128GB DDR4 DIMMs have landed so double your RAM cram plan

Tromos

A far cry...

...from the days I used to save my pennies for another pair of 2114s to add a whole kilobyte of RAM to my first personal computer.

Note: those pennies amounted to about £4 each for the 2114 (1k x 4 bits), equating to around 8 million quid per gigabyte!

ICO fines PPI claims firm £80,000 over 1.3m spam SMS deluge

Tromos

How about the number brokers?

It is surely obvious that not everybody on the list of numbers has agreed to be contacted, and of those that have, most have been conned by small print clauses when signing up for something totally unrelated to PPI, accident claims, boiler insurance or whatever.

A short spell in jail plus a ruinous fine just might make the number peddlers seek another way to make a living.

Roamers rejoice! Google Maps gets offline regional navigation

Tromos

Re: Cough. (@cambsukguy)

I wonder what the Facebook figure would be if it was possible to remove it in all cases. Seriously, why do some manufacturers embed apps in Android that can't be removed? It's not as if they can force you to set up an account and use them.

TalkTalk may tell investors to tighten belts after cyber incident

Tromos

If I was an investor...

Linus Torvalds fires off angry 'compiler-masturbation' rant

Tromos

@Def

C is only ever a terrible, insecure language in the hands of a terrible, insecure programmer.

Think Fortran, assembly language programming is boring and useless? Tell that to the NASA Voyager team

Tromos

Re: Where do I sign?

I would imagine the space probe doesn't have a Fortran runtime on board, that particular requirement being for the command and control and received data processing back here. The assembler would be for the probe itself and I would think anyone suitable for the job would already have worked with several different assembly languages and would take adding another in their stride.

Shocker: Adobe patches critical Shockwave remote hijack hole

Tromos

Easier solution

"Why not just add 'Patch Adobe' to your to-do list. Every day for the forseeable future."

Alternatively, why not just add 'Remove Adobe' to your to-do list. Once.

Raspberry Pi grows the pie with new deal allowing custom recipes

Tromos

I'd only want 2, maybe 3, so can't make use of this service, but I suspect that what I'd like would sell many times the minimum quantity. Simply this - get all the connections on just one side. Doesn't matter if it is a little larger, the effective 'footprint' of the device will be smaller if USB, HDMI, power, etc. didn't all come out of different sides.

The Steve Jobs of supercomputers: We remember Seymour Cray

Tromos

Happy days

I used Cray designed kit throughout most of my early career, loads of CDC 6000 and 7000 series and then Cyber17x. Managed to use (and sit on!) not one but two Cray-1s. Always loved the clean and elegant machine instruction sets. That's probably why I much preferred the Signetics and Motorola microprocessors to the Zilog and Intel ones when the personal computer revolution started.
