Huawei Mate 20 Pro: If you can stomach the nagware and price, it may be Droid of the Year

If the manufacturer doesn't push out the updates it doesn't matter what "projects" it has installed.

Google: All right, screw it, from this Christmas, Chrome will block ALL adverts on dodgy sites

Re: Still worse than an ad blocker (by design)

I agree completely, I really wish websites would give me the choice of a micro-payment or accept ads. It would be a micro-payment every time and if I didn't think the site was worth that I wouldn't go there.

Re: No headphone jack

Not an issue for me, I very rarely listen to music on my phone and need to charge it at the same time; in fact I can't think when I have ever needed to do that in the 3.5 years I've had my current phone. If it was something I actually needed I'd by some Bluetooth ear buds.

I am in the market for a new phone to replace my Nexus 6P and I've narrowed it down to a Pixel 3XL or Oneplus 6T; I'm leaning towards the OnePlus as a £200 saving is quite a chunk of money, but I do worry that updates, or lack thereof, could be an issue.

Sorry friends, I'm afraid I just can't quite afford the Bitcoin to stop that vid from leaking everywhere

Patrician

I've had a couple of those over the last few weeks, to an email account that is never used; threatening to send the video to all the contacts on that account. That would be a stupendous feat as there are no contacts associated with that account, not to mention they captured the video on a PC that has no webcam. So, yeah, go for it.

So the one that offers the better service gets your custom or are you saying in the model I propose everyone will just be crap?

Unfortunately in the model you propose, and as it happened, broadband prices got lower and lower, each ISP undercutting the others, to the point that the only way it could be profitable was to massively over subscribe their service; relying on the ones that just use their connection for email and web browsing to subsidise the ones that used their connection for gaming, streaming services etc. Eventually nobody could get anywhere near the connection speed they were paying for outside of very off-peak hours.

Patrician

"fight for your custom by reducing prices or offering a better service."

This doesn't always work in the consumers favour; this happened in the broadband market starting around ten years ago and resulted in a race for the bottom. ISP's kept offering unrealistic pricing for their service that meant that anytime outside the wee small hours of the morning, the contention ratio of your connection was so high that you didn't stand a snowballs chance in hell of getting anything like the speed you were paying for.

I'd far rather pay a realistic amount for my broadband so long as that means that the ISP isn't over selling accounts in my area and I actually get the speed and quality of service I pay for,

"No no no. The vast vast majority of normal people do not care about this. In fact they like things that work consistently."

Actually, my experience proves the opposite, I have friends that are not in anyway "IT Comfortable" that chose high end Android devices simply because they liked to be able individualise the Home Screens. Now, possibly these friends could be the exception rather than the rule I suppose.

Lenovo Thinkpad X280: Choosing a light luggable isn't so easy

Re: Care

"Lenovo's support has gone to the bottom of the pile."

This exactly; Lenovo's RMA/Technical support has to be the worst of the major manufacturers to the point that they completely refuse to RMA a machine that was delivered with chassis damage. Lenovo state that no machines leave their plant with physical damage so it must have been transit damage; transit sourced and supplied by Lenovo mind you.

Considering the awful build quality of Lenovo products you would think their RMA system would run like a well oiled machine.

Huawei elbows aside Apple to claim number-two phone maker spot

Re: Lifetime ...

One of the benefits of buying a "high-end smartphone" is that it *can" last longer than three years before it starts to slow down and the battery fails.

I have a Nexus 6P that is now three and a half years old and is still working with no issues, including the battery still allowing a full day of pretty heavy use.

This would not have been true had I bought whatever the budget smart phone of the time was, as they quite often begin somewhat "slow" and get worse from there on wards.

I must admit the price of the Nexus 6P is more "budget" these days :)

Patrician

Re: Lifetime ...

"If you buy a high end handset that's shipped with Oreo then updates aren't dependant on binary blobs from silicon vendors any more."

But you are still dependent on you manufacturer or service provider, if bought under contract, for those updates to be pushed out to your phone. It is that stage where things go south.

Surprise! VAT, customs likely to get a bit trickier in a Brexit no-deal world

Re: Can anyone

"- We can set up trade deals that benefit us, and not be told what tariffs/taxes to charge to benefit someone else."

So negotiating a trade deal as one small island will get us better deals than negotiating as a member of a 27 country trading block? Not sure how you'r working that one out.

"- We can set up trade deals that benefit us, and not be told what tariffs/taxes to charge to benefit someone else."

Not sure how our economic model is any different, nor why we would want it to be different, from other EU countries?

