Feelin' safe and snug on Linux while the Windows world burns? Stop that

a_yank_lurker

Re: Article smacks of...

@m0rt - The current issue aside, the basic problem with security is not everyone patches their boxes and too many have bad surfing and email habits. If you fall into one or more of those groups, the OS might buy you more or less time before you get nailed by a nasty. For those who do patch, have good surfing habits, and are careful with emails, you are less likely to be harmed no matter the OS.

Bonkers call to boycott Raspberry Pi Foundation over 'gay agenda'

Sings of Insanity?

I just went to raspberrypi.org and can not figure out what the loon is talking about. Given one of the major targets of the project is school children the color scheme strikes me as appropriate for that target. Nothing on the site strikes me as taking a side on gay rights. Maybe the loon should be kept for observation for serious delusions.

Cloud sales shift as enormo Microsoft reorg continues – sources

a_yank_lurker

Re: Following in IBM's footsteps ... again

Not quite, but reorganizing the sales force can either mean someone has a clue or what I have experienced more often is a shuffling of the deck chairs on the Titanic. If someone has a clue, the results should show in a couple of quarters as the backlog and bookings start to build. Otherwise, we have deck chair shuffling. Nadella seems to vaguely grasp that Slurp might have to cannibalize their own products something the PHBs running I've Been Moved never seemed to grasp.

Re: War on drugs?

Better parallel, booze and cigarettes, both are legal in the US with the only requirement the purchaser be old enough to buy. The only 'illegal' cigarettes are those 'imported' from a low cigarette tax state to a high tax state and sold on the street. But even in high tax states most will buy from a local retailer. With booze there are dry countries (no sales allowed) but no dry states. Also, moonshining is more a regional (Appalachia) issue with most operations being relatively small scale. Again, most buy their booze from a local retailer, ignoring the existence of moonshine. In both cases, the possession is not a crime and it is the tax avoidance when selling is the actual crime. In the case of moonshine, if one gets the proper paperwork done, one can produce and sell it legally all you want.

a_yank_lurker

Re: I know better, but...

@ma1010 - The fallacy of the 'war on drugs' is that criminalizing drug possession/use will stop drug abuse and addiction. I has not and will not. So if drug abuse is going to occur anyway it seems the wise thing to do is legalize all drug manufacture, sale, possession, and use. But too many have a vested interest in the status quo for this to happen. Legalization converts the problem from a criminal and medical problem to just a medical problem.

The Prohibition Era in the US was a failure with criminals distributing booze instead of legal businesses with the attendant violence. Legalizing booze means there criminals can not easily make money from it and there is no violence associated with the manufacture, sale, and possession of booze. Alcoholism is now only a medical problem.

Problem

While terrorists do use various social media and online communication tools and terrorists kills and maims innocent people how do you define 'terrorist content'. a_yank_lurker

Re: Um....

The vulnerabilities I worry more about are macros, browser hijacking, and zero-days. An exploit that requires the miscreant to have physical access is not very worrisome. If some can physically get to your computer, you are toast and have more serious security problems. Plus any such physical access probably means your OS is not that critical.

Canadian sniper makes kill shot at distance of 3.5 KILOMETRES

a_yank_lurker

Re: Risk to the shooter

A couple of points: the muzzle flash may not be noticeable at that distance, the sniper is likely firing very slowly - may be a minute between shots, and standard assault rifle only has an effective range of about 300 meters. Depending on how noisy the area was another rifle might not have been noticed. Also, snipers are trained to find tactical positions that make return fire difficult. The part most do not realize is sniper rifles are optimizing for 1000m + ranges while the standard issue infantry assault rifle is effective out to about 300m. Actually one of the best cures for a sniper is an artillery barrage, as a howitzer has a longer range and much bigger bang.

