal data processed for any purpose or purposes shall not be kept for longer than is necessary for that purpose or those purposes". But like most things in life nobody will be held accountable and despite some promises to tighten up security very little will happen because security costs and these companies are only interested in making money not protecting your data.

Apple preps to DUMP crappy, sluggish iPhoto FOR GOOD

depicus

Sucks so bad

The new app is awful so far.

1. A 1000 raw image library in Aperture is 1.8gb yet in Photo it's now 5.9gb - haven't tried any of the big ones yet.

2. Faces detection is rubbish, after 60 minutes of detecting the seven suggests were so bizarre and trying to reject them did nothing (yes I know it's a beta)

3. Shut down and then restarted and Face detection started again.

4. No easy way to organise and it seem like a game of hide and seek to get to maps or other views.

Will be sticking with Aperture until they pry it out of my cold dead hands.

'Tech' City hasn't got proper broadband and it's like BT doesn't CARE

Irony

Not sure how or why but I'm having fibre installed today and I live in the middle of nowhere, so much so that previously ADSL was limited to 4mb max.

How BT consider a few houses and a lot of trees more economically viable than a major metropolis seems odd but I'm not complaining.

HMRC fails to plan for £10.4bn contract exit... because it's 'too risky'

Not surprised, having worked on a government contract 10 years ago the levels of incompetence were truly staggering, 2 months of Terminal Services not load balancing properly and on my first day managed to Google the issue and tick a box before 10am.

Devil

Stupidity at it's best

I'm not sure what is more incredulous - the fact that people in power believe that back door encryption keys are a good idea, in that I blame the political parties and some very stupid civil servants and contractors who think it could ever work especially when most of these companies are outside of the UK.

Or the fact that "terrorists" are just building their own, ironically open source, encryption software (hence the reason India recently blocked Github) and are, I would guess, probably unlikely to want to hand over the encryption key for the "intelligent" services in the UK.

I wouldn't trust ANYTHING the supposed spooks told me especially when they have a vested interest in their own budgets.

Re: Faecebook results exclude people who dont give a shit about Faecebook

I never understand peoples need to denigrate others use of social media in such a manner, is there really any need to suggest somebody is a twat because you don't like Twitter ? Give me a reason why you dislike social media - a good valid cogent argument otherwise I just think you are a twat.

Evil US web giants shield terrorists? Evil spies in net freedom crush plot?

Mushroom

The naked truth

The thing with terrorist acts is if you really want to commit one, even if you were under surveillance, it's quite easy to accomplish if you so desire. We used to have one of the largest terrorist surveillance systems in the world active in Northern Ireland and yet were incapable of stopping many terrorist groups from killing and bombing. In Afghanistan the Green Zone was said to be one of the most secure places on earth yet had many terrorist attacks.

Maybe the security services telling us they need more money to combat so many attacks is just bullshit and in reality just job creation for the security sector.

Yet more NSA officials whisper of an internal revolt over US spying. And yet it still goes on

depicus

If only they could put it to good use...

I suspect very little intelligence is ever gathered from mass data surveillance - remember Osama delivered his messages using word of mouth from trusted subordinates and I suspect the top of most criminal/terrorist/political trees do the same or similar.

This is about catching the plebs, those who are starting out on their path to political err sorry terrorist endeavours, the fact that they are stupid enough to brag about it online would suggest they are stupid enough to get caught by good police work. Sadly we cannot afford good policing anymore as we spend our budget on I.T.

Crooks are using proxy servers to build more convincing phishing sites – new claim

Hard to mitigate

I was looking at this a few weeks ago after having a clients page pulled and used as their own to sell advertising. We put in some javascript to check if we were in a frame or not the client domain which solved the problem but I suspect it won't be long before they proxy the page again but then strip the javascript out.

Lucky you. Twitter offers you its 'Digits' (for mobe app sign-ins)

What developer would ever trust Twitter again ?

I find it hard to believe app developers would trust Twitter again after it allowed 3rd party develops to build their business then cut them off bit by bit.

As a user I have no interest in sms login, I dislike it because there will be times I want to try an app so might provide a dummy email address which cannot be done now. And what about those who use company phones or those who don't have a number.

I'm sure it will spawn a small industry in anonymous sms receiving web sites.

depicus

Re: Really?

Sadly my scepticism at piss poor reporting would like to give this gentleman the benefit of the doubt and suggest he may have been remarking on the general tone of Red Bulls advertising which often suggests it will improve your athleticism which most people would find laughable but has an underlying message that this is some kind of sports drink and by consuming it you will improve your performance.

On the other hand who would be stupid enough to believe anything you read or hear on the news let alone in an advert.

How do banks still get away with this s**t...

Why don't banks simply not clear cheques until they are 100% sure they are real ?

Perhaps to protect their margins and save on the cost of employing somebody to actually check the cheques instead of just relying on customers to report fraud then refund them.

Re: Sir

Not quite sure you understand the definition of theft so here it is.

"A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it; and “thief” and “steal” shall be construed accordingly."

Note the key words property, permanently depriving. Both categorically deny you can "steal" a film.

Imagine your Aunty Silvia had a bit of a crush on you and you met her at a family party.

The first time she's fine and just chats to you all day. The second time you meet her she again chats all day and cold stares anybody else who comes over. The third time she goes for a kiss and tries to slip her tongue down your throat. You complain to your wife but she just laughs... that is G+

Piss poor reporting

Indeed the reporting of this issue was so poor

1. You would need to do a man in the middle attack first so this discounts all but public locations in reality.

2. It was only an issue for numeric addresses not fqdn so how was this going to affect joe public as the last time I logged into my banking it never used an ip address.

3. It was only just reported Friday and was fixed Tuesday - not sure how that is such a long time.

Microsoft: NSA snooping? Code backdoors? Our hands are clean!

Looks quite interesting and while there seems to be a lot of hatred for Facebook here (I can think of more evil companies - looking at you Google) I can see this being quite popular if it works as advertised. Thankfully unlike G+ i'm not forced to use this, indeed it's not coming to the UK on the 3rd so we will have to actively hunt it down.