"- We don't have to send billions a year to be spent by someone else on what they think is good for us."

<sigh> this old debunked claim - all going the the NHS is it instead?

"- We can deport undesirables (hate speech preachers, for example) without the ECJ telling us that we have to keep them because deportation would spoil their family life."

I agree with the above but not sure the EU ever stopped us doing this anyway.

That's interesting, I would have thought with their use, the security patches would be of paramount importance?

Patrician

Re: Conspiracy theory.

"And the argument 'get the latest Android first' does not appear to be convincing many consumers to take the bait either. AND it's available from other brands through 'One'."

The above, for me, is the deciding factor on what phone I buy; well timely security patches at least. But as the major manufacturers insist on installing their bloated, and pretty much useless, "skins" onto Android this means they are not able deliver said security patches, this means that a Pixel is the only phone that will be fully up to date.

My sons Samsung S8 as an example is a month behind my Nexus 6P on security patches, and the only reason can be the time it takes them to make sure that their awful, and completely useless, "skin" is compatible.

Re: An attitude based on unfounded snobbery

I always took it that, that comment was her version of Occam's Razor.

Granny Weatherwax is a very "non-new age" and pragmatic; for instance her "clients" would think she'd healed them by making a magic potion but really it was the way she'd twisted their back while pretending to stumble and holding onto them for "support".

She most certainly would not encourage the belief in ancient aliens and other "woo-woo" stuff.

Patrician

No, sorry, I refer you to Occam's razor.

Those ancient jars do *not* produce current; modern replicas of them maybe do, although a modern replica may not be all that much of a replica when it comes the choice of materials used in it's manufacture.

Fork it! Google fined €4.34bn over Android, has 90 days to behave

Patrician

Re: what about Apple?

"The issue that sticks in the craw is that Google apparently don't allow an OEM to produce two Android devices, one of which is fully Googled-up while the other is not. If they're different devices they should be allowed to use different licensing schemes."

Nothing is stopping them from doing just that; they can take the free Android kernel and build their own operating system, incorporating whatever rubbish home developed apps they want to. If they produced one that is better than Fully Googled Android then, just as Chrome beat out IE, they/it would beat out Google,.

The chances are more than 50/50 though that it wouldn't be better and would be so full of Samsung, for instance, rubbish that you couldn't uninstall, and wouldn't be able to change default search, email etc. and would "slurp" your information and data to Samsung rather than Google.

The end of this route is that the only decent option for a mobile phone would be one that is Googles own.

Patrician

Re: " Can't wait to see the MS fine then."

You don't have to use chrome or Google Search on your Android phone either; your completely free to use Firefox and Yahoo if you wanted to.

Re: At least it's not BING

There is a big difference, try searching both for "exchange 2016 cumulative update"

Google top link - download page for the CU

Bing top link - a Microsoft Docs page of Blog posts.

Okay, just one, not really very big, difference but there are many more where Google finds the page you want whereas Bing does not, well not on the first page anyway.

Patrician

Re: You can't fork Android

It's not a case of "rewarding Google for their practices" as the Pixel 3 will be a Google product so I would expect it to have Google apps as defaults.

Samsung set their apps to be default so why not expect Google to do the same on their own hardware?

Big contenders in the broadband chart this week, but who will be #1? Well, not Britain

Patrician

"It's ridiculous that so many people still don't understand this, especially on a technical site like this one."

No, whats "ridiculous" is that the internet industry has been allowed to use "Up To" all these years as a part of their advertising.

Patrician

I would think that the survey would only measure speeds of the premises that actually had a broadband connection; any that didn't wouldn't be included in the figures as their speed of "0" would make no difference to the totals. In the same way, if you wanted to find the average speed on UK roads you wouldn't include vehicles that were parked at the time.

You're indestructible, always believe in 'cause you are Go! Microsoft reinvents netbook with US$399 ‘Surface Go’

Patrician

Most of the negative posts aren't aimed at the device but more at the manufacturer of said device; the device it's self is no better, or worse, than a PixelC or Chromebook, and at least isn't an Apple device which I wouldn't touch with somebody elses barge-pole.

Bottom line, it's a 10 inch tablet and the price isn't far off the Android and iOS equivalent; it runs Windows which does mean that it could be attractive for field engineers, for example, where Windows is a requirement due to software.

Re: Happens all the time

Minecraft, and for that matter most Bethesda game, are different; the "unofficial addons" are called mods and both games have sites dedicated to posting and downloading those mods that are moderated with the files virus scanned by the hosting company.

The files themselves are not executable, in the main, and can only be "opened" within the games themselves.