Tesla death smash probe: Neither driver nor autopilot saw the truck

a_yank_lurker

NTSB authority

The NTSB does not issue fines or judgements. Their role is to find the root cause of the accident and make recommendations to avoid the problem in the future. Any fines or administrative action against Tesla (in this case) would be done a by different agency. Also, recommendations are implemented by other agencies. Also, the NTSB will work with any interested parties to accident to determine the cause including the vehicle manufacturers and owners.

Based on the various articles I have seen, the driver was at fault for ignoring system warnings he take more control. So other than improving the sensor 'viewing' area and some interlocks, I doubt much will happen to Tesla since it appears the driver ignored repeatedly safety warnings.

Cannibals

I believe Steve Jobs commented that a company is either going to be cannibalized by competitors or they are need to cannibalize themselves. His point was the market is never static and new niches and players will appear. Some of these niches will grown big enough to hurt you unless you keep adapting. Adapting may mean letting the old products that made your name die off while new ones that better fit the market are introduced.

Chipzilla and many others have failed to understand this basic truism. The market is ever changing and just because you the current apex predator does not mean you will not be someone else's dinner in the future.

If the twin is there, then the theory is on much better footing. Valid theories make predictions that can be verified and explain known observations. This theory offers a possible explanation for the number of binary systems which is a known observation.

Teen girl who texted boyfriend to kill himself guilty of manslaughter

a_yank_lurker

@frank ly - without knowing the specifics there was likely a time lag as evidence was gathered and assessed (say 6 months). Then she is charged and makes a preliminary hearing (say a 2 months). Now there is time for some shystering (several months). Then finally a trial date is set. It is fairly easy for 18 months to two years to pass before the trial begins for a straightforward case. In this case throw some wrangling over whether she should charged as an adult or as a child, she was 17 at the time.

a_yank_lurker

Re: Evil Bitch

"I wonder if 20 years will change her for the better?" - I doubt the underlying issue will go away. What might happen is she realizes there definite boundaries for one's actions and if does not want to end up in the pokey again obey them.

a_yank_lurker

Re: Unwise decision?

"Logically how can it be involuntary manslaughter? The evidence was that her actions and the outcome were entirely volumtary, preplanned and what she intended." - You would need to read the state law on murder/manslaughter and the sentences for each type. Shysters are not known to use English but something that looks like English aka Shyster.

a_yank_lurker

Real Problem

The various PHBs have not figured out (probably never will) that most of an organization's IT functions should remain in house, done by direct, permanent, employees. This is the only scenario that allows for the most control of the information, data, and code. This is especially critical for privacy issues. The third party company may or may not have all the proper controls required by various national data privacy laws. Medical data laws are similar but not identical to financial data laws. I am reasonably familiar with one (HIPPA) and only have a vague awareness of financial but I work in the medical industry.

Employees of the third party company first loyalty is the company paying them not the client, as it should be.

German police nick alleged admin of dark web gun sales site

a_yank_lurker

Actually nut jobs can not legally get or own a gun. There is a an automatic feral background check when a gun is purchased from a dealer. Flunk the background check and you do not get the gun. Some jurisdictions have a mandatory waiting period.

The problem over here is gun violence tends to make the news when there is a crime victim but what is less often reported is number of criminal who became unwitting targets when they found the resident was armed.

The problem with the analysis is the assumption that our current theories are the final word on interstellar travel. It is more likely our current theories are woefully incomplete but we have no idea how woeful right now. With that in mind, we really do not know if there are any more advanced civilizations in the universe or not. Nor can we prove either we are alone or there many.

Edge Cases

Right now I would be more concerned about thoses cases that have been properly handled such as icy roads, snow, etc. So far all the major testing has been done under about as an ideal situation as possible: California and Arizona. I would like them to try Buffalo during a lake-effect snow storm or Atlanta after a major ice storm for starters. Buffalo is prone to heavy snows before Lake Erie freezes over. Atlanta is a very hilly city. If the automation can handle those situations I will pay more attention. Until then we are years away from being autonomous cars no matter what the hype machine says.
